  1. I look for that to continue all year long. :D
  2. I hope he is right. Get Clemons out of the NL Central. :D
  3. ..........David Kelton...........
  4. Last year the Cubs started the season with a lot of question marks. Lead off, closer, bull pen just to name a few. This year, everything seems to be set. No more experimenting. They can concentrate on fundamentals. The big question is......as it is every year, the health of Woody and Prior. If, and it is a big if all of the arms are healthy and the Cubs are in it come July, I look for a huge trade. Im talking all healthy arms. Miller, Guzman, Williamson..... I'm not saying they will all get traded, but that is a very nice start for say a Dunn, Abreu ect.. Just a thought. But to get back to the topic, IMO the Cubs have put themselves in position to contend. Now it is up to the players to produce. The only major difference between the Cubs and Cards is the Cards know how to win, The Cubs need to LEARN how to win, and handle the pressures that come with it. Grow as a TEAM if you will.
  5. Bruce, so far with this little sampling, who has impressed you the most today?
  6. I agree much to my dismay (regarding the Cubs. I usually agree with goony). However, if the deal nets the Cubs a power stick in the OF I won't be disapointed. I agree 100%. But the million dollar question is what power stick?
  7. Hey Vance, play GM again. You have listed potential suiters for Williamson, now can you rack your brain and come up with potential package deals with maybe Williamson, Walker, Welly, ect...to those suiters and what we could get in return. P.S. I still think you could be an excellant GM.
  8. Per ESPN, he has withdrawn from the Clasic. IMO very good news.
  9. It seems, to me at least, that it will. From the little I have seen, it seems like they have more of a "workman" type attitude. Like they know what it takes to get it done, and work on it. I have seen 22 spring trainings, and this one just seems diffrent to me. I see a lot of focus, a lot of personal commitment, and team commitment. Something that I have not seen since 1984.
  10. It seems to me that with Z, Williams, and Mad Dog coming into camp in better shape, and Aramis improving his off season work ethic that the players on the 06 Cubs team are taking things a bit more seriously. It seems to me that they are WORKING to make this team a winner. They seem to have the focus and drive to do what it takes to win. Does anyone else see this, or am I just being to optimistic?
  11. If Bruce says he is ok, thats good enough for me. Thanks Bruce.
  12. Makes trading Dunn even more plauseable. :D
  13. Very nice. I hope he can produce as expected. If so, he could be very good for a very long time. :D
  14. I say you gotta keep Williams unless he is used to get a BIG TIME BAT. Manny, Abreu, or Dunn. I liked most of what I saw from him last year. He is a year older and maybe a little more focused.
  15. You must remember, in basketball you have a salary cap. Kinda ties your hands. He could spend whatever he wants to in baseball to get the players he wants.
  16. I personally don't see a match with the Cubs and Boston. Boston isn't going to pay Manny to play elsewhere. The Cubs could likely expand the budget to absorb his contract, but if we did, I wouldn't offer as much in terms of players. If I'm taking on Manny's contract, then I'm not offering as much in the way of players. I might offer Murton and Williams or something comparable to that, but not much more. As far as Abreu, the contract isn't as ornerous and Abreu is a better defender, but not as potent with the bat. I'd offer a package of Williams, Pie, and Wellemeyer for Abreu. I'd substitute Welly for another minor leaguer if they desired. If they prefered Murton to Pie, I'd do that. If they prefered Hill to Williams, I could make that switch, but those are the deals I'd consider. Well done Vance, thanks. When Hendry gets fired, I nominate you for GM. :D
  17. huh? I second that. huh?
  18. I'm not Vance, but Philly would be stupid not to accept Williams, Pie and Hill for Abreu. Boston's in a different spot. They don't have to deal Manny, since they can afford him, but if they can fleece a team, they'll deal him. My guess is it would take Lee, Williams, Cedeno, Hill and Harvey with the Cubs picking up at least 75% of his salary. And I wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft pole. Maybe, just maybe in July.I can see that working for both clubs. Lets just hope the Sox dont get him first.
  19. Seems like everyone is "ouchy" today.
  20. Vance, let me pose this question to you. Play GM for a minute. What would you as GM give up to Boston to get Manny in return. That you think they would except. Same with Abreu and Philly.
  21. The Cubs aren't a match in a trade for Manny. Did you see what the Red Sox were rumored to have asked the Angels for? In today's LA Times, supposedly the Red Sox wanted Chone Figgins, Ervin Santana, and two of the top prospects in the system from the group of Kotchman, Wood, etc. in addition to the Angels picking up all of the 57 million owed to Manny. That would be equivalent to the Cubs giving up Murton, Jerome Williams, and since we don't have prospects as highly rated as the Angles...add Felix Pie, Rich Hill, and probably one or two more to get Manny with the Cubs picking up all of Manny's money. I'd love to have Manny in this line-up, but not at the player and salary price it will take to acquire him. I would be ok with Pie, Hill, Williams, Mutron, and say a Sing or lower level prospect. But the Sox would have to share the contract somehow. The Sox wouldn't give him for that, and if they did they would expect the Cubs to assume all the money. So, you're in agreement that the player cost combined with the money makes Manny unaquirable. Unfortunatly.....yes. But it would be nice if Jimbo would at least ask.

  23. Do you have the right thread? Also, back on topic: Who do you guys think we should platoon Jones with against lefties? Restovich? Mabry? Grissom? Hairston? Yes I had the right thread. The Mods must have edited the little argument that was festering here. I was attempting to be a peace maker.
  24. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isnt the idea of a discussion board to state your views and opinions, as well as to learn and understand others views and opinions? With an open mind.
