  1. What/who do you want then? Just curious...
  2. What do you know about Gonzalez to make this think he would be such a great hire?
  3. It was for a defensive superstar who drives in runs with his glove. Point taken...we can go round and round on this but won't. IF we can get a Loretta type at 2B I think this Izturis thing just might work out pretty well. There aren't many ground balls at Wrigley that are routine....see Pagan's double late in the game. There are funny hops out there...he's got the talent and the arm to stick with it and still make an out on a fast runner.
  4. Doesn't sound that terrible of a day? I guess you had to see it... for izturis, who is supposed to be the second coming defensively, i'd consider a day with two misplays to be a bad day. but back to hill's greatness...don't want to divert the thread too much. :D A hard hit ground ball that takes a tough hop on him is hardly a misplay. He played the ball of the chest, just as he is supposed to and made a very strong throw to first without even really setting his feet to get a good runner in Bay. I know a great majority of fans here don't like Izturis and the trade but it doesn't mean you should now try to find reasons to criticize him unfairly. That was a play, that if committed by Ronny Cedeno would have been called sloppy, lazy and ill prepared. It was a routine ground ball to short. No it wasn't...it was hard hit and took a funny hop up to his chest right at the end. He played it correctly, got in front and played it off his chest and fired a bullet to first. That was NOT a routine ground ball.
  5. don't pull anything patting yourself on the back, dusty. :pukel: There is nothing wrong with this comment at all. He is giving Murton a compliment by saying he has struggled at times but found himself for a strong second half run while complimenting Pagan, too. Oh my...the humanity. I realize most people here don't like Baker and want him gone, but don't try to find reasons to criticize unfairly.

  7. We want you to stop writing writing loaded sentences like the one quoted above. Tell me what to say so I can jump on board with this "Cubs suck, Hendry sucks, everyone sucks" bandwagon. What I said above may have been loaded, but in response to 1908 it was absolutely right. How was it absolutely right? You've been misrepresenting my statements all night and then discrediting them. You said offensively he is atrocious. I feel and still do, that he can improve on his #'s yet because it doesn't fit into your projections or a calculation, he is terrible. I disagree. Better yet, compare those #'s to other 8 hole hitters in the NL and I'd argue he'd be just fine. Factor in what his defense brings and I like him at short and in the 8 hole. But it's a whole damn team of 8 hitters. What are you basing your hopes that his #s will improve other than optimism? Talent, health, maturity, more offensive support surronding him. Players do not develop plate discipline 6 years into their career. That's where you're wrong...all BUT Cesar Izturis. What about talent, health and talent around him? Guys improve as they get older and he's still only 26. He was thrown right into the deep end at a very young age. At times he did well and at times he didn't, but who's to say it won't "click" for him next year? Nobody knows for sure....let's see.

  9. Simply ask the admins. 1908 might be willing to accomodate you. I will....I think he likes me.
  10. Irritable or short-tempered; irascible. Define irascible.....just kidding. Yes, that is me but some attitudes here just bring it out in me. We all want the same thing...to see the Cubs do well. In the meanwhile, let's enjoy it for what it is, have some fun and see what happens. I prefer to watch the games and the players while having some beers and some fun.
  11. That hardly justifies snarky responses. Define snarky. Snarky (adj): see: bring stone back That's strange....the definition is my message board name? I don't do the message board thing often, but can I change my name to Snarky? How does one go about doing that?

  14. Yet the naysayers are acting like Hendry had a list of people to choose from for Maddux. It's not like he said no to all these great players...he took what he could and that's that. Frankly, I'm just glad we got rid of Maddux....he's not good and he's using a valuable spot in the rotation we should be using to audition Hill, Marmol, etc. I'll take Izturis over a couple of nice prospects in AA.

  16. Better yet, let's all use hyperbole and straw men to make our points. That would make for really fun discussions. This is going nowhere constructive. Believe what you will. okay....he's played one game in a Cubs uniform, is only 26 with room to improve yet he's atrocious. Okay...you're right. Well you're leaving out a lot of other information we have about him, such as his past performance at the plate. You're certainly welcome to your opinion that he will improve. I hope he does, but with the available information, I (and others) don't feel he's going to be that beneficial to the team. Defense doesn't count? Being arguably the best at his position in the game should count for something.

Believe what you will. okay....he's played one game in a Cubs uniform, is only 26 with room to improve yet he's atrocious. Okay...you're right. Yet another straw man. Awesome. G'night. What do you want me to say? He's young with room to improve yet you deem him atrocious offensively and that's all there is to it, right?

  19. Five year PECOTA projections from BP: Year AVG OBP SLG VORP WARP 2006 .262 .305 .337 5.2 3.3 2007 .265 .308 .245 6.3 3.3 2008 .260 .309 .335 4.5 2.8 2009 .265 .312 .341 6.1 2.9 2010 .257 .304 .334 2.5 2.0 Doesn't look good. How would he get these numbers? That .245 slugging for example-the lowest slugging he has ever had in his career was .303-and that was when he was 22 and breaking into the league. Somebody brought up the point of why people would think he would improve-the simple answer is that he has improved every year in his career until he got hurt. His OBP went from .253 to .282 to .330 in 3 years, and was at .387 the next year-and then he played hurt, and it dropped down to the .302 number. We can't be sure about this years numbers yet-he hasn't had enough at-bats. For example, his OBP jumped 6 points tonight-and if he goes 0 for 4 tomorrow, it could go down those 6 points just as fast. So now that he's coming back healthy from the surgery, we simply expect him to keep improving like he did every year right up to the injury. Is it a sure thing that he will do that? Of course not-but it is perfectly reasonable that a man who improved every single year from 22 years old till 25 will continue to improve now that he is healthy again. I think arguing a more optimistic point of view or taking a let's give this guy a chance vantage point is pointless.
  20. Some hitters make drastic leaps in production in their mid-to-late twenties, but it isn't very common. So it becomes an argument of possibility versus probability. Here's hoping your unlikely optimism holds true. Yes, it's atrocious. My God then...let's get him out of baseball if that's the case.

Have him run the numbers and tell me who'll win the World Series the next 5 years. I'm planning a Vegas trip late in the year and could really use some cash. Did Bill predict Bobby Abreu's power numbers falling off so dramatically? That information would have been nice before my fantasy draft. Well, if the projections are so off base, make yours and we'll see which come closer. PECOTA has its flaws, but comprehensively, it's been extremely reliable. I can't in good faith argue with Tom Landry.... I'm making no bold predictions, but what I am saying IF we acquire a Grud or Loretta type player at 2B and in the 2 hole what is wrong with those numbers from your 8 hole hitter and a great shortstop? Who's to say he can't have an Orlando Cabrera type of offensive resurgence?
  22. first time I actually laughed out loud here....well done I say.

  24. I could make an educated guess based on his career production to date. What would you use to make your guess? So what you're saying is once you turn 26 years old, that's your peak offensively? No player has ever improved? Damn... Nice straw man. I didn't say that at all. Why do you think Izturis will improve? How much do you think he will improve? I think he'll improve because he's only 26, has more talent that Neifi and had a VERY productive first half offensively a couple years ago pre-injury. Let's say hypothetically he maintains where he is for his career...is that so bad for a 8 hole hitter? The key is getting rid of Cedeno in the offseason for a Loretta or Grud type 2B next year.
