    A) I don't think I've seen anyone use "dumpster" in a derogatory way since 2004, which is well before the ban on such names. B) there should be a double standard in a community this small between long time posters and newbies. The mods here know the people with thousands of posts. They know their general intentions and know if they can be trusted to reign it in if they're instructed to do so. There is a VERY GOOD REASON THIS IS DIFFERENT FROM THE LAW. We have the sort of legal system ENTIRELY because we live in a society where most people do not know most other people they may run into. It's simply not a good idea to apply to this sort of community because the judges actually know everyone involved in the incidents they moderate. shouldn't the long time posters set the example?? if someone w/ 10000 posts is constantly flaming, someone w/ 100 posts probably thinks it's ok to act up as well. Maybe I missed something-was something said that was uncalled for, or are people just bickering over how optimistic/pessimistic to be?

    That exact scenario has reared it's head several times, though. Cedeno and Fontenot are here, yet we've resigned Perez. Hill, Mitre and Williams are here, yet we brought back Rusch. It a bad, bad pattern.

    When Hendry targets a guy, he goes all out for him. That's about all I can say. I wish he'd make better decisions regarding his resources. I wish he'd target different guys. It's done with now, though. None of us here can possibly change the fact that we signed 3 guys that, when added together, took up between 25 and 30% of our available budget for this winter, and of the 3 only Eyre is an upgrade, and it's not a upgrade equal to how much we're paying him. The only thing left to do is hope that Hendry has a rabbit up his sleeve. I think we might end up with Furcal, and then it's on Hendry to swing a trade for a RF. An IMPACT RF.

    Exactly. Which points to Hendry wanting to trade surplus pitching, but it's not as if that group of relievers could fetch us a ton in return.

    Farnsworth and Eyre, as pointed out by Hoops, have an identical every-other-year thing going on. And I'm not crazy throwing more than $2m on relievers. hey are way too erratic, as Vance pointed ou. This move would have been really great had we not resigned Rusch. We now theoretically have 4 LHP that could be in the bullpen. Hill might be traded, but what about Ohman? It's not as if LOOGY's have a ton of trade value. Rusch probably won't start, unless we trade Williams (which we shouldn't), but Rusch's best chance at providing value is starting. Then there's Eyre. Is he a primary setup guy like Remmy was supposed to be in 2003. I hope Hendry has a clearer plan than I can see thus far. It looks muddled to me.

    Are you implying my post was a knee jerk reaction? Because it's not. Raw put it perfectly-taken on it's own, Eyre on the Cubs isn't bad. Put in the context of the rest of the moves thus far, and it's been very dissapointing thus far. I qualified my post to the point I feel confident in it, OCF.

    3 years, $11 million dollars for Scott Eyre?? So we've officially wasted almost $9m and have not improved the team one bit. I don't buy that Eyre is that much better than what we have. Hendry is really showing his colors this offseason so far. He really, really needs to turn this around in a hurry.

    The problem is that his current contract can be voided after this season if he chooses to :( I never liked that clause, but it's hard to believe that Hendry wouldn't re-up him.

    I really, really think that Macias' defensive debacle in CF last season might push Hendry to replace him with Hairston on the roster. If Hendry is serious about his defensive focus, and his "catch the ball" stuff, there's no way Macias can be seen as "versitaile".

    I don't think it's Neifi's trainer, but the Cubs have definetly sent a trainer to work with both Aramis and Zambrano this winter. They're supposedly focising on stretching and flexibility with Aramis, and diet and hydration with Zambrano. I've said it before, but I fully expect Aramis to win an MVP award before his current contract expires. I think he's going to have a giant year. When he went down, he led the team in RBI's and HR's, and this was after a brutal April and May.

    I disagree. Considering we're paying Neifi the exact same amount of money, Hairston brings a lot more to the table. First, he can backup CF. Next, he actually has speed. Third, he'll take a walk. The only thing Hairston can't do that Neifi can is play SS. I'd rather keep Hairston at $2.5m than Macias for a similar role at around $1.5m. At least we're getting a signifigant upgrade for our dollar.

    Levine was on ESPN 1000 today saying that he never said this. He said the Marlins and Cubs haven't talked for at least 3 days. No trade is imminent. See, if you try and scoop something and end up wrong, just say"it's further away than I thought". Don't play some idiot 1984 game like no tapes exist anywhere of him saying it was imminent. At least he talked about it today. Last time he said a trade was imminent and then just didn't say anything else about it ever. Trade never happened of course. Oh, I remember that. I was the unfortunate soul who heard it first and started that thread. He owes me a pepsi for that.

    Am I alone in thinking Rothschild is one of the last people on earth who should be pissing and moaning about Wood and injuries? Maybe if he asserted himself to Dusty, Woody wouldn't have to throw 150 pitches during games in May, and thus raising the already high odds on Wood getting hurt exponentially. Maybe Chad Fox's elbow doesn't explode, because he's not pitching his 3rd game in a row (a blowout at that). Maybe we actually use guys regularly and not drive guys like Farnsworth and Wuertz into the ground. I think Rothschild should show that kind of assertive attitude inside the dugout in June, not to a newspaper in November.

    Have you seen the numbers Huff put up last year? I don't want Huff near this team. Bad numbers last year, he's not that good defensively, and there are rumors of him being a really, really bad clubhouse guy. I'd almost rather have Jones or Encarnacion that Huff. Can you quantify that with specifics? I've never heard anything about Huff being a clubhouse problem. Hoops would be a better resource on this. I've just read rumblings here and there, but he might be able to quantify it better than I can. Even if he were St. Aubrey, I still wouldn't want him on the team. He's not really a RF. He would have been nice to have last season given how bad we were out in the OF, but this offseason there are much better options available than Huff.

    Who was the ump that hosed Kerry in the 9th inning against the Reds in 2004? IIRC that was the game that Kerry got tossed after he'd been pulled because whoever was umping at home decided that curveballs weren't strikes anymore.

    Patterson and Aardsma would be a very fair deal. Aardsma sure doesn't look like a prospect anymore.

    Pierre isn't very good. I'll take him for a couple of Rule 5 guys that wouldn't make the 40 man if Hendry can swing that. Depending on the price I'd be pretty okay with it. It keeps Dusty from EVER batting Neifi leadoff, it doesn't necessarily preclude us from signing Furcal if we want to, but it gives us leverage. He's a FA after this year, and will probably be a A type FA, so we get a draft pick if/when he walks, and he will be an improvment over the tripe we had at the top last year. Having said all that, it all swings on the player cost to aquire. If it's reasonable, then it's a good move. If we give up a Pie, Hill, Pinto or Masrhall, it's not.

    That is a part that scares me....the prospect. There's no way it could possibly be better than like Leicester or someone like that.
