  1. Apparently you missed this thread, among others. If you have a point to make, make it. Don't play calling-out games when you weren't around to make your case earlier. And BTW, Barrett wasn't pinch-hitting for Blanco last night. I do have a point to make and made it. Some on this board bitch way too much for absolutely no reason and are nowhere to be seen when things are going well.
  2. ...I see.... Is this similar to certain members waiting untill we have a few good games in a row to tell the "haters" how right they were all along? No, this has to do with the Cubs losing three straight and hearing "see I told you so. I've been saying it all along. Dusty sucks, Hendry sucks, etc." Did Dusty suck when we were a couple outs from the world series in his first year? Then, when Dusty makes what is deemed to be a good move and it looks like some of Hendry's retooling in the bullpen seems to be paying off I hear nothing. What was even more pathetic was when I read on this board that Dusty is in his contract year so he's managing better the first five games of the year because he's looking for the big contract. Are you kidding me?
  3. I'm sorry, man. I visited this board to get information and only started to actually post and reply. I must admit, I'm new to message board protocol. Thanks.
  4. Baker is a bad manager?? Based on what?? His multiple manager of the year awards and playoff appearances.
  5. This is exactly what I'm saying....thank you. This is a prime example. The Cubs lose, and you come back for the first response in the thread, not addressing many of the comments refuting your original post, but instead quoting the one person that's repeated the same argument you did in the face of many posts to the contrary. How's that for consistency? I was out of town and away from my computer. My sincerest apologies. How dare I start a thread criticizing people on this board and NOT be able to reply immediately.
  6. Are you kidding? Find a post where someone has said it is 100% unacceptable to swing at the first pitch in any situation. You won't be able to find one. Of course we're going to complain if a batter makes an out on the first pitch. Making an out on the first pitch is essentially the most worthless at-bat possible. You should only swing at the first pitch if it's exactly what you're looking for and you're able to do something good with it. If you hit a homerun or get a hit, great, you didn't waste your one pitch at bat. But if you make an out (which Cubs players tend to do when they swing at the first pitch), you've had the worst at bat possible. That's not true at all. You look at percentages, know tendencies of your opponent and be aggressive depending on the situation. What if Lee is up to bat with a runner on 2nd and no outs and flies out to deep center or hits a line drive right at someone....is that a worthless out? Absolutely not.
  7. This is exactly what I'm saying....thank you. This is a prime example.
  8. I didn't really like the hesitation he had when asked if a change of scenery would help him or Wood. There was a definite hesitation in his voice but he came back with the company line. I did like the fact he mentioned in a week or so they'll re-evaluate things and he shouldn't need many rehab assignments. By mid-May I think it's safe to say our rotation would be Z, Maddux, Wood, Prior and Hill/Williams/Guzman. Couple that with our bullpen and I like what I see. How long until we see Pie and who's roster spot does he take? I hear he's really tearing up AAA.
  9. Rolen. The question wasn't about upside or long-term/trade value, it was who do you want right now. Even as a Cubs fan, it would be Rolen.
  10. If we're in the same exact situation as last night (late innings, bases loaded, no outs) and Barrett pinch hits for Blanco and grounds into a double play Dusty is an idiot again, right? Just making sure.... I don't visit this site that much but I have not seen a complaint about Hendry, Dusty or Neifi in the last page or two and want to make sure the haters here maintain their integrity. I know we're 4-1 and all seems to be going well, but I'd rather see the constant complainers come out and remain consistent at least. At times I think people on this site would almost rather see Neifi strike out in a tight spot or Baker push the "wrong button" so they can tell the rest of us how bad they suck and how they were right all along.
  11. Why do people, especially Reinsdorf and MacPhail bother to read this guy and put any stock in what he has to say? He clearly went to the Skip Bayless, Woody Paige, Jason Whitlock and Dan LeBatard school of journalism. Know you're a mediocre writer so take the contrarian view on nearly every issue and criticize WHENVER possible to get a rise out of as many as possible. That contrarian view leads you to ESPN chats, radio shows and television spots. (For Whitlock the clincher is "play race card whenever possible). Honestly, would people even bother to read him at all if it wasn't to bash or criticize? Have you EVER read a piece by Mariotti and thought, "what an intelligent, well-written piece?" Lately, I just glimpse at the headline and chuckle. Simple Chicago journalism....what team has more fan support than any other??? Obviously it's the Cubs....how can we get a rise from as many of the Chicago sport fan base as possible? Bash and criticize the majority of the Chicago sport fan base to in an effort to get more readers....that simple.
  12. For Cards or Cubs fans....I know the the R, L, R breakup in the order is a luxury, but am I the only one who thinks having Edmonds in between Pujols and Rolen is just a dumb decision? Edmonds, although still a good player, is clearly on the decline. If Pujols and Rolen hit 3-4, I think that combination could nearly rival Ortiz/Manny numbers. I think it's foolish, but I for one and happy to see it. In today's game, you constantly see left-handers come in to get one big out and pull him for another guy out of the pen. Does Edmonds being in the 4 hole really do much other than breaking up the Cards best two hitters?
