    i guess this is as good a time as any to remind all that last year Schwarber was on a 124/45/109, 86 BB pace (.255/.362/.529) in the half season he played in the bigs

    i don't know if this is really illustrative; Cubs have gotten: 3.64 WAR / 650 PA from non-Bryant LF 3.36 WAR / 650 PA from non-Bryant 3B so there's a clear (and massive) benefit that's been achieved by putting otherwise mediocre[1] players in advantageous positions; and you can also surely attribute Joe Maddon Alchemy to this, gaining added platoon advantage[2] this way [1] ZiPS preseason WAR projections / 650 PA: Javier Baez: 2.35 Jorge Soler: 1.52 Tommy La Stella: 1.52 Albert Almora: 1.37 Chris Coghlan: 0.90 Matt Szczur: 0.81 [2] deployment vs. strong-side pitching: vs. LHP (league average 26%) Szczur: 38%, .871 OPS Baez: 30%, .931 OPS Soler: 40% vs. RHP (league average 74%) La Stella: 89%, .896 OPS Coghlan: 91%

    he was right to try advancing there and just ran into bad luck with the ump blocking the ball, Coghlan is the real scourge for not following him to take 2B which would've put the game into extras with the 2-out hit

    for the last calendar year he's 4th in fWAR, ahead of Bryce Harper and Manny Machado for his career he's playing at better than a 7.5-win pace he's on pace for 47 HR and 43 2B he's cut his K rate by a full 8% this year he's a plus fielder at 3-4 positions he's under team control through 2021

    Baez & Szczur are comparable but i think the idea was he'd maybe make the playoff roster over somebody like Coghlan or La Stella, who are mostly worthless as runners and borderline defensive liabilities

    speed could also be scoring from 1st on a 2B / scoring from 2nd on a 1B, no?

    i think Kris Bryant even topped Hamilton (or possibly Dee Gordon i'm thinking of) for max running speed; it seems counter-intuitive because of disparity in short-burst acceleration between the two that greatly impacts SB totals for instance, but with a longer stride it makes some sense edit: found the comparison- it was 2 at-the-time-recent triples Petriello compared to Bryant's to contextualize speed http://m.mlb.com/news/article/124212824/chicago-cubs-rookie-kris-bryant-statcast-top-speed-triple and i see here acceleration shows time to reach top speed, so yeah that's quite a contrast

    for me it's hard to choose between the broadcast going to great lengths to not point out who (Birnbaum) made the horrendous giveaway on the 3rd goal, or the color guy showering Klinsmann with adulation for only wasting a full half on Wondo before inserting Pulisic into an already decided result
