    Looking around the Internet, the same people who say "we can't soften the game like this!" are the same ones who are outraged when Bonds gets drilled for hanging around on top of the plate.
  13. Whitey Herzog's teams had it down, and pretty much had to: the Cardinals and Royals were playing on carpet with deep fences. You needed singles and bunts and steals and all that jazz. The Cubs are playing on a slower surface with shorter fences. No excuse for smallball.
  14. Even that claim is sketchy, because Weaverball requires excellent fundamentals.
  15. Church didn't really make any offensive comments, though. He just asked "do all Jews go to hell?", to which I'd like to think the answer is "no of course not." The chapel leader who said "yes" is the guy we should be disgusted at. If the guy just said "Jews can go to heaven" Ryan would've said "oh okay thanks" and it would be a non-story, I'd like to think. I'm pretty sure Frank Robinson does have some grudge against him, though, as Church started the season in the minors, I believe in favor of Brandon Watson. Frank Robinson is an idiot, though. I'd take Church if he won't use him.

  19. I love how Hawk Harrelson mysteriously disappears for innings at a time, bu then Darrin Jackson is left to fend for himself. You know the scene in Wayne's World when Rob Lowe's character fires Wayne mid-show for the "He blows goats, I have proof" card, so Garth has to do the show himself? Yeah, that's DJ during a Hawk Vanish. "We have a good game.......not...."

  22. Bobby Valentine is managing in Japan. I guess they can still be "in baseball" in a coaching, announcing, advising capacity. Once you're at that level, somebody finds a job for you, whether you deserve it or not.
  23. Not to go too far off-topic with my U2 love, but October gets way too much flak. It fits nicely between Boy and War with the whole Angry Irish Catholic Youth theme. I also think the Cubs should get rid of this NL-style Station-To-Station baseball. They should concentrate on keeping their pitch counts and runs against Low, and if the hitters just wait for the right pitch, they can be Heroes. Then everything will be Hunky Dory. How do you like THAT.
