  1. This appears to be one of their "tests" with Ha. The kind they tried with Jay Jackson a couple of years ago, to help prove that he's got thick skin. Of course, Jay handled his demotion to Daytona well that year, but hasn't pitched well since. Good call Cubs. The idea that everyone is handled to perfection isn't even in my mind, but to me, stuff like this shouldn't happen.
  2. My guess is ProSportsDaily, although I haven't ever looked at their message boards before.
  3. Yeah, because this is EXACTLY what everyone is saying. For someone who accuses people of not comprehending things on a routine basis, I think you better look in the mirror. The point here is that LeMahieu has more longterm potential than Barney. And it's not a knock on Barney either, who holds value to us as a cheap guy for a few years as a utility player. Not every youngster you have has to become A-Rod in order for him to have value to your club.
  4. Springer isn't my top choice, but it's not like he's a reach either. He started off the year slowly, but has certainly come on strong since then. He has contact issues, but he also has 30-30 potential as well. If he turns into a pre-roid Sosa, it wouldn't shock me. I want one of the pitchers personally, but adding a guy like him and getting pitching later wouldn't be the end of the world.
  5. I'm going to throw this out there, but I think Szczur is going to wind up somewhere in the top 100 next season. Callis loves him, as it is. And if he moves to Daytona and does anything like he's doing in Peoria, we've got ourselves a very well thought of prospect with him for sure.
  6. If Barney can keep his OPS above .700 for the entire season, I'd be shocked. He's got a very good glove, but to be a fulltime starter for us instead of a utility guy, I think he needs to develop into(assuming he's not now) a .280/.330/.385ish type guy offensively. And even then, I think LeMahieu winds up much better offensively than that, only thing is whether or not he can stick at the spot.
  7. If it somehow came down to Bubba or Bauer, who would you take? I think I'd be in the minority here, but I'd go with Bauer. In fact, I think at this point I'd take Bauer over everyone other than Rendon personally.
  8. I don't think it has anything to do with bunting honestly. Butler had a hell of an eye. He walked a ton to have played in era where it wasn't emphasized as much as it is now. Campana has alot of the same skillset that Butler did, but probably needs to double his walk totals, if he's ever going to have a legit chance at being an everyday player. I agree that the main reason Butler was so good was because he walked a lot. But were his walks totals higher because pitchers were trying to pitch around his bunt attempts? Hmm. Guess that's possible, but nothing we'll ever be able to prove. You'd think a manager would just tell his pitcher to pitch though. A bunt base hit is no different than a walk, in the end. Hell, with the walk, he's even a tad more rested to steal second. :D

  10. He's a league minimum salary guy who has some serious speed and is a decent fielder. 25th man? Sure. It even would save us a tad of money from signing a Reed Johnson to a mill or so deal. It may not seem like it's all that important, but that extra 600,000 can be used wisely elsewhere. I pull for all these guys, because the more minimum salary guys we have that are capable major league players, the more we can spend on true impact talent.
  11. I'd be pretty disappointed with this personally. DJ has torn it up in AA this year, but unless he's getting fulltime at bats, I don't see the point here. Reward? Give it to him at the end of the season with a September callup. Otherwise, bring up someone else, unless you're giving him starter's at bats. Flaherty seems like the most logical choice(as mentioned earlier). He's more of a utility type, has more pop and the organization appears to already consider him a "utility" guy as well(based on Cubs Convention comments). I have really warned to LeMahieu as a longterm answer for us at 2B(assuming he doesn't outgrow it). I like Flaherty too, but considering he's older, has more pop, and probably isn't thought of as a long term answer at any certain position, I'd be all for giving him this callup instead. Because as much as we all expect Barney to slump, he's done a solid job to date, and is undeserving of getting benched at this time.
  12. Having him as the 24th or 25th player on the team is perfectly fine with me. I don't want him in the lineup consistently unless injuries necessitate it (as they have now), but he's cheap, young, versatile, plays excellent defense and excels as a pinch runner. He won't hit much at all probably, but he certainly brings value to the team. Yes.
  13. if you're drafting a guy like that it has to be outside the top 10 rounds. you don't spend an early pick on a guy who has a firm commitment unless you've got a good sense that you can buy him out of that commitment. Yeah, I agree. If I remember correctly, the Cards took Austin Wilson somewhere around the 10th round last year. They didn't get him, but evidently made a very serious run at least. We typically sign 9 of our top 10, so MAYBE you take a chance outside the first 5 rounds, but before the 10th? Depending on what other kind of talent is out there. To me, the best case scenario and our best shot at pulling something off like this would be to draft Bradley, spread his bonus out over 5 years and then give Bell top 5-10 pick money as well, to try and entice him.
