  1. Judging his managing skills on just one year of managing with the Marlins isn't that great an idea either. You're probably not going to get a complete picture. It's better than basing your call on the fact that he went to NU 20 years ago, and was a pretty below average Cub for 7 seasons. If you're hiring him to be a bench coach, whatever. If he's your manager, you judge him on his management experience, no matter how short it may be.
  2. What/who do you want then? Just curious... My first choice would be Larry Dierker, if he wanted it. Next I'd look at Davey Johnson. Freidi Gonzalez would have been a very good choice by all accounts. If I were told that Hendry was going to pick from Girardi or Piniella, I'd take Girardi, but only because he's the lesser of two evils. I don't think he's the Next Big Thing like the Chicago media is making him out to be.
  3. Girardi should be judged on his skills as a manager, not on where he happened to play and go to college. That kind of stuff is a meaningless strawman used to appease an uninformed fanbase. From what I can tell, he's an old school, move runners along, play your gut kind of manager, which I'd rather not see.
  4. You didn't. A lot of others have, which is what I think he's referring to. Correct, not directed at you JW.
  5. how has ramirez's lack of hustle ACTUALLY hurt this team? This year, did not make a differance at all. However I do recall a game in which had he hustled out of the box he could have gotten a stand-up double. Instead he was thrown out at 2nd. That being said, I'm sure that all MLB players have "those days" during the season, but it seems Aram had them quite often. Don't take that the wrong way, I'm a huge Aramis fan and want the Cubs to do what it takes to keep him. It was just an example. The Cubs need to play good hard baseball. Hard meaning "You get paid a lot of money, and it won't kill you to run full out to first base 4 times a game." He didn't have them as often as people percieve. The hustle thing is one of my biggest pet peeves about Chicago sports. Only in Chicago would people be clamoring to get rid of a .300/35/110 a year player because of a couple jogged out ground balls.
  6. how has ramirez's lack of hustle ACTUALLY hurt this team? I don't know, but some radio host during yesterday's press conference was all excited about the idea of letting Ramirez walk away. Morons. I hope those same idiots enjoy 5th place, because Ramirez walking will be a disaster.
  7. Nope. I could care less. His bit grows old.
  8. Over/Under on the number of "Bad Luck/Wood & Prior" questions?
  9. If that happens, Gary Hughes would be the GM for the next year at least. Does anyone here really want that to happen? Well, then all the Gary Hughes apologists would finally shut up about how much of a great baseball guy he is and how much he deserves a GM job. At the expense of a lost season? I'd rather listen to the apologists. It could be a lost season either way. I'm not saying I want Hughes, not by any stretch. But if Dusty, Jim and Andy are all gone, I'm not convinced they will go with all in house hires anyway. I'm just thinking that they promoted McDonough from within for 1 year. If they dumped Hendry, they'd likely promote from within if only to prevent a hiring process that would hold up the ARam negotiations as well as the FA period planning. If they go internal, it's going to be Hughes.

  12. What is wrong with Prior again that he's not going to be ready by ST?
  13. You're gonna have a hard time coming up with your reverse jinx for this next week... :D I'm waaay ahead of you. Let's just say it will involve the Curse of Dick Jauron...
  14. Yes and yes, they did have dinner together. I don't see Stone becoming the GM. I've been wrong before. I would like to see bridges mended between Stone & the Cubs, which should be easier if Dusty is no longer in the picture. There have been a lot of rumors about whether Ron Santo will continue on as a full-time radio broadcaster --- specifically, how much longer he'll do the road games, since he did miss a couple of road series this season. I like Santo in the booth and hope he continues on. If he chooses to cut back his schedule for health reasons, I'd prefer Stone in the booth as a PT replacement over Otto. Oh God No....
  15. If it took three pitchers to get Pierre, I don't even want to think what they would want for Cabrera. Prior, Hill, Pie and Cedeno? If that is all it would take I'd do it. I think it would take much more than that. Prior will make about as much as Cabrera next year, so I doubt they'd want him in any deal. I would guess they'd want Hill, Pie, Patterson and Veal.
