Because no team with the payroll the size of ours should have Womack on the 25-man roster. It's not so much Womack vs the other options on the bench, as how bad our roster is right now. Never mind he played for the Yankees last year  He's an upgrade over Nefi, in my book so far.
There has to be someone out there somewhere managing, probably several people in fact, who are brilliant managers and exactly what we need. It's just a matter of doing the proper search instead of just going after a retread name or promoting some clown from within the organization.
It needs to be a controlled explosion... the core of these team is good that's locked up for a while, it's just the supporting players suck and terrible management.
Cuban actually hired people like Jeff Sagarin (who does the Sagarin ratings for USA Today for several sports... if you're a college sports fan you've heard of them) and others to develop private stats for the Mavs right when he took them over. If you want a guy who's a stat guru and would spend wisely, he's your man.
Watch, now we'll win a couple games (mainly because of the pitching), Baker will be hailed as a genius for his unusual, but brilliant managing and will get extended. Womack, Blanco, Pierre, Bynum, and Nefi will start the rest of the year.
Simply put, we have money to spend (actually a lot of money) and LF seems the best place to upgrade the offense. We're probably stuck with Jones and his production is excellent if you platoon him with someone who kills lefties, which Matt Murton happens to do. The FA field is weak at SS and Soriano at 2B doesn't give you much bang for your buck. C/3B/1st are locked up and Pie is the future at CF.
The Trib makes a lot more off the Cubs than just park revenue. They've got to make a killing on merchandise, plus Cubs games keeping cable systems from dropping WGN from their lineup.
