  1. 2005 NL average walk rate = .0845 2005 Aramis Ramirez walk rate = .0694 Do those numbers hold steady over the last 3 seasons? I know Aramis doesn't strike all that often....
  2. yeah, that was the problem. these guys really can't be that oblivious to walks, can they? You know the answer to that. I've heard or read very little that says the Cubs coaching staff recognizes the value of a walk. I don't think it would shock a lot of people if we characterized the Cubs current set of coaches and manager as "old school", when batting average was the stat that measured a successful hitter. However, there is plenty of evidence that Hendry recognizes the value of OBP given that he has acquired Nomar, Ramirez, Lee, Grudz/Walker/Hairston, Murton, Pierre, Miller/Barrett and promoted Dubois who all have higher OBPs than their predecessors. Jones does not, but it is clear that Jacque was not Hendry's first choice to play RF this season. Why he has stuck with Baker who is responsible for hiring his coaching staff, I don't know. I'm not sure that's exactly a great list of hitters that anyone would classify as "patient." Now, Aramis and Nomar have been good enough hitters that they make up for their lack of patience..but of his acquisitions, none has impressed me very much in this regard. Maybe Lawton. Ramirez is pretty patient.
  3. Redick will have a Steve Kerr/Paxson/John Starks type career in the league. Think about it. Chris Duhon is in a 9 man rotation. Smush Parker is a starter. There are what, 30 teams in the league? You think a team like Denver couldn't use a 3 point shooter in their 9 man rotation? Cleveland? Redick can shoot. He wore down towards the end of the season, but he'll have a nice, role player career in the league. Williams won't. He'll be a 2nd round pick at best, and he'll be out of the league within 3 years. He's just not that good. Okay, so I'm not alone. He isn't big enough or strong enough to sit in the paint and post up against NBA power forwards. His best hope is that a team like Chicago takes him in the 2nd round because he *might* be able to rebound and block shots, and play hard defense. And even then he'd barely crack the rotation. I just don't see him being anything at the next level.

  5. I don't see the Cubs going into the tank. There is too much talent to be awful, but too much has to go right for them to be great. IF Wood comes back quickly and stays on the mound all season, and IF Ramirez and Lee play well, we'll contend in the Central, since I don't see St Louis being as good. Too many questions marks to be confident, though. Too many ifs.

  7. That was just a giant choke job by Duke. LSU just beat them around, and instead of fighting back (like they did against BC) they freaked out and focused on the refs. Great game by LSU.
  8. Pathetic. Just pathetic. Duke completely lost their composure.
  9. Way to play point guard, Paulus...
  10. He's going to miss one of these...
  11. Well, i've been watching the other game up to this point so I can't say much from before 4 minutes ago, but I think his whining is keeping him from getting calls. That's a big part of it. Every time he puts the ball down on the floor, and after he's hit, he pouts. The entire Duke team is showing a total lack of composure, for that matter. Coach K has not had a good game at all.
  12. You mean after he was pushed over and elbowed himself?
  13. Redick has a legit beef, although it's a years worth of foul-karma catching up to them tonight. The refs are letting LSU do everything but arm tackle him.
  14. stupid foul by McRoberts.
  15. They imported these refs from Serie A.
  16. Whoever the guy guarding Redick is has been in his shirt-literally-all night. And Tyrus Thomas is a beast. It's a really good game
  17. Good for CBS for recognizing a more exciting game...for once.
  18. Redick is getting manhandled by LSU.
  19. No, your assesment is dead on. It was a B team out there, and while we have the depth to win CONCACAF qualifiers with that kind of squad, we'll get destroyed against anyone good if we field a team of scrubs. Zavagnin is soooo horrible, I cannot even begin to describe his sucktitude. He's like the Macias of the US national team. When you watch the game, you'll see the US actually dominating the run of play after the 10th minute to about the 46th. Then, after Germany's fluky 1st goal, we dominate some more, but can't finish, and then the wheels come off the defense completely. Convey and Johnson played okay, but everyone else was total crap, even Keller, who badly misjudged the first goal.
  20. A college of coaches featuring JC and Rawaction.
  21. Germany 4, USA 1 Bad News: We got embarrassed by a really mediocre team 4-1 Good News: We were without 8 starters (at least) and I thought controlled the first 60 minutes of the game before the patchwork defense vanished and Keller got shellacked. Good News: Eddie Johnson played pretty well. Bad News: Keller didn't. Some brutal quotes coming from Keller, too: The more I think about this game the more irritated I get that we had to field a B team in our last European tuneup before June. Gibbs, Zavagnin and Berhalter shouldn't see the field at all in June, ever. Ditto for Conrad. One more depressing (and sobering) fact:
  22. The Tribune gave Jim Hendry more than enough payroll with which to win in 2004 and 2005. We were top 5 in the NL those years. It'snot ownership's fault that terrible decision making, bad field managing and bad luck resulted in underachievement. And looking at this year's payroll, I believe we are top 5 in the NL again. A baseball team isn't as much of a public trust as you'd think. Yes, the Cubs could raise the payroll to 140m, but without better decision making it would be a waste of money, and they know this. It would be irresponsibly throwing money away.
  23. Shades of Bobby Hill in 2003.
  24. I say Wood starts by April 15th. He has the most to gain and he seems to be the most far advanced in his throwing program.
  25. Thestar.com Why is it that when pitchers on other teams shut down for 5 days they are then able to resume their normal throwing regimen but when a Cubs pitcher gets shut down like this they say he has lost arm strength and his progress gets pushed back about 2-3 weeks (e.g. - Mark Prior)? Because, unlike other MLB teams, we have Dr. Nick Riviera as our head trainer.
