  1. I look at it this way: No matter how good a pitcher is, he simply cannot win a ball game by himself. All he can do is hold the other team down as best as he can and hope his offense can win the game. Many good pitchers win relatively few games because their team sucks, and many mediocre pitchers win a lot of games because their team has a powerhouse offense. Any pitchers win-loss record must be viewed in the context of their teams quality. Wins are totally a team stat, and a pitchers win total is simply the most overrated stat in baseball. Um... I've seen Zambrano do exactly that.
  2. I don't like to speculate, but Dusty did have his arm around him and almost surely said "Washington". Now, perhaps they were talking about George, but I really don't see what else it could be. Now, what the heck could we be getting from a first place team that has equal value. I, for one, do not want to see Jerry and his .370+ OBP leave.

  4. I really dont like the idea of getting Kearns. I mean, He had a Great 2003. If we could get 2003 Keans, I'd do it in a heartbeat. But, he has underacheived ever since. He, to me, is a HUGE risk. Especially when someone better (DUNN) could be had. I'd rather just have Murton play every day, rather then kearns, personally. But, I guess if it comes down to it, I wouldnt mind him. Boy, you could have said almost EXACTLY the same thing about Aramis Ramirez circa 2003. Perhaps you can help me with a question. How is BABIP a fair statistic. Aren't hitters who square up the ball and hit rockets more likely to have a high BABIP than, say, Rey Ordonez?

  6. Okay, so can we assume if Dunn IS in the lineup, that he is not coming to the cubs? It does seem strange that he would play against us if a deal is indeed in place.
  7. I can't believe some folks on this board were questioning his ability earlier in the year. I was questioning him since he had one more year before he could hit true FA, but he has been absolutely amazing since May. His OPS is approaching .950 (might actually be there since I haven't calculated it, but he came into tonight's game at .936) and 2 HR's, a double, and a walk will certainly help that :D I'm unspeakably glad I was wrong. 8. In the sixth, Peoria tied at 5. EPatt with two homeruns and all five RBI's.
  9. Not that I want to see Felix in Wrigley this summer, but...... 20 yr old Pie= 28 yr old Pierre, while being cheaper and not costing us any prospects. I'm fairly certain that Felix could put up a .319 OBP% right now, with the infield grass and all.
  10. I think this is going to be a very nice inning.
  11. Hmmm....mayhap the all-star break isn't coming at the best time. Hopefully the momentum carries over.
  12. Count me in. In my years, I've seen many players ride the pine, but Murton just has that special gift for it. That posture! That poise! The way he crosses his legs by the fifth inning! I can't wait to see him in action!
  13. In the majors, you've got Zambrano, Prior, Garland, Willis, Hinske, etc.
  14. They key to this is the closer we get to the deadline, the more value all of these guys will have. I agree with your assessment. ??????????? N.M.H. fan ????????????????
  15. Here's what I don't get about the obsession with the number of pitches a player sees per AB. Nomar has been one of the best hitters in the league over his career, and yet swings at everything, if Neifi Perez takes 2 pitches before he makes his out it's still an out. Fact is he just can't hit, so does it matter if he grounds out on pitch 1 or 8? I'm not convinced it does. I do however think that several players swing at a bunch of bad pitches and they are not good enough hitters to make up for poor pitch selection. If a hitter sees 8 pitches in an AB, thats about 1/12 of a normal pitch count. If 12 guys see 8 pitches, even if NONE of them get on base, the starter will have 96 pitches by the end of the fourth inning. I'm also pretty sure it's easier to hit a pitcher when he is fatigued, and worried about walking guys. There are other advantages in long AB's, such as seeing a pitchers entire repertoire so he can't suprise you in the fifth inning, giving your pitcher more time to rest, etc. Nomar is one the modern era's best hitters, so he has gotten by prettu well with his approach. If you notice, though, he has thrived in a lineup that has always had other hitters who work the count.
  16. That AB by Hairston was the best of the game by a cub. It perfectly illustrates why we will never be a great team under Dusty. AB's like that (even when they end in an out) are productive for SO MANY reasons, NONE of which Baker endorses. Occasionally our first-pitch approach will be successful, but never consistently. Any pitcher (Davies, Colon, Eischen, Ramirez) can easily take advantage of it. This is maddening.
  17. Give that man a cigar! Well, to be fair, we weren't going to score 4 runs anyway.
  18. Watch us score eight runs. I just can't root for Neifi and Macias. I can't. We know what kind of players they are. If they go 10-10, it will hurt our team in the long run. This is tearing me up inside.
  19. In my mind this deal further compounds the problem we have. Soriano is Corey with higher slugging%, and without the value of defense at a premium position. (and 4 years older) Delluci IS an upgrade over Hollandsworth, career year or not. (He would still need to be in a platoon, as he is atrocious vs. lefties.) Unfortunately the deal also weakens the pen, which is the deciding factor in my mind. The best thing about this trade is Hairston gets in the lineup, which we shouldn't have to make a deal to achieve.