  13. See a guy fail? See Choi, Hill or Patterson....take a pick.
  14. Arroyo looked unbelievable last week in his only Spring start for the Reds vs. the Red Sox. We'll see, but I do not like Glendon's chances of getting out of the 5th in that park against that team.
  15. while I don't know what the Indian's bench situation is, I know many people around here would be going ballistic over this move. Just look at how he got long-term deals for Martinez, Peralta and Sizemore on the cheap and that's a guy who knows what he's doing. Crisp was a big loss, but if Marte is half as good as his pub...the Indians will be a good team for a LONG time.
  16. My God....gotta love this board. At least nobody here criticizes too much or jumps to conclusions. He (gasp) might actually miss a start or TWO!! The horror.... I have Jermaine Dye on my team. I think he's going to hit 1.000 all year long....that should really help the overall average.
  17. In a very real way a lot of our team's success is going to depend on how good the RF is. Wilson is acceptable if we land Tejada, or barely acceptable if we hold onto Walker. Wilson is not acceptable on his own. Unfortunatly, those here that thought Wilson and Pierre would be the big additions this offseason might be proven correct. The Cubs' success will be depend on the health of our starting pitching staff....
  18. Why not? We're not going to get ANYTHING in return for him. He can be a nice defensive substitute, pinch runner and a spot starter. I just hope this offseason gave him a chance to clear his head. In my opinion, that's his only problem. He swung at early pitches in the count because he was afraid of failure and striking out....all mental. There was a game last year (can't recall which one) and a poster on this board noticed it too, where he looked flat-out scared at the plate. He then went on to strike out in 4 pitches. I hope he took Dusty's advice and visited a sports psychologist. I honestly think that would do him wonders.
  19. I would be very happy with Lugo, Wilkerson and Huff. Lugo is not as dynamic as Furcal, but a more solid all around player. Wilkerson would be nice in centerfield and in the 2 hole while huff would be okay in right and batting 6 or 7. My only fear is the D Rays are going to be asking way too much for Lugo and Huff.
  20. Wow....a proposed lineup using sound judgment and logic!?? If the Cubs could pull that off, I'd be all for it. I think Jones would be cheaper than Giles and a much better value. Furcal is a no-brainer and would be great on the long grass at Wrigley. The range he could provide would be ridiculous, not to mention his leadoff ability. He needs to be priority #1 this offseason. I'm not nearly as big of fan as Walker as everyone else seems to be and getting Floyd would greatly upgrade the outfield and provide a left-handed power bat. I just hope Nomar would sign off on a move to 2B.
  21. How is it that this guy continues to get criticized after every game and every at bat? Can you honestly look at every other BACKUP middle infielder in baseball and say Neifi can't at least compare to them? Some of you react like he was brought here to be the every day shortstop and our clean-up hitter. He is what he is, a quality back up who can spot start at 2B or SS, play solid defense and provide some quality at bats. So he's to blame when Nomar went down or was that Dusty's fault? There are a lot of reasons for the Cubs' collapse in '05. Neifi Perez is VERY low on that laundry list.
  22. I'm no GM or anything, but do some posters here realize when you propose these highly unlikely, blockbuster deals (see Manny, Dunn, Kearns) you have to actually give player(s) to the other team in return? In all of these hopeful '06 lineups I see Dunn and Manny in some of them yet our young, position players worth any value at all are in them, as well. Are we trading real estate or valuable stock for these guys? Just curious... One more thing, since Patterson is so pathetic, useless and just "doesn't get it," how is it that he is the proposed cornerstone in all of these fictional trade proposals? He has so little value to the Cubs that some of you would like the Cubs to get rid of him immediately for nothing, yet all of these other teams are supposed to salivate over his upside?
  23. Patterson needs to start every game the rest of the year and keep him in the 7th or 8th spot to offer him some stability. The season is over....what do the Cubs or Patterson benefit if you bench him the rest of the year? Best case scenario, he finds a comfort zone and finishes the last month or so on a positive note coming into next year.
  24. I'm not saying the cubs set an arbitrary date of giving up on Patterson. My point is you keep starting him and keep working with him until you have a better option. If that means tomorrow via trade....great. If that means '08 when/if Pie can claim the job...great. I think we can all agree this season is over. Why not keep him in the 8th spot, give him a little stability every day and see what happens. I think he's having some quality at bats recently and I see a reason for optimism. What would benefit the Cubs or Patterson if you benched him the rest of the year for Hairston?
  25. My expectations are for him to be the every day center fielder, hit .270 and steal 25-30 bases. I don't think you give up on someone with that much speed, power and ability. Not yet. This is still the same player who was on his way to an all-star appearance before the ACL injury. If you offer a legitimate upgrade at center field, I'm all for it. I don't however think Pie is ready to be the every day center fielder next year. Intriguing prospect but it's too soon.
