  1. I guess I look at Syndergaard as the single biggest upside guy out of the group. Followed by Turner, then Nicolino with a slight advantage over Smyly and Crosby. If not for injury issues, I'd have Crosby higher though admittedly. The key though for me in this case is I'd value either of Gose or Marisnick moreso than the series of lefties. To the point where I'd take one of them and Syndergaard with anyone else I listed. On a different, but related note, a development that hasn't gotten mentioned yet today is Porcello opted out of his contract to become arb eligible. He'll probably make between 3 and 4 mill now, possibly making it easier to deal for him in a Garza package.
  2. I'm higher on their guys than any of these other teams, but just about any grouping of Marisnick or Gose with 2 of Syndergaard, Nicolino, Hutchison, and McGuire would do it for me. But I'm a big believer in Syndergaard and Nicolino, in particular.
  3. I'd jump all over it, if it was offered. Personally, if the Yanks offered Betances/Sanchez/Williams, I'd still do it. And I'm not even a fan of Betances. I'd take Turner/Smyly/Crosby over the Yanks offer I just made up though and probably 10 different scenarios with the Jays over either Detroit or New York. If this thing goes into February though, Boston could make things very interesting with Barnes and/or Owens as PTBNL's, along with a Middlebrooks, Kalish, Ranaudo, or Lavarnway type deal. But, I hope the Rizzo trade puts trading Garza into "get it done now" mode. Blue Jays, Tigers, Yanks, and Red Sox in that order is my preference.
  4. Honestly, I was more of a Sickels fan before I really got into prospects as much as I am now. Before, I kind of thought all these guys were kind of equal, but since, I've even noticed a couple of snide remarks from some of these guys towards Sickels. Making it seem like he's not thought of as on their level. And then he comments that he's never even heard of Na before and it makes me wonder if they're right. I understand it's impossible to literally know the rosters of every minor league team there is, but to me, an "expert" should at least have guys who get solid bonuses on their watch list. Callis was asked about him and immediately responded, for instance. Law and Goldstein as well.
  5. Not that I thought he was a realistic option to begin with, but the Rizzo trade pretty much eliminates Jesus Montero from any possible discussions we have with the Yanks.
  6. You called Szczur and McNutt. Cates at 16 was a surprise for me. Didn't make top 25 of Pads, so I figured he was a straight C guy. Surprised Torreyes was a C+, but I admit that I mark out for him. Still, I expect he'll vault up lists next year.

  8. Rest of the offseason, now that we're definitively in "rebuild" mode. Trade Garza to Detroit for Turner/Smyly/Crosby, include Dewitt, since they need a utility guy. Trade Byrd to Nats for Deston Hood. Trade Soriano and 45 mill to Orioles for Bridwell. Soriano's 18 mill over next 3 becomes 22.5 over 2. Saving 12 mill by these 3 trades. Payroll at 96 mill. Sign Jeff Francis 1/4. Sign Wood 2/7(appeases meatballs). Sign Cespedes 4/36, 12 mill 1st year. Sign Soler 5/20 8 mill 1st year. Payroll at 123. Spend 7 mill on IFA's. Spend 3-5 mill on backup corner guy, another couple of depth guys for starting pitchers and a bullpen guy(another Corpas type). Projected lineup becomes DeJesus, Barney, Castro, LaHair, Cespedes, Soto, Stewart, and Sappelt. Rotation is Dempster/Francis/Volstad/Wood/Wells. If baseball budget is 150 mill, leaves 15 to spend on draft and IFA period.
  9. Business is business. First off, if Kerry signs somewhere else, I won't blame him. His quote came before it was probably apparent to him we were going to totally rebuild. Secondly, if we don't sign him, I won't blame Theo either. If Kerry wants 3.5 mill or something similar, it probably makes better sense for us to put that money into IFA's anyway. Nostalgia or not. Piss off the meatball fan? So what. There'll be enough excitement around this rebuild to where I think we'll still have plenty of folks showing up.
  10. As far as organizations go, after this trade, I've got us higher than the Reds, Indians, Twins, Astros, Tigers, Phillies, Brewers, Giants, White Sox, Mets, Angels, Marlins, and Dodgers. 17th is where I've got us right now, this trade(Rizzo/Cates) put us ahead of the Dodgers, Mets, Angels, Twins, and Tigers. A Garza trade would put us ahead of Baltimore, St Louis, the Yanks, Rockies, Nats, and Boston, in my eyes. Adding Soler as well would put us into the top 10.
