  1. In the comments section: http://hirejimessian.com/index.php/2008/01/18/i-wish-i-could-say-its-a-pleasure-to-meet-you/ Gee Mat Jew= Gary Mathews jr., if you're not thinking right. By the way, make sure to read the article (same on as in Baseball Discussions) for some classic Hendry quotes including some naughty language. So, would you be cool with: Soriano Roberts Lee Ramirez Fukudome Matthews Jr. Soto Theriot Rotation: Bedard Zambrano Lilly Lieber Marshall With Dempster/or Marquis and Derosa off the books, if you're wondering about salary. Sarge jr. can hit righties pretty well (.800 OPS) last year in addition to great D, so if you can find a platoon guy who can hit lefties (maybe get Payton in the Bedard/Roberts deal), production from CF would be sufficient. Just passing it along
  2. Me too. http://www.stltoday.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=515401 http://www.stltoday.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=515385
  3. hmmm...this seems pretty ok... how would he "know" that? North's just talking about rumors. I wouldn't put too much faith in what he said (besides, he said Pie, Colvin, and others...) North couldn't even pronounce Colvin's name earlier this morning, so I wouldn't put much stock into it. He referred to him as "Ty...Ty..something". Unless DeRosa is lying, it's not BS. It's from Cubs.com
  4. Ditto. Danks has an excellent approach (as many BB's as SO, IIRC), and the junior year is when you usually see guys like him make that jump from very good college player to great college player. I'm kind of foreshadowing that for Danks, and he's a great athlete as well.
  5. Assuming we offer him arbi, if the team who signs him is not picking 1-15, then we get their first rounder and a sandwich (unless the team signs a higher Type A, then we get their second rounder, which is highly unlikely since Elias ranked him in the top 20 of all players (FA and non-FA) this offseason). If the team is picking 1-15, then we get their second rounder and a sandwich. I'm pretty sure on that, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Correct.
  6. I agree, and if the price is as low as Hart and Veal, sign me up. I'm not enthralled in getting another reliever, but that is a darn good value trade considering the draft picks we'd get for Nathan after he walks. Yes, this. Upgrading the major league team for one year and then upgrading the minor league talent the next (better than Veal and Hart potentially) is the smart move.
  7. Cesar Izturis says "Me TOO!" Neifi finished 11th in ROY voting, does that count for anything? Of course it does 8-) Hypothetical: Would you rather have Kaz Matsui at second with his contract or Brian Roberts for Gallagher/Marshall/Cedeno?
  8. In fairness to Levine, he was the first to highlight the interest in Lieber. And was the first person to mention the Cubs would have interest in Roberts. He said that on the radio before the winter meetings, and that's why I posted the thread that is now known as "The Brian Roberts thread". The 0% quote is a little iffy though, it basically sounded like at the moment the Cubs have 0% chance of getting him, because the Orioles weren't interested in moving him until after Bedard is traded.
  9. yeah, that's not true at all. after all, he's not playing for free. also, i'd rather have marshall out there than lieber. so i'd say the worst case scenario is lieber sucks, steals $3.5 mil and the cubs lose games because a better pitcher loses starts. or, the cubs could trade marquis/dempster, lieber (predictably) gets hurt, and the cubs are thin in the rotation. You do realize that, without Lieber, about 90% of the people here wanted to trade Marquis/Dempster anyways, leaving us in the same exact scenario as you presented. It's a one year deal, and then bam, we're off the hook. I don't think it impacts any other moves we'd make this year, so what does it really matter? It's not like he's going to be making 3.5 million for 4 years with us.
  10. And out an extra $3.5M. I'd rather put that towards taking a risk a position we have real holes at. 3.5 million isn't that big of a deal to us, when the payroll has been rumored to be as high as 135 million. And who can you get for 3.5 million that would fill a hole of ours?
  11. Good move. I don't see how people can bash this move when the absolute worst case scenario is: We are in the same situation we were expecting to be in.
