  1. I honestly prefer this place to Cards Talk. Yeah, more people post there, but for the most part, they're morons. Instead of realists, I like to call them "real-less."
  2. Somebody made a feel-good topic on Cards Talk. I read: "Hey, if we can't land Burnett, why not try and get Millwood? He'd probably cost about $5-6 million per year."
  3. CubsFan1908: LOLOL nice job on Burnett!111111one!shift PieOnMyHands Auto-response: Sorry, I'm passed out on the floor in a puddle of my own vomit, bottle of Jack Daniels in hand. Please leave a message. :(
  4. I'm sorry if this has been posted. I looked on the first few pages and didn't see anything... Search feature has been disabled. The Tacoma News Tribune is also reporting that the Mariners have offered Kevin Millwood $44 million over four years and says the two sides could be close to a deal. The deal may include an option for a fifth year and added incentives. Just one year ago, Millwood signed a deal that guaranteed him $3 million. If the Mariners thought he was such a good bet to stay healthy, where were they then? Source: Tacoma News Tribune Rotoworld. Suddenly, with this market, Burnett was looking like a bargain...
  5. OK, here's the only optimistic view I can shed on the situation, as a Cards fan: I'm glad Jocketty didn't budge. He did everything but guarantee a fifth year. He basically said, "Hey, if you don't blow out your arm, your fifth year option will kick in." He didn't cave. We supposedly offered 4/$48...$60 after a 5th year option. However, what we didn't do all along was guarantee that fifth year... I'm glad they didn't panic! It sucks losing out on Burnett, but at least they pursued him with their heads on straight; they didn't let the hype get the best of 'em. Someone just claimed to have seen Burnett again at the airport. In fact, I saw him too. He drove to my house in a taxi, personally kicked me in the balls and said, "Deja Vu, [female dog]." On the bright side, while we lost out on Renteria... he was a bust! I want Burnett to be super successful but then get hurt, just so it wises us Cards fans up a lil.
  6. According to KSKD (St. Louis TV station), the Cardinals "Plan B" involves going after Jacque Jones and Brett Boone. I mean, seriously. Being a pretty split baseball fan (49% old school, 51% sabermatrician), I feel that the non-Burnett plan is just ludacrous. Think about it. Jacque Jones. Bret Boone. Deivi Cruz. 2005 OPS's: Jones: .757 vs .886 from Sanders Boone: .411/.684 (MIN/SEA) vs. .741 from Grudz Deivi Cruz: .698 vs. .704 from Nunez Uh... yeah... I would hardly call a lineup that features Pujols, Rolen and Edmonds "average," but signing the aforementioned trash could easily bring it down to that level. Granted, the money we use from missing out on Burnett might be used to really solidify the bullpen, but I don't know. Losing out on Burnett is like getting kicked in the balls. We were toyed with the whole time, and I knew we would get him! Damn Toronto. The minute Giles inked with San Diego, I suggested to my fellow Cards Talk members that they'd do anything to land Toronto. Looks like they have succeeded..
  7. The Cardinals are determined to make a deal with Burnett work. Please refer back to our 6:45 PM update. Those issues are being discussed this evening between Cardinals General Manager Walt Jocketty, Darek Braunecker and Mark Rodgers. Jocketty has clear instructions from Cardinals Chairman and General Partner Bill DeWitt. J.P. Ricciardi has told Burnett's representatives that their current offer is Toronto's best and final offer. Ricciardi is expected to spend the rest of the evening exploring trades and setting up meetings for Tuesday. That's from Inside the Dome; they're a Blue Jays fan site. Part of the Scout.com network. (Granted, some will question the reliability of their site..) Also: Reports surfacing earlier this afternoon that the Blue Jays have agreed to a deal with A.J. Burnett have been proved premature.
  8. You would think. However, Hector Luna is probably not going to be our starting second baseman. Only if we were to have signed Giles or Burnett... So, in reality, Luna (who can play third, 2nd, shortstop and the outfield) would've assumed Nunez's role). I don't understand this at all. Not one bit... unless they're going to declare Luna starter. Which they wouldn't do... they'd give him an opportunity to earn it, but... This offseason got really crappy, really quickly.
