  1. ...and the Cubs' staff would still be incapable of diagnosing the problem. Also, sign Drew.
  2. I like 'em, generally. WAY better than what they had before, and you generally can't go wrong with red and black.
  3. Interestingly, Adams himself is from NC (Raleigh, I believe). One of his songs is "Oh My Sweet Carolina," but it's confusing, because one of the lyrics is "I miss Kentucky and I miss my family." All that said, North Carolina is the greatest state in the nation, obviously.
  4. If the Cubs want to contend next year, they have to approach this offseason assuming Pie will not be their starting center fielder. That said, if Pie really impresses over the next few months, I could see him getting an early callup. So I think he deserves a shot, but I think the Cubs should assume he won't make it to start out with, as he'll probably be better off in Iowa to start with.
  5. And given that, on any given day, Wrigley can be either a hitter's park or a pitcher's park, the only way to consistently take advantage of our home field is to - gasp - get hitters who get on base a lot!
  6. Uh, I'm 32 and I keep improving. Drinking tolerances don't count. Awesome.
  7. While I admit that there are reasons for concern with Zambrano, they're pretty far down the list of things to worry about. Secondly, Zambrano's high walk totals this year were uncharacteristic, even for him - so I don't necessarily expect him to be that bad in the future. And lastly, Piniella, as much as I'm not crazy about him, has historically been much less abusive of his starting pitchers - so we probably won't see regular 120+ pitch outings all the time.
  8. Jim's words come off as if he's just blowing smoke and being nice. I sure hope so. Retaining Pierre would be entirely counterproductive.
  9. Ummmm...I disagree. Name 10 pitchers that are categorically better than Zambrano.
  10. I'm with Goony on this one. The potential upside to Wood is greater than any of the others, because there is a significant chance that he can become a great starter again. Also, I think it would be great to trade Eyre; his numbers this year make him look a lot better than he is: The good: Lefty 61.1 IP 3.38 ERA 10.71 K/9 The bad: 1.48 WHIP .345 OBP Against .457 SLG Against (for an .802 OPS against) 4.40 BB/9 All this considered, and considering his 2005 season, which was a career year for him, he might be significantly overvalued on the market, and could help net something real nice in a trade.
  11. I would just like to point out that, with this statement, you have just left yourself wide open for an inordinate amount of good-natured fun-poking.
  12. Cubs.com lists EPatt as a SS. Is that just a typo? Or has he seen any time at short? Also, I've noticed over the past couple years that Patterson seems to be a very streaky hitter - if that's not just perception (I'm too lazy to look it up), do you guys think it'll keep him from making an impact at the ML level?

I apologize for hijacking the thread. I actually meant the whole Cabrera/Crawford thing as a side note, and intended the discussion to continue on Mark Prior (although I should have realized that it wouldn't), who is far more pertinent to the Cubs' organization. SO: has anyone heard anything about Prior's status/outlook for next season? And, just for fun, any speculations about Prior's status/outlook for next season/his career?
  14. The idea of being (or calling someone) virtuously worthless makes me laugh.
  15. I'd argue that Baker's most egregious and condemnable errors took place in 2003 - running Mark Prior and Kerry Wood into the ground. For all of our ranting about Baker's abuse of Zambrano, Zambrano has never sustained the type of abuse Prior did in 2003. And while all of Baker's moronic in-game decisions may cost the Cubs a few wins over the course of a season, abusing Prior and Wood may have cost the Cubs their entire window of opportunity, to say nothing of potentially ruining two oustandingly promising careers.

No offense to Carl Crawford, but he does not belong in the same category as Miguel Cabrera. As far as Prior goes, this (the original post) is a very good question: does anyone know anything about his status? Also, I know it's a bad idea to count on him for next year, but what do people think his chances of a return to form are?
  17. While I don't want Piniella, I still can't see how Girardi and the Cubs are a match made in heaven. I'd rather have someone who is not so tied to the conventional wisdom, small ball, method of management. Largely, Vance, I agree with you. However, I REALLY don't want Piniella, and while Girardi is a bit of a conventional wisdom type of guy, I don't think he is to the same extent as many of the other old-school types. I would not complain at all if we hired Girardi (even if he's not perfect), but I sure would complain if we hired Piniella.
  18. Seconded. Retaining Aramis is far more important than who our manager winds up being.
  19. Just say no to Pierre. Outside of 2B, CF might be the best way for us to upgrade our offense this offseason, and there is NO WAY that Pierre will be worth whatever money he demands. Heck, I'd rather sign Lofton for a year - or move Jacque to CF and find someone for RF. Pierre is NOT GOOD.
  20. I'm all for what BK said: significantly upgrade the MIF somehow (sign Soriano, trade for Tejada or something like that), and give Theriot the other spot. He's better than anyone else we've got. However, an Izturis/Theriot MIF is terrible (a step up from Izturis/Cedeno, but still terrible), and would probably preclude us from the postseason, given that we don't have too many other opportunities to upgrade our offense, and our pitching is one huge question mark. So, if Hendry and/or whatever manager he hires (not Piniella, PLEASE!) could be convinced to bench Izturis (no), then things might work out for Theriot. But I doubt it. At the very least he deserves to be our main MIF off the bench.
  21. I agree that Pierre would probably be less effective as an individual in the 8th spot, for all the reasons that Frostwyrm has mentioned. However, that difference in his individual value would be pretty negligible, and he would help the team's overall value in the 8th spot by not getting so many PAs and not making so many outs in front of the 3-4-5 hitters. So if the question is this: "If Pierre must start on your team, where would you bat him?", then the answer is: "8th." If the question is: "Should you sign Pierre to a contract so he can bat 8th (or leadoff, for that matter)?" The answer is: "No."
  22. It would be just like Hendry to pay Zito everything he wants and then put him in the bullpen.
  23. Not that this thread was ever supposed to be about what to do with Murton and Theriot next year, but here are my thoughts: Hendry should do his best to keep Murton starting in LF next year. Only the opportunity for a very significant, long-term upgrade (Cabrera, Dunn) should change that, I feel. I believe he will continue to improve, and could very possibly become a very good hitter - and he's already producing at a decent rate as it is. Theriot should probably not be starting. I know he's been great for us so far, but his MiL numbers strongly suggest that he won't keep it up. It is possible (although unlikely), however, that he's turned a corner somehow and will continue to produce, so I think he should get as much playing time as he can as the principal utility infielder next year. On top of that, 2B is going to be one of the easiest positions to upgrade this offseason, as there are several reasonable (and not so reasonable) FA 2B on the market. That said, if Hendry can pull off significant upgrades in SS and/or CF (say, Andruw Jones or Vernon Wells in CF, or Tejada - yeah right - at SS) or move Jones to CF and land a big-time RF, then Theriot could certainly compete for a starting job.
