    Part of the reason Manny is so good on offense is that he doesn't expend a lot of energy on defense. LF at Fenway is 310. LF at Wrigley is 353. Plus, Manny has the green monster. So on a ball over his head, he doesn't have a lot of running to do, b/c he knows he's got the wall and it wall bounce back to him. The same thing happened w/ Berkman a few years ago. He had to play CF, increasing the amount of work he did on defense, and it hurt his offense. The same thing will probably happen to Manny. He'll probably perform like our Ramirez.

    Good. I want Walker back next year. He has 363 PA at this point. He probably won't vest his contract, so the Cubs will have an option. I think the Cubs should pick it up. He's not going to vest it b/c of that injury. DAMN YOU, CARLOS LEE!

    You think his 4.47 ERA is worth $9 million? It's Hendry's fualt for giving him the contract, and allowing him to have a vesting option, which BTW is only 3.2 innings away now.

    Hell will freeze over if New Orleans is gone. Jazz ain't the same w/o it. Same would happen if Chicago were blown apart. Jazz would never be the same if Chicago and/or New Orleans are gone. I hope New Orleans is rebuilt.

    Wood has had a history of arm/shoulder problems. Rolen was the victim of a collision. Completly different stories here.

    But Manny wouldn't have a no-trade clause if he's traded before that occurs. So, if the Cubs acquire him, he doesn't come with a no trade clause. On the other hand, his contract makes him nearly untradeable. I'd take Manny if the cost was only in dollars of the contract and very little in terms of players. We could get Manny and make very few other changes and I think this team could win next season. Imagine this line-up: Lofton CF (until Pie is ready. Lofton could be signed for 1.5 mil likely) Walker 2B Lee 1B M. Ramirez LF A. Ramirez 3b Murton RF Barrett C Cedeno SS I think that line-up could score. It's 2-5 is devastating and the bottom three should be solid performers. Tek will get his no-trade clause soon, and on Oct. 3, Manny gets his 10-5 rights. Manny will be able to block any deal this winter.

    What's the record for errors by a SS?? If Nomar can actually play 130 games next year, he could get it. Jose Valentin is the worst fielding SS of anyone. I think he made 50 errors in 2000 w/ the Sox. People say he has great range and can get to a lot of balls that others can't. To that I say BS, b/c he still throws the ball. He is a horrible fielder. If he can get to so many balls, great, but he should've kept them in his pocket, instead of trying to chuck a throw to 1st to get an out.

    At least Sosa tries on defense, it's just that Sosa sucks. Manny's contract is worse than Sosa's, plus he's going to get a no-trade clause when the season is over, or earlier, depending on when Varitek gets his. Manny's contract his this: receives a NO-TRADE clause if any other Sox player should receive one Red Sox team policy has this: Red Sox new team policy: A Red Sox player cannot be traded without his consent if he reaches eight years of uninterrupted major league service, all with the Sox. Varitek had 7.020 at the start of the season, so he'll get one soon, which will also give one to Manny.     Niefi is a good backup, I agree. But he's going to fleece the organization for 3-4M based on what he did when Nomar was out.

    Maddux has always been a team player. If Maddux thinks his salary can be better used, then he should defer some money. When the Cubs and Cards were in the race to get Mad Dog in Feb. 04, some players on the Cards offered to defer some salary to free up room to get Maddux.

    Even though I don't want the Cubs to get Manny Ramirez, I've still decided to see what you guys think we'll need to give up to bring him to the North Side. I think we pick up Burnitz' option, send him, Patterson, some minor leaguers, and agree to pay about 3/4 of his contract. Feel free to propose your own deal as well. Once again, though, I don't want him. He's got a Sosa like deal, and a Sosa like attitude.

    I was cleaning my room this morning, and I found a Cubs schedule from 1978. My parents actually found it when we were getting the kitchen redone at our Skokie house. I got put away w/ all the stuff, and I found it this morning when I was going through my boxes. Bleacher seats cost only $1 in 1978.

    Sliding into 1B has no purpose. It's dangerous, and it slows you down. The reason you slide when a tag has to be applied is b/c the time lost to the slide is offset and thensome by the extra time needed to apply the tag.
