  1. Both lines have been outplayed today.
  2. Truly terrible game so far. Grossman has been hurried the entire 2nd quarter, and the defense is getting lucky. Too many mistakes...
  3. Did that game eliminate LA from the playoffs? Almost. I believe they're 6 points out right now with just 3 games left. Good. Anything that could possibly wake Landon Donovan up to the fact he needs to play in Europe is fine by me.
  4. Good for Bobby Convey.
  5. Did that game eliminate LA from the playoffs?
  6. Careful or you will hear from the stats junkies who will find some statistic to downplay his offense. You're not gonig to find a ton of people here who don't think Soriano's SLG% would help us hitting 5th or 6th.
  7. Meh...you USSoccer thought the Lions would be a tough game.... If Detroit doesn't play stupid football and rack up a ton of penalties the score looks a lot different. And again, reverse jinx.
  8. Is that a mistype? You think the Vikings offense is going to score 24 on the Bears? Yea, it's definitely a typo. I went ahead and fixed it for him already. Minnesota is a tough place to play, and I have concerns about Rex on that turf. I also have concerns about the offense and the noise that the Dome can create. Also, I don't really think the defense has played a good game yet. Detroit moved the ball pretty well, but shot themselves in the foot repeatedly with penalties. Green Bay's offense is just downright awful. Plus, maybe I'm going for a reverse jinx...
  9. Amazing young talent? Is this a joke? Reggie Abercrombie? Dan Uggla (a utility infielder and career minor leaguer before his 2006 anomoly?) Willingham? Mitre? Nolasco? Come on, these guys aren't "amazing talent". Sure, you can say that about Hanley Ramirez, Miguel Cabrera, Willis, and possibly Amezaga, but not the entire team. Not even close. Nolasco is having a really, really good year. Uggla is a good 2B. Willingham has a ton of talent. You mentioned Ramirez, Cabrera, Willis, Amezaga. Josh Johnson is really really good. Anibal Sanchez. Do I really need to go on? They have a ton of talent.
  10. Just because he's a former Cub and not named Dusty Baker does not mean he's the right fit for the job. He's also a former Yankee, Cardinal and Colorado Rockies, for that matter. He's doing well with an amazing collection of young talent in a terrible National League. I'd rather look around than settle for bringing Girardi "back home".
  11. What are the differences other than Leyland? The young arms have peaked and remained healthy. The perfect storm. For their sake I hope they win it this year. They may never be in this situation again. He won in Pittsburgh, Florida and now Detroit. Amazing how those "perfect storms" keep following him around. I'm guessing the Storm lost the directions to Colorado. And ignored the All-Star teams he had in FLA and PIT.
  12. Here's a thought: Send Prior to the AFL to get sharp ahead of ST..
  13. Ok, off the top of my head: 1B: Lee $13m 2B: Soriano (signed 4/$60m) SS: Izturis $4m 3B: Ramirez (signed $4/56 w/NTC) C: Barrett $4.5m LF: Murton $500k CF: Pie $300k RF: Jones $4m P: Zambrano $10m P: Prior $4.5m P: Hill $350k P: Padilla (3y/$16m) P: Mateo $300k Bench: C: Soto $300k OF/1B: Craig Wilson (1/$3.5m option for 2008) OF: Pagan $350k IF: Cedeno $350k IF: Theriot $300k Bullpen: SU-Howry $4m SU- Eyre $3.5m MR-Wuertz $500k MR-Ohman $1m CL-Wood (1yr $4m base w/ incentives and club option for 2008) LR-Dempster $5m Additions: Soriano, Wilson, Padilla That's a 98.2m payroll.
  14. I think Dusty picks and chooses his perspectives. Usually it's the inverse of logical. In this case, within the context of this game, I suppose he did get hot at the right moment to hit 2 HR's.
  15. I've always wanted to say this. Can I borrow your time machine? Are you implying that Maddux is still a consistent pitcher? He has a 4.22 ERA this year, and is the type of pitcher that can keep you in the game, would be great around all of our rookies, and I beleive he still has the stuff to be a good #5. But as I said I would not offer him a whole lot. A 4.22 ERA isn't good. He took the Cubs out of games just as much as he kept them in them, and if he's such a good influence on our young pitchers then hire him to be a pitching coach or a bench coach. He's not worth committing a rotation spot to what should be a retooling team next season.
  16. Landon Donovan has so much talent, and he's wasting it in MLS, and hurting the USMNT in the process. ESPN the Mag had a more in depth article about Donovan prior to the World Cup. I can't say that I blame him if he is much happier playing here. Would you leave your friends and family for a better job overseas in a crummier place? It sucks that he won't be the player he can be because of it, but I can't begrudge him for placing his quality of life over the advancement of his career. I will blame him for his repeated comments that he doesn't need to go to Europe to reach the top level of his talent. He may have left for Leverkusen too soon in his life, and experiences like that can definetly affect you, but it does show something about his mentality that he can only be comfortable in a pressure free, comfortable enviroment. He's definetly not the player who should be wearing a captain's armband for the USMNT, and he also shouldn't be counted on at the international level outside of CONCACAF. He will never be better than he is right now, and right now he's a 3rd or 4th option on a good team.
  17. An excellent article breaking down why Sven Goran Eriksson is not the right fit for the USMNT job: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=380097&root=us&cc=5901
  18. This article ought to make Dave really, really happy: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=380216&cc=5901 Some highlights: Landon Donovan has so much talent, and he's wasting it in MLS, and hurting the USMNT in the process.
  19. When I played I was always told to be no more than one half-step ahead of the last defender, but just like in baseball, officials can get calls wrong. Think of a linesman's offsides calls like an umpire's strike zone. As a game goes on a good player will figure out how a line crew is calling offsides, and adjust his runs accordingly. The thing about soccer is that while it has it's share of 0-0/1-0 affairs, it can also be a high scoring affair. Look at the Man U/Celtic game. 3-2 with end to end action. I think the problem for American soccer fans is the pace of most games they see. USMNT and MLS games tend to be pretty plodding and methodical. WC2006 didn't help that any, as there wer far too many games in the knockout stages ending 1-0 or going to PK's. EPL games tend to be a little more end to end. As time goes on and the American game gets stronger, you'll see more scoring and more action as opposed to the dull, tactical stuff that people associate with the game.

  22. Elaborate, or don't post at all. Do I really need to elaborate? I do know that I don't need to be told if or when to post. You want elaboration? Maddux will be an overpaid average to below average starting pitcher. He's a nostalgia act. It would be a terrible move to bring him back when you can get the same or better production out of a league minimum rookie. Which of our rookies would give us what maddux would? Which one has a proven history of going over 200 innings? None. I'm not advocating giving him a ludicrous contract. At Maddux' age he might understand he should expect less. I'd offer him a low contract and see if he bites. If not, no big deal. Who cares if he can go over 200 innings? It's worthless unless you can consistently put your team in a position to win, which Maddux can no longer do! Between Marmol, Guzman and Mateo (not even factoring in guys still in the minors like Gallagher, Veal, etc) you can get 200 IP from your 5th starter, but what matters is the production. If you just want a guy who will save the bullpen and "eat innings", then we should sign the unremarkable and mediocre Steve Trachsel.
