I agree; his continued presence the 4-spot is baffling. Not that it's news to anyone here, but among qualifying Cubs hitters, Castro ranks as follows: wOBA: Last (.278) BB%: Last (3.7%) LD%: Last (16.4%) GB%: First (60.3%) Soft%: First (24%) He might be the least well-suited position player to bat in that spot. Move him down until he gets right. This is just so depressing to read. He was someone I think pretty much everyone just assumed would be a lock to be productive. this is the great irony of those "can't rely too much on unproven prospects" arguments

5/26 update (162 G pace) Rizzo: 7.78 Bryant: 7.35 Fowler: 5.15 Russell: 3.17 Montero: 4.30 Coghlan: 2.63 Soler: 1.85 Castro: -0.94 Coghlan's an interesting case: he's had 8 games with just one plate appearance / also shielding him from LHP, so that effects his pace some, but he's also been evaluated by UZR as the 2nd-best fielding LF largely on account of his throwing, and he's on pace for 25+ HR while never before reaching double-digits, but then he's sitting at .220 BABIP after entering the season with a .324 career mark he's been the worst Cubs hitter for win contribution (-0.70 WPA), in large part due to situational splits: bases empty - .355 wOBA / .242 BABIP & 30% hard-hit runners on - .237 wOBA / .172 BABIP & 40% hard-hit all of this is basically a roundabout way of saying we've gotten a total bizarro-world version of Chris Coghlan the first two months of the season -

his whole career he averages 2 WAR per 155 G which makes him a useful guy but i'm done expecting further meaningful development - his flaws are probably fairly intrinsic - so if you're confident Baez can closely approximate that value i don't see the tragedy in parting with Castro for young unproven mlb-ready 55fv hitter or 60fv pitcher if you can, much as it pains me to say

i'd expect the vast majority of teams to value Schwarber more highly than Castro at the moment also, if i'm reading correctly, Soler is in the beginning of 6/$25.5M in obligations; with teams coveting middle of the order RH hitting, he's probably right up there with Arrieta, Russell & Schwarber battling for #3 spot Rizzo's the obvious #1, to me (is he #3 overall in baseball for trade value?) -
part of that differential was 'achieved' with 2 weeks of Mike Olt / Bad Mendy occupying Bryant's spot and about a month's worth of Schlitter and Coke replace the two gas cans with even replacement-level pen arms and that paints a rosier picture; this mostly tells us that bullpen construction wasn't handled super optimally in the offseason

in the last calendar year, 4 players have hit 35 HR or more (all were at least 6'2 and 230lb); i'm just going to say i don't think you're properly calibrated to how shitty this dumb offensive environment is now i don't remember specifically 'writing him off', but i've been consistent saying it seems other people's daydreams about him seem to be much higher than my expectations and he'd probably be best-served as trade bait if opposing GMs felt the same way -

what could you possibly see his upside as, to use such wild hyperbole i think we're mostly all going to be really jazzed if he's approaching .300 OBP and mid-20s HR with positive defensive impact, but that's so far divorced from your lofty praise that i can't really fathom what your fantasies for him are -
