    he was winning fine until he lost his most indispensable player, and there's been some bad breaks in close games going the other way; it happens, i'm really not remotely worried about the long-term forecast at this point

    Pitchers don't suck at hitting because they don't work on it enough, they suck at it because hitting his hard and pitching gets better and better. Scrappy McJunkball could scratch out a hit or two against the scrubs that pitched in yesteryear, not because he put in the time and effort. also the league differences probably play a part in this- why really bother hitting practice as an AL pitcher? then if you happen move to the NL are a total horsefeathers show out there; Garza, Lester, Quintana no reason whatsoever to have different rules for AL/NL

    i enjoyed Mendoza's commentary on ESPN but her worst characteristic was trying to co-opt red-ass viewpoints to earn her insider credibility and this is a real bad case of it

    i can't get worked up about the pen; last winter i wanted us to pursue Andrew Miller/Joe Kelly/Kimbrel and they all sucked so i let Theo sort it out and if it sucks judge Theo harshly for it

    idk...the heyman tweet makes it seem like the door might at least be somewhat open (he mentioned him for a reason) if the nationals don't get donaldson. it also is almost literally saying nothing, like most of his tweets, so whatever. i wouldn't call it a giant hole, tho. bryant makes them better the next two years. then they're stuck with worse-hitter-than-Albert-Almora in CF barring other major moves

    They've been in charge more than 5 years. Their actual average is 84-win baseball. Which, given their financial advantages, I think a C+ is plenty generous. So the Astros get a C+ this decade as well? Their losing was even more horrendous. I can take rebuids if they give 5 year stretches like the most recent, the problem is they should not need to rebuild this core already. they're set up to be an elite team for the foreseeable future, and we're now looking down the barrel at another rebuild

    there's really no reason to believe they're going to create a giant hole at one position to address another, i'm very confident in saying Robles simply isn't available here
