That's an unfair comparison. Jozy played on an absolute garbage Hull team and got no service. Carroll was made the focal point of that Newcastle side. Longer term, Jozy has more tools to be more of an impact striker. Whether he does or not is entirely up to him.

Jozy. He's far more athletic than Carrol, far better with the ball at his feet and younger.

Nice PKs, Young/Cole. Just horrible. Italy were miles better on the day, though. Full credit to England's defense, but Jesus. What is with that country and PKs?

I'm just not impressed with Spain, especially when they play their 7 midfielder formation. There's a total lack of pace, and their defense isn't very good. There's a reason Del Bosque feels the need to keep Alonso and Biscuits in there at all times shielding them. France played in awe of them; they should have gone at them toe to toe instead of being intimidated by the Art Project. The first team that has the balls to attack them will beat them.

Holy god, this England team is a disgrace. They didn't deserve that win at all. They have a Germany 2002 vibe about them. No more bitching about Lampard's "goal" again, ever.

Reading the Guardian's minute-by-minute of these games has been a blast, as well. They absolutely skewer Spain and the indulgent 7909 passes completed per game with no real shooting thing.

Let's be fair, Ireland hasn't played 3 yet. Let's be real; Ireland may as well be named Panama playing in this tournament. They won't sniff the goal against Italy. And don't get me wrong, I'll be very much pulling for the old country to bounce Italy. I just don't see it happening. CR7 could have scored 8 goals, the Dutch defense was just awful, awful, awful.

Still glad they came. If this doesn't make you happy and a little bit jealous, you're a bad person: The Irish should get an automatic invite to every tournament just to have their fans around. Although that would strip away everything that's meaningful and beautiful from the sight and sound of thousands of proud Irish, singing together in full voice, to thank their team for the pride, their sweat and their determination in the face of an insurmountable talent deficit. Absolutely. And to think two years ago that gloriousness would have been drowned out by those damned horns. This tournament has been great.

Ireland...so, so bad. The gulf in talent between ROI and everyone else in that tournament was immense.

I never thought I'd see Ronaldo looking like Josh Wolff in front of goal, but there you go. Holland are done. Sneijder was the only one who played with urgency. van Persie looks suddenly inept in front of goal.

This game is a whatever. I watched Clint get punched basically in the balls for an entire 2nd half, no call. But guess who scored when he got his chance? That's [expletive] right, haters. I watched Donovan refuse to take on defenders, yet again. You don't have the passion anymore? Quit the national team, bitch. Stop wasting your god-given talent. Whatever, though. We;re top of the group, and a home and home with [expletive] Jamaica is next. If we can't beat them both legs we don't deserve [expletive].

Is that legal? Is Klinsy promoting piracy? Nice, JK. Nice. I'm thinking tomorrow goes far better than one might think. I know quallies away are always a pain, but we're better than they are, in every position.

When strikers lose it, it rarely comes back. Torres' confidence has to be absolutely shot, since he should have had a hat trick in 20 minutes. Spain, in general, wasn't that good. Maybe they should play with a forward or a winger instead of 6 CMs. Ireland are terrible. They're going to get thrashed by Italy and Spain if they play like that again.

Busquets is the most loathsome player on the field. That's saying something.

I can't stand either team. There isn't all that much redeeming about Spain, either. Casillas, I guess. That's about it.