  11. They don't deserve anything really. From the standpoint of they were stupid enough to let him go, I agree completely. From the standpoint of MacPhail's comp, I guess they should get a low level minor league filler type and a little cash. From the affect he brought to their organization, as to how valuable he was, I honestly think it's yet to be determined. Personally, I think Cherington will do just fine. If they let him. But considering they already overturned his first choice for manager, I certainly have doubts. Bottom line is Larry is kicking himself in the ass for allowing it to go down the way it did.
  12. Callis brought up a good point about Theo's compensation. Boston DESERVES something good, but they're not going to get it. Because Lucchino let us talk to Theo without discussing comp beforehand. Oopsy.
  13. On my cell, so I can't post a link, but read Cespedes will be resident around January 15th, followed by petitioning MLB for FA status. Said it's likely, despite 65 to 80 mill rumors, his likely contract will be around 4/32. Some teams have backed away. Soler is still my first choice, of the 2. But, at THAT price, go get them both Theo.......
  14. Yeah, Wood is the most legit of the 3, shouldn't have called him a lotto ticket guy, but I think if he proves himself to be more than a league average starter, it's a definite positive. Kyle, I disagree on LaHair, by the way. If he(obviously a major IF) was sporting an .800 OPS at the break for us, I think he'd have some solid trade value. Not top 100 prospect value, but moreso than what I think we'll get for Byrd, if he's currently dealt.
  15. On a big picture note, this offseason, Theo has acquired 3 lottery tickets and has evidently decided to play another one as well. Stewart, Wood, Volstad, and LaHair. How many, if any, do you guys see turning in a 3 WAR season in 2012 and becoming excellent trade bait or potentially long term answers for us? Personally, I think we'll see Wood and LaHair surprise, Stewart be on the bench by midseason and Volstad basically being the epitomy of a 5th starter.
  16. Give Levine props for this as well, he had said it'd probably take some of our young relief pitching to get Rizzo.
  17. 2 things that may have hurt Rizzo's value and helped us in acquiring him are he struggled at the major league level, which is no big deal for a 21 year old. But, other teams got a better look at him as well and maybe they saw something they didn't like? Because Tampa certainly could have trumped what we gave up very easily, Toronto as well, and they were both rumored to be in on him. Secondly, minor league first basemen just don't carry as much value, in my opinion, as other positions. Up the middle guys and pitching are what's valued for the most part.
  18. Put this in IFA thread by mistake, but Callis has Rizzo 42nd on personal top 50. Brett is 28th and Baez is somewhere between them.
  19. Oops, wrong thread.
  20. Toonster, yeah, I meant Destin Hood for Byrd. I always liked Tillman, saw him pitch in Norfolk a few times and in Baltimore once as well(one of his only good starts probably} but if we could get a Bridwell type arm for him, I'd consider that a win for us too.
  21. Garza for Turner/Smyly/Crosby, Byrd for Hood, and Soriano for Tillman is what I'm hoping for at this point, unless Toronto steps up and offers us something good for Garza.
  22. Yes. And he tore up AAA at 21 years old, while Cashner missed most of the season. I'm pretty shocked it took that little(since they view Cashner as a pen guy) to get Rizzo. I was thinking Cashner and McNutt or something like that.
  23. As much as we all [expletive] on LaHair, there's good baseball guys out there, like Goldstein and Badler, that think he'll continue to hit in the majors. I think I like the idea of giving him a shot to see if that happens. Because then, you've enhanced his trade value as well, since we've got our longterm answer waiting now. In Theo, we trust. If he sucks, we've got Rizzo waiting anyway, if not, Theo turned a guy headed to Japan into a valuable trade piece.
  24. This is the actual move that says unequivocally, we're rebuilding. Passing on Prince to do this, makes it official. Jed and Jason must really love Rizzo. Draft him, leave for SD, trade for him, leave for Chicago, trade for him. Let's deal Garza, get Soler, and sign some other IFA now. Cates is intriguing too. They must have liked him a lot to give him close to 800,000 in 2010.
  25. Rizzo is a top 40ish type guy right now.
