  1. Unless they're going after Alonso, I'd assume it's pen help and maybeeee spin Wisdom or Madrigal for non-rule-V guys?
  2. Fan of both of those guys, but I'm relieved at the names not included.
  3. Completely reasonable opinion. The Cubs have done that so many times. I just think they will actually go for this one.
  4. I said last year, and nothing has changed, that I think they will sign Ohtani. As horrible as Ricketts is, it makes complete business sense to spend here, and the fact that they've been targeting supplemental pieces with everything pointing toward 2024 tells me Shohei is the prize they're after.
  5. While I still lean toward selling, I do think sending Smyly and Mancini to the phantom IL and adding a good SP at the deadline would make this team a pretty viable threat. Arguably the best 1-2 SP tandem in the NL and a pretty versatile lineup sets up well in the playoffs. Just dug such a big hole....
  6. Things are looking bleak for the St.Louis Cardinals.
  7. Over the last month (50 PAs), Mancini has a 39 wRC+
  8. I can think of a couple of guys he could replace.
  9. Get a major league pitcher in there or this is over.
  10. I know he put together some innings, but at no point did Michael Fulmer give me any confidence. During that streak, he had quite a few games with hard contact right at guys.
  11. I'm starting to develop a morbid fascination with Mancini's plate appearances.
  12. Hey, he saw 5 pitches before striking out. That's an improvement....
  13. I just want to see Mancini have a competitive AB.
  14. Didn't Wisdom just homer off a righty? He's sitting. Amaya sitting, as well, even though he's been catching Kyle.
  15. They didn't hand him the job. He had 99 PAs, Tom. The first handful were against brutal lefties and then he got platooned and things got more and more sporadic from there. I'm guessing the lack of flyballs is precisely because of this adjustment they're making in Iowa. The dude hits the ever-loving hell out of the ball and acquitted himself pretty well at 1b. He is clearly better than Mancini, and has real upside. Not playing him is stupid, full stop.

  17. Mancini looking worse than Hosmer. Meanwhile, Mervis creeping up near 1.000 OPS in Iowa.
  18. Mastrobuoni will have a career game, get a Bote contract and take tons of PAs away from higher ceiling guys. That's the most Cubs thing I could imagine.
  19. It's 2-0 and I have a bad feeling it's going to get worse.
  20. Damn Mancini did not look good in that PA. Swung and missed at ball one, fouled off a 4-seam strike, then missed badly on a mediocre breaking ball that ended in the middle of the zone.
  21. I just don't see it. Where on earth do the Cubs find real, 30+ HR power if all the traditional power slots are occupied by "line-drive" guys. Every time we find a long-term solution that is decent OBP/Low SLG, we lower the ceiling on how good this team can be. We have a ton of those guys already. I can see Kirillof having some value, but less to the Cubs than just about anyone.
  22. Oh, I absolutely agree. I really do appreciate Tom's sometimes fervent support of what some might consider roster flotsam.
