  1. Just wait until ARam walks... And Rothschild is brought back... And Neifi is resigned for the bench in December...
  2. Just wait until ARam walks...
  3. I'm trying to un-hijack it!
  4. Someone gild this and send it to every member of the BBWA.
  5. That's such a myth. MLS has it's share of high scoring games. Plus, would you rather have a well played 2-1 game or a sloppy 4-3 affair? It's all in the skill on the field. A discussion in how MLS can improve the quality of the product will center around league revenue and player development, and it will take generations before MLS can field teams on a technical level with the Euro leagues. Not to hijack the hockey thread, but MLS just needs to continue to grow slowly. The surest way to kill the league would be to act like the NASL and allow teams to sign players to idiotic contracts and make silly rule changes. Even if soccer never becomes more that summer's version of the NHL, I can live with that. The key is to avoid overreaching and not trying to expand too quickly.
  6. That article was cold as ice... Too willing to sacrifice? That reference was funny on several different levels...

  8. I think the 'Hawks need good PR AND winning. The Wirtz ownership has really destroyed a lot of that fanbase. They need to take steps to earn forgiveness, so to speak. Put the home games on TV. Drop your ticket prices. Have half price nights or whatever. Winning will help you get the bandwagon fans back, but how many of the hardcore fans wwere driven away by poor ownership, and not just poor play?
  9. Oh don't get me started. Do I need to bust out the attendance figures again? :P Do I need to bust out the "hey let's give 5000 tickets away because nobody wants to pay to see us" argument? Who did that? I recently saw an article about how many tickets the fire give away to get bodies in the stadium. Don't recall where though. And I'm not really sure what the number was. I believe it, now that I think about it. It's not a bad idea though. It gets people out there to the park to see for themselves the product. I was curious myself to see how I'd react to watching an MLS game for the first time live, and I was really pleasantly suprised. Toyota Park is just an outstanding facility, and the game itself plays better live than on TV. I'd go again in a heartbeat, and I'm sad to say I wasn't sure I would feel this way before going, just because MLS isn't as technically advanced as the European or international game.. The Hawks should try this. Hockey is supposedly the best sport to see live. Maybe getting some different people in the seats for free gets them hooked, especially if the team continues to show improvement.
  10. It would help to be able to outspend your mistakes. Except with Hendry, his mistakes come from poor budget mangement.
  11. I'm only giving Goony a hard time. All things being equal, the Fire (and MLS) have a long way to go I think it would be a great thing if the 'Hawks rebounded to their former success. The fact that an original 6 team drwas 8,000 people is just sad.

  14. As soon as they start outdrawing the Fire we'll talk :D
  15. Chien-Ming Wang was a cheap homegrown pitcher, not to mention, their best pitcher. Wang had a very good season, but wasn't Mussina statistically better? Maybe he was, I was just making a point that having 1 or 2 cheap homegrown pitchers wouldn't make us different from the Yankees. And the Yankees problem was they spent huge money on old guys that don't have it anymore. Yeah, it looks like Mussina was a little better this year. Yeah, I was nitpicking a little, but I agree with the point that developing some cheap players to contribute doesn't make us the anti-Yankees.

  17. They've always wanted to win, and they've already opened the wallets. The problem is Hendry's ability to use money to acquire quality players. Exactly. Hendry wastes about $10-15m in budget per season on players whose roles could be filled for far less. He's spent his budget poorly.
  18. Bruce, do you have any info on the figures Paul Kinzer exchanged with Hendry regarding Ramirez?
  19. I don't. Especially Caberrea. Both would fetch a lot of talent in return and both are going to get big raises soon. I guess it depends how far away Marlins management thinks they are from contention. If they think they can contend for a playoff spot, why deal them?
  20. The only teams that make sense to be involved would be Anaheim, LA Dodgers, Cubs, Houston, Philly, and the White Sox. Of thosee teams, I'd probably put them in this order of probablility: White Sox (Crede and Garcia) Anaheim (prospects) Cubs (Prior, Eyre and Pie) Dodgers Houston Philly I severely doubt Florida trade Willis and Cabrera in the same trade. It makes more sense to break them up and deal them seperately. In fact, I doubt either are traded at all this offseason.
  21. I wonder what Aramis thinks of Sweet Lou? I doubt he cares. Aramis isn't some Manny-like lazy oaf. Huh? I was referring to his comments about waiting to see who the new Cubs manager is before deciding that he wants to come back next year. Did he actually say that, or was that a third party, "a friend" said that? And I apologize, but usually when people ask what Aramis would think of Piniella, it's usually a reference to ARam's (undeserved) lazy rep.

  23. If he's their guy, I only hope that Hendry will have the financial leeway to resign Ramirez, and be able to upgrade via FA or trades. He'll need a pretty tamper-proof lineup, because if you give him garbage with Neifi-types on the bench, we're in for more of the same, just with more yelling.
  24. In a stufy of contrast, Eddie Johnson was suspended for the rest of the season by the Kansas City Wizards: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=384649&cc=5901 So you have Johnson, who's transfer to Benfica was blocked by MLS, sulking, turning into a head case and careening towards to Clint Mathis career arc, and you have Clint Dempsey, who's responded to his transfer to Europe being blocked by scoring in a bunch of goals for surging New England. What a waste of Johnson's talent.
