  1. It was cool that Sammy hit #600 off of Marquis, who was wearing Sammy's number.
  2. I'm satisfied with this lineup. I thought this thread was going to be about Theriot batting anywhere but 8th, actually.
  3. Awesome!
  4. It would've been nice if the refs had called the blatant foul on Coble's 3 attempt. Why the hell was Luka taking the final 3?
  5. I don't know if this has been posted yet, but this is some Joe Morganesque dialogue. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdaGDr6yZtg&feature=related
  6. So far, Indians, Mets, Dodgers, Cardinals, and the home opener. I'm excited.
  7. Seriously, the hand wringing over this is incredible. I thought about it today while reading the free paper that had the chris brown story on its cover. The media and all the talking heads are completely blowing over the fact that he beat the crap out of his girlfriend, saying things like "we can't judge" and "we weren't there". That's a much bigger story than ARod doing roids, yet the blowhards are out in force on this one. It's even more amazing when you consider pop stars are so much more popular than athletes. I'd also say steroids use has been rampant in sports since at least the 60's. Baseball may have been a little late to the game, but I guarantee they were popular in the 80's, if not earlier. I knew a guy who dealt them, and used to use them, who was a minor league pitcher in the late 80's. I agree for the most part, but I think "we weren't there" is pretty valid in the Chris Brown-Rihanna situation. I'm not defending Brown, but he probably just didn't beat up his girlfriend out of thin air. There are a limited set of circumstances where a man can punch a woman in the face. They're pretty limited, but they're there. We'll have to see what happens when the truth comes out. For A-Rod, there were no absolutely extenuating circumstances whatsoever that led to him taking roids. (And yes, I don't even care about A-Rod or steriods anymore).
  8. So can we trade him to a city that doesn't have a cutting edge blindness facility now?
  9. Another tough loss for NU but I'm happy with the progress they've made this year. Their only big senior loss is Moore, and their freshmen are only going to get better. I've been happy with what I've seen from Shurna and Mirkovic over the last few games. Rowley is a much bigger project!
  10. That game broke my heart. It was awesome to see the student section hugely into the game -- Illinois 2 for 12 from the FT line... coincidence? We just couldn't handle the press, which is embarrassing. At the same time, it is a good feeling for teams to realize that NU basketball is no pushover and coming to Evanston is no easy task.
  11. It's a step up from "half-assed" AIDS.
  12. Someone needs to teach the folks at the CDC about reducing fractions. Haha yeah, and for a male to receive oral sex it was "0.5 out of 10,000."
  13. how can you not like craig biggio? agreed on bagwell. His tendency to cover his elbow in body armor and lean into pitches?
  14. Wow, I guess the 1 in 500 I heard from my professor was generous. That CDC source says it's 5 in 10,000. And yes, the average heterosexual male will not have receptive anal intercourse or insertive anal intercourse (possible, but certainly not "average"). The two riskiest sexual activities a male can engage in for contracting HIV.
  15. Firstly, the odds that the average American heterosexual male will have sex with an HIV-positive woman are relatively slim. Secondly, even if a man has unprotected vaginal intercourse with an HIV-positive woman there's about a 1 in 500 chance he will contract HIV, according to current estimates. These are not odds I would ever play around with, but for a heterosexual male there is not a blood-blood or mucous membrane-mucous membrane contact in vaginal intercourse the same way there is in anal sex. The AIDS epidemic in Africa exists in large part because a lot of African women who have HIV have children who are born with HIV. Some of those children are males. Those males have unprotected sex with women, who then get HIV and have children. A lot of these individuals don't know they are HIV-positive and it spreads. And yes, sharing hypodermic needles doesn't help either. Don't make stupid claims. For a heterosexual male to get HIV through vaginal intercourse, he has to be either incredibly unlucky or have a lot of unprotected sex with a lot of HIV-positive women.
  16. On the downside, the whole AIDS thing. I'm not saying I want to be Robbie Alomar. I'm just saying I wish I were a MLB player. It's a guarantee for hot tail. Pick up a guitar. Guitar > baseball for tail. probably better for AIDS acquisition too. If you're a heterosexual male, it's pretty hard to get AIDS. LOL Care to elaborate?

  18. My favorite
  19. Good luck with that. Go for Maris while you're at it. Now those would be real "witch hunts." You can nit pick all you want but nothing in baseball history will compare to your tarnished heroes from the steroids era. You sound like someone told you there is no Santa Claus. maris was a good power hitter who suddenly had the best HR season in the history of baseball, but he went bald during that year and then got hurt a lot afterward and retired, never coming close to approaching that homer total. fits the profile Roger actually lost weight that year on his skinny frame with no increase in head size. He was protected in the lineup most of the year by a good Yankee lineup and saw a lot of fastballs down the middle and was the perfect hitter for Yankee Stadium's short porch. How about comparing Aaron's career home run consistency with McGwire, Sosa, Bonds, etc? How about it Meph? FYI, IMB your man Obama just said at his press conference that A-Roid and all the guilty players of the steroid era had "tarnished" baseball. I thought it was a great choice of words. Now who could argue with someone as smart as Obama? hank aaron hit 29 home runs in 160 games as a 34-year old, then hit 44 as a 35-year olda nd hit a career high 47 as a 37-year old. He had his best power years well past his prime. He hit 40 home runs as a 39-year old. his profile fits that of a steroid user. The only reason he was able to break ruth's record was because he played longer than most players were able to, and we all already acknowledge that steroids prolonged bonds' career. looks like aaron is dirty too Not even close to the Bonds increase in home runs. Aaron never even hit 50. Time to move on and admit you are wrong. 50 home runs is the benchmark for a steroid user? because he didn't hit as many as bonds, that means he's innocent? He missed your magical 50-home run mark by 3 whole home runs when he was 37-years old. That's more than Bonds hit at that age and aaron did it in fewer plate appearances. Everyone looks at Sosa and assumes with only circumstantial evidence that he was a user, but there's as much circumstantial evidence that aaron used, too. I don't think Aaron had the one-year weight gains and other physical changes that Bonds, McGwire and Sosa did. Look at the number of 50+ home runs season in the 60's and 70s compared to the steroid era - not even close even if you take out Brady (10 to 50) Anderson. Hasn't home run totals gone down a tad since drug testing began? Do you think all 104 of those positive tests were wrong? The steroid era was a joke. How can you argue with Turk? He played during the steroid era. His 2006 statements looks pretty prophetic. " For the last time... steroid-users don't necessarily have to have large muscles or experience huge gains in muscle mass. You can reap steroid-induced advantages in other ways besides muscles -- e.g. reduced recovery time -- which can attribute to better numbers. HGH is a different story -- it WILL make you bigger.
  20. Great article. Any yes, I loved that. "Welcome to the big leagues"
  21. Exactly. I don't know what Rodriguez did to deserve this, but the person in NY that did this must really not like the guy. I'd be willing to put a lot of money on whomever leaked this being a Yankee fan. I don't understand why many Yankee fans dislike A-Rod so much. He hasn't been very good for them in the postseason. He's been good for them in the postseason more often than he's been bad. Oh of course he has. I was just getting at the fact that fans are usually stupid. He was supposed to make them the best team in baseball, and they haven't made much noise in the playoffs since he got there.

  23. Here's part 2 of the interview for anyone interested. Pretty funny stuff: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=8479
