  1. Considering the money that's gotten thrown around so far nothing would surprise me.
  2. I do not believe that - I guess they are out of the Burnett race. My God.
  3. The Cubs have 3 times as many injuries to pitchers as the Cardinals?? Unless Brown can play RF I don't see how he fits on the Cubs roster.
  4. Why the heck would the Cubs want to sign another pitcher? It seems like they have enough arms as it is.
  5. You never know. I have nothing to back this up with but for some reason I feel like Kerry wouldn't mind leaving Chicago.
  6. For RF how about Abreu for Wood? I know a lot of people around here want Abreu for spare parts but I think this deal would make a lot of sense for both sides. edit: I forgot about Wood's NTC Only way I could see Wood for Abreu is if Wood's sent to TX and TX sends Blaylock to Philly. No one in their right mind would waive a NTC to go to Philly. Yeah the deal would make sense without the NTC, but it's there so it's a moot point.

  8. What am I to say to this? Neifi sucked. The fact that he had to play so often hurt this team. The fact that he hit atop the order hurt this team. There were other reasons as well. SS and the OF (the entire OF) were useless, the bench was worthless, the manager was stubbornly anti-objective. Starting pitchers failed to live up to hopes and parts of the bullpen stunk. But there is no possible way to gloss over the fact that Neifi at SS was a bad thing last year. Cedeno was no guarantee to be good, but given his 2004 season and the start to his 2005 in AAA, he was an infinitely better option than Neifi. Neifi is fine for the bench at minimal cost (not necessarily the minimum, as it's hard to get any veteran to play for what the kids cost - $500k-$750k is about what he's worth). There is nothing wrong with having somebody like him on your roster, at the end of the bench. But there is something terribly wrong with giving him 600 plate appearances and letting him hit at the top of the lineup in more than half of those at bats. Neifi's presence on the roster didn't lose games, Neifi's over abundant presence in the lineup did. Great post.
  9. Maybe they haven't. Would you rather play for Toronto @ 5/50 or St. Louis @ 4/40? Toronto @ 5/50 - I'm a friggen geedy S.O.B
  10. Wow, I would be shocked if we got Burnett. 5/50 just doesn't seem like money we'd throw at him. I guess they want to make a splash with the new ballpark?
  11. League minimum? I know at the least the Rockies and Royals wanted to sign Neifi to a 2 year deal to be a starter before we signed him for 2/5. Since he's a bench player I don't think anyone should be throwing much more money then the minimum and one year at him.
  12. Never have been never will be. I was born in St. Louis and moved up here when I was in the 4th grade because my dad's job got transfered. I remember showing up my first day of class wearing a t-shirt that said "I root for two teams - The Cardinals and whoever plays the Cubs". I was a very socially awkward child.
  13. Nefei role should be a 25th man defensive replacement type guy making the minimum. Nefei can be mildly useful if utilized correctly.
  14. Thanks guys, I'm the commish for this league and the guy who was getting LT threw a hissy fit.
  15. I don't care what people on here like or dislike about Neifi, to be honest. There are a ton of Neifi bashers on here that overlook the tools he has, which was my point. If Crusty new half a crap about running a team, Neifi would've been serving the roles he should and everybody would love him! It seems very few people here are ever happy with any Cub....kinda ironic on a Cubs messageboard  And Grudz is better defensively than all the other "average" second baseman. Neifi is a useful bench player. I don't think NSBB has a problem with Neifi, just how Dusty uses him.
  16. There is concrete evidence of their market value - it's what Hendery just paid them. That would be true if it was an efficient market, which it is not. How do I know it isn't efficient? If it was, records would directly reflect payroll. A contract’s value changes over its lifetime due to player performance and market conditions. As more information (i.e. player performance and market changes) emerges the contract value adjusts accordingly. Meaning what Hendry paid for Howry/Eyre is their current value. I’m not saying the market is completely efficient but it’s prolly more so then you think. Doesn't that assume perfect competency on every GM's part? Is Cristian Guzman's contract his current value? It assumes whatever the market decides to value certain skills. So yes when he signed it that was his market value.

  18. The Cardinals certainly won't. Bret Boone to the Cards, then. I'll see your Bret Boone and rise you the Cubs resigning Burnitz!
  19. "Almost" is the key word. Trading Juan Cruz for slugs like Pratt and Lewis was pretty dismal and qualifies for "fleeced" status in my books. Especially when you consider that the Braves were able to use Cruz as part of a package to land Tim Hudson. I think it's a fair distinction that when Hendry is trading "to get someone", he does a pretty good job(Nomar, Ramirez, Barrett, Lee). When he is trading "to get rid of someone", that's when he screws up(Cruz, Sosa, Farnsworth; Hawkins is the exception). No GM is right 100% of the time, bad moves happen to even to the best GM's.

  21. Assuming he's OK I'd do the deal if I were the Sox however Rob Neyer makes some good points. http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/insider/columns/story?columnist=neyer_rob&id=2234467
