  1. I think that Pierre makes them at least average, but I'm not sure if it makes them a lock to be above average. No matter what, this season comes down to pitching. If they have good starting pitching, they can get away with having a league average offense. If they have injuries and erratic performance from Wood and Prior, respectively, and Maddux continues to stagnate, we will finish .500 unless EVERYONE on the offense has a career year. My personal preference would have been to make sure your offense is a lock to be top 5 in the NL, and that way you can offset the inevtiable injuries/ineffectiveness of at least one of your starters. But that's not how it worked out, so we'll see what happens.
  2. If you're looking for a guy who some NL Central team doesn't play despite having obvious value, I would think that Murton, Valentin, Sanchez, and Ryan Freel come immediately to mind.
  3. I'm pretty sure it was around the same time that it was discovered that Todd Walker can't turn DP's, and that Grudz was a striped bass.
  4. wait a sec, here...are these the same boston fans who booed him while he was a yankee and held up "(B)etrayal" signs when he came back to fenway as a blue jay? i don't know if i buy that, dude. I was going to point this out. This is the same Roger Clemens that gained 30 pounds and showed up out of shape for his contract year, underperformed, and then magically got himself in better shape once he got a big paycheck in Toronto. That ticked the entire Boston fanbase off. I doubt anyone but the most cerebral Sox fan would want him there.
  5. They've lacked depth for several years now, I doubt they make it past the round of 16 once they lose the officiating edge they seem to enjoy in the regular season. And UNC ties it up. Part of the reason they lack depth is because they've lost a bunch of players to early entry, but you can't tell me thee's not some junior that can run that offense better that the kid who looks scared to death running it now. When was their last early entry? Deng and Jay Williams(who only skipped his senior year IIRC) are the only that I can think of in the last 4 years. Maybe my concept of time is off, and I'm thinking of all the early entries they had from 1999-2002.

  7. That's a lot of starting pitching depth. Maybe they trade one of Arroyo/Papelbon/Lester?
  8. Whoever Duke's point guard is (Paulus?) is absolutely the worst starter for a top 3 team I've ever seen. He looks about as good as I would out there. JJ Redick is the only good player on that team. It's a miracle they've only lost once.
  9. I'm stunned that there are Bostonians that want him there after all this time, and what he "did" to them. That said, if it guarantees he's not in Houston, then I could care less.
  10. Unless Ramirez's legs fall off, he'll make 2003 Alou look like 2005 Neifi. And I'm dead serious.
  11. maybe Tim needed a good laugh
  12. Could you live with Pierre if Pie is traded for a good RF bat? How good? Let's say on the level of Abreu/Dunn

  14. As opposed to the other games, where he'll be awesome? :P Sorry, that was just a hanging curveball there...but it's a good point. That's a lot of division pitchers that he has a great shot at struggling against.
  15. They ought to chain him to his bunk in Mesa, or, failing that, have the Cubs put on Venezuelan uniforms and just tell him they're playing in the WBC.
  16. 2006 Cubs in Contract Years: Lee Maddux Wood Ramirez (Can opt out after 2006) Pierre Walker Baker Nice to see 4 of our most important players there. :P But seriously, I could very easily see Wood turning in a year similar to 2003. Of that entire group, I can see him having your typical "Big Name In a Contract Year" season.
  17. it frees you of the baggage, and thusly you become a little more sane when you're rooting for your team.
  18. I'm not Vance, but Philly would be stupid not to accept Williams, Pie and Hill for Abreu. Boston's in a different spot. They don't have to deal Manny, since they can afford him, but if they can fleece a team, they'll deal him. My guess is it would take Lee, Williams, Cedeno, Hill and Harvey with the Cubs picking up at least 75% of his salary. And I wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft pole. Did I read that right? A month ago the BoSox were all anxious to deal Manny, Clement, and cash to the O's for Tejada. But now from the Cubs they'd demand Lee, Williams, Cedeno, Hill and Harvey? Was that before or after Manny "changed his mind"? Nevertheless, Tejada is valued higher than Lee would be for the Red Sox. Plus, look at what they wanted from Anaheim-their 2 best prospects, in addition to 2 ML ready players AND all of Manny's salary. That's pretty steep, and what I put up there is roughly comparable, given that Lee has only had one great season over the course of his career.
  19. If you want to guarantee a further delay in winning a title, putting Stone in charge of a baseball team would be one way to do it. He was a great color commentator. He's not a good judge of talent. Look at his absolutely stupid Ramirez trade idea last summer. He'd make an awful GM. And I'll echo the sentiments of others in this thread: the Chicago Cubs don't consistently win because of poor baseball decisions. They have more than ample payroll. It's the people handing out the contracts and allocating assets who are to blame.

  21. I thought they were going to try and lock-up Pierre long term. This doesn't mean they can't. They've done this lots of times _ avoid arbitration and then sign a guy to a multiyear deal in spring training. they did it last season with Aramis, and nearly gave me a heart attack when they waited til opening day to sign him long term to that goofy contract. BTW, Bruce, has there been any indication of Aramis wanting to exercise that opt out clause?
  22. Blasphemer!!!!!!!!!!!!! sorry
  23. Funny, I think that's exactly what makes Pat and Ron a great combo. Like the night Ron was giving the pitching matchups against the Brewers and trying to figure out who the Cubs used to have that reminded him so much of Ruben Quevedo. We all knew it was Ruben himself, and Pat gently got Ron there too. Ron may not be the most informative, but he and Pat together make the broadcasts interesting. As a color analyst, he's supposed to bring more to the table than odd ramblings and incoherent/incorrect observations. If it were a 3 man booth where Pat did his thing, Ron did his, and there was an insightful color guy, it would be a lot better. My standards are higher than just bringing enthusiasm and passion. Any fan pulled out of the stands can do that.
  24. Link As Tampa edges ever closer to dealing Huff. To who? I think it'd make more sense for them to trade him in July. Financially, they'd be better off dumping him before the season starts. He's going to take up a giant chunk of their payroll, and their OF is overcrowded as it is.