  12. 2nd-3rd round. It'd be interesting for a team to go for a Jordan Danks and Russell draft, reuniting the two in the minors. I'm pretty high on Danks myself. And for some reason, Chris Duncan is always the comparison my head gives me when I think of Kyle Russell. Obviously though, he's got the potential for much greater...but also the potential for much worse.
  13. lamp.
  14. Well, the OP's intent was to flip him off to Baltimore, not keep him. And i'm sticking to my guns on the overrated thing Ping. He's reportedly the main piece in a deal for the best pitcher in the MLB, and there's a good chance he puts up .290/.360 with some putrid slugging. Even with the steals and defense, I just think it's wrong that some teams (IMO) tend to see him as a little more valuable than what he really will be. His OBP at AAA wasn't anything holy, and it's not like he was extremely young for the league or anything either.
  15. Actually, we get Roberts, Bedard, and Bucholz. Don't see any reason not to make that deal. Of course, i'm not sure Baltimore would accept Ellsbury and Gallagher for Bedard straight up, let alone for Bedard and Roberts.
  16. So you're saying you just made up that little bit to try to get this thread to 120 pg's? (i'm not saying that like i'm mad or anything, i'm just confused)
  17. If i'm Boston, i'm not sure I want Z over Buchholz, considering age, and the fact that Buchholz might be better. And then considering Z makes a ton of money. I'm definately passing on that if i'm Boston. Ellsbury, however, I agree is overrated. I really don't see much that leads me to believe he can consistently have an .800+ OPS at the major league level.
  18. Not that good of a minor league pitcher, not that good of a major league pitcher. Pretty horrible WHIP and BAA as well.
  19. Here's your completely random blog rumor for the night: http://hirejimessian.com/index.php/2008/01/14/hjes-first-scoop/
  20. I take pride in the fact that i've created this revolving monstrousity known as the Brian Roberts thread. May it never die
  21. My bad on the name, there's a mod on PSD with that name, I just got it confused. By the way, Stones exact words were "If the Dodgers are dangling Izturis for Ramirez straight up, you hold off, but if they include a prospect, it's a deal that has to be made". Then he replied that a Cedeno/Izturis infield is one that "lasts for 10 years". I remember that day vividly. That's amazing that you remember his exact words from a random day two years ago. No offense, but I doubt he said that. Just searched it real quick and found this: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=33230&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=stone+izturis I'm telling you, he even said "prospect" not "prospects". Yeah, so one unsubstantiated poster and your 2-year-old memory is beyond contestation. Not saying he never suggested a deal, but I highly doubt he was saying Izzy/ARam straight up, or even close. I posted another thread above your post with another quote fwiw. I'm telling you, he was throwing out different variations over the span of a couple days and one was Aramis for Izturis and a prospect, and then he raved about Izturis' defense and about how we would be set for forever with him and Cedeno. I think people hear what they want to hear, especially when it comes to Stone. Not that I think he would be a good GM; he wouldn't, IMO. Many other color analysts would make horrible GMs, too. I listen to Stone's spots quite a bit too on 670, and numerous times I've come here and elsewhere to find that a poster has either a) *greatly* misinterpreted what he was saying, or b) missed a key nuance in what was being discussed that totally changes the context and meaning of the discussion. Again, I'm not saying there was never any discussion around an ARam deal. Can you provide a link to an article that gives a direct quote? That's a much better source for something that someone said than 2nd-hand reporting of a verbal discussion on the radio. You know I can't, no article is going to randomly publish Steve Stone quotes form a morning radio show. I'm just saying I remember what he said, over the course of a couple days he threw out some "trade ARam to the Dodgers" scenario's and one of them was Ramirez for Izturis and a prospect. Maybe he meant a damn good prospect, but he never even elaborated on that, he just mentioned how it would be amazing being able to pencil in Izturis and Cedeno for the next ten years. I mean, come on, my name is "RammyFanny", I remember these kind of things when it comes to my favorite player :D