  9. A sub-300 career OBP. Can he play defense? This came as a complete shock to me. Why the hell would they get this guy?
  10. Although, that said, he didn't pitch an inning in the playoffs... and threw 23 innings the entire 2003 season.
  11. Cards are meeting right now and have an opportunity to throw one last offer at him. We guarantee 5 years, you can pretty much guarantee he'll be a Cardinal. Otherwise, Burnett is out of the NL! Everybody wins! Woo-hoo!
  12. "the cardinals brass has come together and are having an organizational meeting right now in the dallas hotel. This was mentioned after they reported that Burnett would give the Cards one last chance to improve their offer." The suspense is killing me. If St. Louis offers a guaranteed fifth year (which, despite early reports, we did not), he's a Cardinal. No doubt in my mind. This is a rollercoaster ride. The offseason is fun to follow. The quote is from KFNS radio (just minutes ago).
  13. Oh, and uh, of course you have those that said: "OMG, $12 MILLION!?????????? THAT IS 2 MUCH HE DA INJURY RISKED PITCHA. WOW FREE AGENT C IS RIDIC." And then, an hour earlier, they were saying.. "HEY WAT DOES $11 MEAN IT IS ONLY $1 MORE DAN $10 MILLION SIGN HIM HE CAN HIT 100 WIT DA FASTBALL."
  14. Pissed off? Happy? Dissappointed? Confused as to how to feel? What's the general consensus over there right now? Bit of everything.
  15. Yeah... It's more depressing to have our minds toyed with like this. I know Cub fans can relate (again, with Furcal reportedly signing), but this happened last year with Reneteria, too. thestlcardinals.com guaranteed he would re-sign. I really had a good feeling about Burnett. And trading Burnett meant we could move Marquis for a much-needed outfielder. Our offseason was contingent on signing him, and now we have to resort to Plan B; we supposedly offered Jacque Jones a deal, too. Christ.
  16. It's now officially turned into a bidding war, and I think at this point we are done. I really thought we had him.
  17. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10338654/ Bradley for Zito? Are you kidding me? I thought there was talk that the Dodgers might non-tender him? I figured they were practically going to give him away for whatever they could get... but... Zito! Not to say this will happen, but this just comes as a complete shock (the fact that it's even being discussed).
  18. ! Wow, when I saw them throw that graphic up I thought, "Wow, I never realize Furcal was that patient.."
  19. OK. I'm just kind of paranoid with wthat's-his-face lurking around here with the Furcal/Zito crap; add that to the fact that I'm a Cards fan, and I know I'm probably a "suspect."
  20. The Steve Phillips explanation of how the meetings work is neat.
  21. Yes, entirely. PS: I didn't claim to see Burnett. Someone else did on STLToday. And he wasn't a 1-post n00b, either. Edit: PSS: And no, just because someone has a lot of posts does not mean that they can not lie. I understand everyone can. Thank you.
  22. This is a Cub board so banter is inevitably going to come about, but, in my defense... I wouldn't have mentioned the airport thing at all if it weren't for that Scout.com article that popped up. You can't tell me you wouldn't have taken a sighting more seriously -- eve nif just a little; I know that alone or with the article it still means almost nothing -- if an article that said he was on the verge of signing broke out less than an hour later. And here's an update from a Toronto newspaper... think it came out around 12:30 today: It still wasn't looking good for the Jays, despite their offer reportedly being longer than and superior to the four-year package of roughly $40 million (all figures U.S.) proposed by the Cards. The word is that Burnett is so gung-ho about playing in St. Louis that all it would take is for the Cards to guarantee a fifth year — or even an easily-vesting option for a fifth.
  23. From Rotoworld: Team sources told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the Cardinals won't guarantee A.J. Burnett a fifth year, something they'd likely need to do in order to sign him. Four years and $40 million isn't going to be enough. Sure Burnett's a gamble, but he should get a five-year, $60 million contract in a market that values Rafael Furcal at $13 million per year and Esteban Loaiza and Paul Byrd at $7 million. Dec. 5 - 3:14 am et It's from 3:15 AM on Monday morning... erm... apprently we didn't sign him?
  24. It has been reported that Zito has been traded to the Cubs. In turn, the Cubs have sent Todd Walker and Barry Zito to the Cards for Body Hart.
  25. you actually get to start seven false trade rumors before you get canned.
