  1. Duquette just told Bowden the O's WILL add experienced pitching before leaving the meetings..... Edit: Also looking for a left handed hitting LFer.
  2. Is someone going to beat Walker, Franklin, and more for Price? I seriously doubt it myself. And after going all-in with Cano, even if its not Price, you have to think they'll try to package them together to get the biggest impact they can. As an aside, I asked ABTY if Shark is on the M's radar and he said likely only as a plan B, after Price, Garza, Ubaldo, Tanaka, Santana, etc....
  3. ABTY said Twins, Orioles, Cubs may make sense in 3 way deal involving Wieters and Shark on Twitter. Maybe something like this? Twins get Wieters, Russell, Schoop Orioles get Samardzija, Vogelbach, Schierholtz, Pinto Cubs get Meyer, Gausman, Trevor May, Felix Jorge, Adrian Marin [expletive], I know its waaaay too big, but value seems fair.
  4. I'd rather see him posted now. If we can't afford a contract for him right now, with around 70 mill committed towards 2014, after arb raises, it's beyond sad. The Yankees, Dodgers, and Mariners appear to be our chief competitors, none of whom are great fits for Shark anyway(Mariners aren't giving up Walker for him), so Shark's market doesn't look like it'd be affected much, in my opinion.
  5. With Beltran they're at 182 million for 12 players, without A-Rod. EDIT: Make that 175, they're at the backloaded part of a couple of those contracts. I've got them at 12/150. Passan said they're at 177 after arb raises, without A-Rod. Edit: The 177 figure includes Nova, Robertson, and Gardner. Considering they don't come close to 27 mill, I'm guessing it also counts insurances and stuff that count against the luxury threshold as well.
  6. 3/45 for Beltran. If they're honestly trying to stay under 189, Tanaka isn't very realistic for them. Unless A-Rod comes off the payroll anyway....
  7. They're still talking, Its possible the blowup was a fabrication. Or it may have just been a play to get the Yanks to up their offer and he really has no intention of leaving them .
  8. How is a potential difference of $10m/year "moot" in favor of a hang-up over a NTC? Because no one has any clue about numbers being discussed. Other than Levine's 5/55 comment, followed by "they offered more than that" we've got no clue on money. If they're 10 mill a year off, it'd likely be leaked by one side or the other, wouldn't you think? That doesn't make the money moot nor do we have any more of a clue about an NTC and how much he wants one. Where are you getting this from? Unless things have changed, it was brought up a bunch last year in the negotiations that Shark was insistent on one.

  10. I understand what you're saying, I also get Shark evidently wants to maximize his earnings. If I 'm extending him though, I'm still looking at it as his first FA deal and trying to get a discount. The Shark camp may be in the total opposite mindset. They may very well want 20-25 mill per year to buy out the first 3 seasons of his FA. As has been mentioned, Shark is betting on himself. Of course, he said the same last year. So maybe what we see is all we're going to get. Is that enough to give him 20 mill per year in his first 3 FA years? Not if I can get a very solid return for him, in my opinion. Think it's a moot discussion though, the NTC is what's getting him dealt.
  11. Yeah, considering he's already made millions in his life, there's very little incentive to settle for such a relatively low number. The point of getting your own to sign an early extension is to get a hometown discount. Shark got more than most in his original deal and arguably didn't even provide value during it. It's a moot point though, I'm fairly confident that a NTC, not money, is the actual hang up here. The point is for the team to lock the player in at a reasonable rate and the player to lock in some long term security and make serious money for the first time. Samardzija already has made serious money, way more than most with his service time, therefore he lacks the motivation for the latter half of that equation. Just because the Cubs paid him a lot of money a few years ago when he wasn't that good doesn't mean he owes the Cubs anything in return or should be expected to give them a discount or something. Again, the NTC is likely the reason. But if you're extending your own, the vast majority take a bit less to stick around. Personally, if we agreed with him anywhere between 5/55 up to 5/70ish, I'm fine with it. But most do give a slight discount on their first long term deal. To me, him making money earlier shouldn't change that equation.

  13. We match up well with slower teams or teams that don't live on the perimeter, at least. That said, we're a team capable of pulling upsets, but also losing games we shouldn't. Basically just wildly inconsistent. If Hairston and McDonald ever play(doubtful from what I've heard) I think we're a legit top 10 team. Without them, borderline top 25, 5-7 seed type team. Not looking forward to Duke whatsoever, they're a matchup from hell for us this year.
  14. No mention of Ventura or Zimmer? If one of those two aren't in a KC deal, I'd definitely rather deal with others.
  15. Solid bullpen piece obviously. Russell seems expendable, if not, Raley and Rosscup have little chance of making the team.
  16. Damn, they tried to HIRE Theo as a consultant, while he was on leave from Boston. Maybe we do have a legit "in" with Tanaka after all.
  17. They can wait and do it the following year and still get the 20 mill. I can definitely see them holding off. If not though, what kind of contract does Tanaka get on the open market? At 25, would a team go more than 6 years on him? Is 6/120 realistic? I think that's in the area If he does get posted.
  18. Thanks Hoops. Wisler? Yeah, after getting Smith, my guess is Schierholtz isn't needed. Either way though, Wisler wouldn't be an option. He's a top 100 guy with upside from there.
  19. Certainly eliminates most. I could see us, Angels, Dodgers, and Yanks willing to go for it. Maybe Texas.
  20. Best deal from everyone. Odds seem better to me anyway. Oh and it needs to be mentioned again just how [expletive] stupid Jesse Rogers is.
  21. Tanaka's team voted against the cap. It'd be funny if they don't post him now.
  22. I was thinking Maeda was more of a back end type? I can't imagine the team getting 20 mill or nothing, when posting guys. Either way though, I've not been under the impression Maeda would fetch that even in the old system.
