    I think Hendry took Z for granted and assumed he could easily sign Z to a team friendly deal. He underestimated the effect of the ridiculous overpayment of mediocre crap this offseason on Z. Z sees Jason Marquis get $21m and Ted Lilly get $40m, and Barry Zito get like $10billion, and justifiably asks for market value. Z should have been extended before Marquis was signed. What I don't like about Z is he went public with this. Why not see what he could have done behind closed doors before opening up his moth and threatening this team? It puts Hendry on the negotiative defensive. That's right. I can make up words now.

    But Zambrano hasn't won many more games than Marquis over the past 3 years, so obviously he doesn't deserve much more money. Also, Jason Marquis is a winner he's played for the Braves and Cardinals and won a ring and blah blah blah.

    Agreed. Ditto with Hughes and the NYY. You'd probably have to move Jones and either Eyre or Dempster, and that assuming that it's the 2007 and 2008 budgets that are the problem. I would think it's the 2009 and beyond budgets where it gets dicey, what with the Soriano, Marquis and Lilly deals being backloaded.

    I kind of like this move. We have plenty of blah pitching prospects. He was behind Guzman, Marshall, Marmol, and soon Veal and Gallagher. We grabbed a couple of long term maybe types for a guy who wasn't going to really contribute.

    Because the Angels won't deal their top guys, or because you think Hendry will go after the toolsiest prospects in their system?

    It bears repeating that a healthy Mark Prior would really change the dynamic with this situation. For that matter, a healthy and effective Angel Guzman would, too.

    The trouble with waiting is that the Cubs are unlikely to be out of it come July. It will be impossible from a PR perspective to deal Z in July if you're within 4 games of 1st. You deal him now, you can weather the storm of criticism if you end up contending. Call Bill Stoneman. Ask for Weaver, Kendrick and Adenhart. Call the Yankees and ask for Hughes, Sanchez + Tabata. Let them know the Angels are considering the other package. I don't think either team would bite, but if I didn't get the packages I'd simply hang on to Z and take my chances. It's on Hendry to create a market. If you can get either package, I'd pull the trigger today. Even considering how good Z is the team could still contend this year if they landed one of those two packages.

    I don't think panic about losing your best pitcher in over a decade is over-reaction, especially seeing as this demand is coming after some really questionable spending has been made. Had this demand come in November, he'd be locked up by now. But with the stupid contracts given to Lilly, Marquis, DeRosa, etc with almost no thought about locking up Z long term I think this is a perfect time to panic. you really think that no thought was given to locking up Z? Really? honestly? I think there's an excellent chance Hendry assumed Z would take a discount like Ramirez took, not factoring in the fact that he wildly overpaid Lilly and Marquis, and Z was sure to notice this.

    I'd settle for Weaver and Aybar, with maybe one lower level guy as well.

    How does Hendry not screw this up? Either he trades Z and endures the backlash or pays near FA market value for a guy with legit injury concerns. The backlash would be short lived if he dealt him for a package like Weaver and Aybar.

    Here is where a healthy Mark Prior could help the Cubs, leverage wise. If I were Hendry, I'd see what he's worth right now. If the Angels offer a package including Weaver, I'd deal him. If we're getting offers of prospects that aren't ML ready and/or don't include a pitcher, I'd offer him a 3 year $54m deal with zero NTC's. If he doesn't accept, I play the season out. If we're in the race, keep him. If we suck, he'll be worth a damn fortune at the deadline. Deal him. If we're muddling about in a mediocre division, and Prior is healthy and Gooz is ripping up AAA, I'd deal him. I love Z, but this is going to be Hendry's tipping point as GM. If he plays this right we'll be in good shape. If he screws this up we're in deep trouble.

    Exactly. There's no risk of him driving the ball, so why waste pitches? Additionally, he'll chase the wasted pitches and drive those into the ground.

    If he became available, nothing we could offer would be able to compete with the kinds of packages that Arizona and Anaheim could offer, just to name two teams with really good systems. We don't have the firepower. Even quantity for quality wouldn't work. We don't have enough.

    That's where you're wrong, though. He is horrible. He has one skill. He's fast. His one skill doesn't provide him much benefit, though. He can't get on base enough to use it to steal bases, and he's not fast enough or skilled enough at stealing bases to have a SB% above 80%. He isn't a good defensive CF; his speed doesn't help him track down as many balls in the gap as it should, and that's not even factoring in his arm, which has all the strength of an 11 year old girl. He doesn't take walks, has no power at all, and excels at making outs-more outs than anyone in the league by a wide margin. He's a bad, bad baseball player. You could make a good argument that Cesar Izturis is the superior player based on his defense alone.

    The affection for players like Augie Ojeda is why people think Cubs fans are stupid. Ojeda never had any business on a MLB field.

    There are typically 3 results to a Juan Pierre at bat. Ground out to the 2b, ground out to the SS. Ball gets past one of the SS or the 2b. Ok I understand your logic now, but thats your opinion and not statistical evidence. also with your logic the 7 times out of 10 part, umm.... he would be batting .300 hundred which last time I checked was a decent avg. rchap24, Did you post here under a different name? Your name and writing style is very similar to someone else...