  16. Not sure if you did that intentionally, but Hasselhoff is awesome. And I'm not going to complain about a late night game since I actually get to watch it! :) I couldn't remember how to spell his name, so I gave him the first nickname I could think of.
  17. They had a shutout and the D has allowed 16 points in 3 games. What are your expectations? GAMEDAY!!! Final prediction time. BEARS 23 - HAWKS 13 Rex 22-36, 250, 2TD/1 INT TJ - 18 - 79 yds Ced - 7 - 38 yds They tackled very, very poorly against Detroit and Minnesota. You can't get away with that against better teams.
  18. I'm thinking 27-17 Seahawks. Bears defense still hasn't played a great game, and the Bears RB's still haven't played a great game. Alexander being out is probably a positive, since a 100% Morris is probably better than a 75% Alexander. I think Hasselhoff picks the Bears secondary apart, and his line gives him just enough time to do so. No Des Clark will mean trouble for Grossman against a pretty decent defense. reverse jinx
  19. While I agree that Hendry should do everything in his power to retain Aramis I have to object with this statement. Cabrera is back to playing 3B for the Marlins this season, and he's far and away the best bat at the hot corner. (A position that's extremely well stacked in the NL right now; Cabrera, Ramirez, Wright, Rolen, Zimmerman, Atkins, etc.) Is Cabrera back playing 3B? Even with him in the mix Aramis stacks up very favorably. Miggy may be the better player in the long run, but right now Aramis is every bit as good. May I please share in your supply of wacky weed? If I were picking a 3B for tomorrow's game, my list would look like this: Cabrera Wright Ramirez Atkins But I'd be tempted to pick Atkins third. Realistically, those three could be put in any order depending on your overall preferences on offense. But Cabrera is well above the other three. I stand corrected, after looking at Cabrera's numbers this season. I hadn't looked at them in awhile.

  21. In order: New Manager Minor Trade Wood Resigned Aramis Extended Major Free Agent Not listed: Major trade. MY preferred order? Aramis Extended New Manager Major Trade Major Free Agent Wood Extended Minor Trade
  22. Just because the money's available doesn't mean we'd be able to outbid anyone for either. I have severe doubts about Zito and Schmidt being anything other than overpaid, fairly good pitchers (Schmidt especially). None of their numbers jump out at me and scream #1 starter. They just happen to be the biggest names on the market this winter. I happen to think Prior becomes himself again next season. I think Hill can be just as effective as Zito for about a tenth of the cost. I think Padilla is every bit as good as Schmidt, and will be about half of his cost. Z is Z, and we have plenty of capable 5th starter candidates. Also, if you disagree with my opinion on Zito/Schmidt, why not balance the roster by keeping Aramis and only sign one of Zito/Schmidt? Wouldn't your team be better off having a balance between pitching and offense? Pitching isn't so much more important as to let your best offensive player go to sign 2 guys that aren't in the top 25 at their position.
  23. Sully, that's a really bad idea. Realize that Aramis is the best offensive 3B in the NL right now. You don't just let him go and let Scott Moore try and replace him. Additionally, the chances of signing both Zito and Schmidt are next to zero. That's a last place lineup in support of a merly above average pitching staff. Aramis is easily worth as much as Hendry gave Lee, if not more by virtue of his age. The safest avenue to go would be to sign Aramis before he opts out, sign Soriano, play Pie in CF, resign Wade Miller and sign Vicente Padilla. Lee Soriano Izturis Ramirez Murton Pie Jones Barrett Zambrano Padilla Prior Hill Mateo/Marshall/Miller/Guzman/Insert arm here. It costs about the same as your roster, but it's much, much more balanced. Instead of an anemic offense and an above average, very expensive pitching staff, you have a fairly potent offense (albeit short on OBP) with an above average pitching staff.
  24. I suppose the rest of the NL Central wants him back