  14. Kurcz only went 3 tonight, but he didn't pitch all that well and I'm guessing they've got him on a very strict pitch count anyway. Beeler went 4, giving up 6 hits, 2 runs, walked 1 and K'd 5. Szczur is 4-4 with 2 doubles and a steal.
  15. John Stilson, a college righty who may or may not wind up as a closer tore his labrum. He was considered a potential first rounder. Josh Bell, possibly the best high school hitter in the draft(more advanced, but less upside than Bubba) sent letters out to all teams saying not to draft him, he's going to Texas in the fall. It'd be phenomenal if we could take a pitcher in the 1st and then overslot the hell out of Bell to make him change his tune. Stilson could become a good latter round overslot as well at this stage.
  16. Hmmm. Ramirez has a complete NTC and even if he agrees to be dealt, then his option next year kicks in at 16.5 mill. Considering his season to date and weigh that with what he's going to be owed for the following year if he's dealt and guess what? He ain't movin'. Soriano? 3 years and 54 mill AFTER this season. He ain't movin'. Go ahead and bring up Vernon Wells got traded. Not happening again. Fukudome? He's probably movable, but we'd probably have to pay some money out and still wouldn't receive much in return. Grabow? Every team in baseball has one of them and ours is more expensive than the rest of them? Not exactly tradeable. Dempster? His slow start has skewed his numbers a little, but he's paid alot and he's not exactly a HUGE value because of that anyway. Add in the bad start and the fact that he has a 15 mill player option on top of this year and he ain't going nowhere either. Byrd was probably about the only piece we could have moved this year and he wouldn't have brought us a ton back either. Top prospects from the Yankees? For THESE guys. Come on, man.
  17. Luis Flores has hit another homer tonight. This, of course, makes total sense, because he hit 7 in 477 at bats in his minor league career until this season, where he's hit 6 in 37.
  18. Here's my top 50. It'd be great if we somehow wound up with 2-3 of these guys. Rendon 3B Bundy HS RHP Bauer RHP Cole RHP Hultzen LHP Starling HS OF A Bradley HS RHP Purke(assuming health concerns aren't all that bad) LHP Springer OF Jungmann RHP Barnes RHP Cron 1B Je Bradley LHP Josh Bell HS OF Norris HS LHP Swihart HS C Gray RHP Mahtook OF Derek Fisher HS OF Guerrieri HS RHP Owens HS LHP Lindor HS SS Susac C Meyer RHP Jackie Bradley OF Dillon Howard HS RHP Esposito SS/3B Osich LHP Meo RHP Nimmo HS OF Beede HS RHP Wong 2B Tyler Anderson LHP Maples HS RHP Greene HS OF Joe Ross HS RHP Goodwin OF Vogelbach HS 1B Hedges HS C Garvin LHP Conley LHP Dickerson 1B/OF Carson Smith RHP Oropesa 1B/3B Gaedele OF Delmonico HS C Capps RHP O'Brien C Gardeck RHP Cave LHP/OF I'll admit that this list has some guys who play on the corners that may not deserve THIS high of rankings, but I just don't think we need middle infielders, unless they're power bats, for the most part.
  19. Junior Lake had a homer, a triple and 5 RBI's tonight anyway.
  20. According to Chicagocubsonline via twitter he doubled over in pain after a pitch and he left the game after that. :x Any chance it was food poisoning :bye: I hope so, I guess? Our pitchers seem to be as brittle as they come. I hope he's allright, because he's really emerged this year as a true prospect.
  21. According to Chicagocubsonline via twitter he bent over after a pitch and he left the game after that. :x He called for the coaches.
  22. Rendon played 2B yesterday, for what it's worth. I guess it's at least POSSIBLE that when his medicals get released to teams, he could slide some. If he were to be there, surely he;d be our guy, right?
  23. While I seriously doubt Swihart falls past a team like Boston, if him or Hedges were available in the 2nd, I'd hope like hell we take advantage of it and do what it takes to sign them.
  24. While his upside may be slightly higher than some of the other pitchers likely to be available, his downside is quite a bit lower than theirs as well. Give me the Jungmann's, Barnes' and Gray's of this draft over Meyer for that exact reason.
  25. Geez, I hope we don't reach on Baez.
