  1. Thanks UK, i agree i would rather have a henderson or raines for that reason. They brought both to the table. Im hoping we get enough OBP from Juan to make his speed a big factor. Thanks Coach L
  2. Speed is a factor in every sport , baseball included. If pitchers did not care , there would be no pickoff moves or pitchouts, which tilt the count to the batter. A man on second because of a steal is added slugging %, just as a thrown out diminishes on base. I dont give a crap , how he gets on as long as he gets on base and scores. I know he is not Ricky Henderson or Tim Raines , but i think he can carry numerical value for both the large sample size of a season and obviously carry some critical small sample size games for the cubs . ( steal in the 9th). Its an interesting argument . I have always wondered how much scouts still factor in speed , when evaluating players. Thanks Coach L
  3. Goony i agree with you in one sense production is production. But you do have to take in to consideration two things. Defensive spectrum . it is more difficult to find super ops players at the most critical positions in the spectrum ss-cf-c. and leadoff speed is a factor . You have to get on base to use it . But in both small samples sizes like a series you need to win against a pitcher who does not give up much, or a season it has its worth. I know whats driving your cart Goony , the totallity of our of is not ops strong. I cant argue with you on that . I hope its enough . Thanks Coach L
  4. Goony, im not sure if Dusty was getting after this but. Culturally baseball has gone from a sport with more african americans to one that has taken a back seat to football and basketball. Im sure as a black man who has been a player and a coach. His perspective on those athletes is fresh and in the front of his mind. As a high school track and football coach , im breaking sterotypes for white speed athletes all the time. But i think many people percieve baseball as becoming highly latinized and more of a rich guys sport in the u.s. Because of year round club type play. How that factors into how many guys they draft that can run the 60 in what ever , i would love to study. Sorry for the ramble Goony. You just triggerd some thoughts i was curious about. Thanks Coach L.
  5. I think as long as specs are utilized in terms of the mean statistically of an era, it is somewhat sound evaluating players of different eras against one another. That is obviously Bill James premise on his top 100 at each position all time. My vote goes to Wagner because of his amazing ability to dominate in 4 areas. OPS, small ball areas (bunting , stealing etc) fielding at the toughest position on the defensive spectrum , and helping his team win championships. Coach L
  6. I have to concur with Vance on this one. I have been a big M M fan from early on. The combination of sound minor league numbers. Handling of higher levels quickly. First round in draft. My own evaluation from watching a rookie have better plate disclipline than many cub vets, plus adjusting after his first call up, won me over big time. I know the sample size was small. But weighing all these things makes me believe Vance is right . I think we have a 820 plus ops guy on the cheap , with room to improve that for several years. There are not as many of those guys out there as you think. I am very excited to observe his progress as a full time player. Coach L
  7. Great deal . I have direct tv, so with GN , i get all games but the sat fox games that are not showing the cubs. With tivo , i really have no excuse not to follow the boys . Coach L
  8. Im totally on board Vance. Have a great 3 day boys Coach L
  9. Goony, i think you are dead on in the terms , you just discribed. Great take , i will be the first to admit , you will see more defensive first ss in his top 100 compared to cfs. I check out how many fit the defensive first profile. Have a great 3 day and excellent take Goony. Coach L
  10. Goony i would agree with you depending on your definition of not hit. But top researchers such as Bill James in their ranking of priemium defensive postions , such as ss have put many people in their top 100 all time based on defense primarly (they were weak on obp) . As i have said more than a few times , in and ideal world you would love to have 900 ops gold glover. Those guys are difficult to aquire. My point is dependent on what level of offense makes a gold glover valuable or invaluable. James address' s this line of thinking often. I get your point on wanting a big ops guy in the outfield , i too would love to see that happen. Coach L
  11. First of all , this is on of my favorite threads that have appeared on this site. To view people i have agreed with, disagreed with on various points , show that they are cub fans by being excited about the coming season is cool. It never bothers me , that someone is dissapointed enough to blame management or players. Nor does it bug, to see hopelessly incridible optimism. Like stats vrs scouts , the beauty is the love of baseball. The passion we have for the cubs is expressed in a variety of ways. Its been a tough couple weeks for my family, my wifes dad is in the final stage of a pretty severe bout with cancer. My faith carries me , but having fun reading and sharing our common love of the cubs is a heck of a great distraction from the pain. May God Bless all of your days. Im thankful for each and every one of you. Coach L.
  12. Tim, first of all , that was not meant as a slap at moneyball, i have said before on my first thread about Scouts Honor, i believe both books glorify their end of the argument. Writers not the people involved wrote the book. However in the chapter on evaluating the prospective talent for the June Draft . The chapter made it clear that they had a formula , that favored taking college athletes based on stats. I believe the term bells and whistles went off on Depo's computer when the right numbers came up. Second stat with the dodgers Scouts Honor pointed out the exact names of scouts fired when Depo took over, plus he dropped the number of hs picks in half his first two years on the job. The fact he favors less scouting and more numbers cannot be denied. Thats his right as a GM or ex GM to make those decisions. My point was to use him as a point of reference not make fun of moneyball. I know you read the rest of my points showing i would favor a better balance. I would favor a throw the darts technique , if i saw improvement. Thanks Tim I appreciate your input Coach L
  13. Craig, great overview and well thought out with documentation. I was totally on board with your view, until i read Scouts Honor. The Braves use high ceiling , but only with consideration to killer make up. I think you are correct to a degree that hitters are born with certain tools. I do think that mechanics can be altered and approaches can be taught to people with great desire and confidence(make up) . That being said nervous sysyem response , eye sight , lever size are genetic. I think where your going with this has some validity. I dont by the pure stat scouting espoused by Depodesta and Beane for the June Draft. But the cubs , as you intimated Craig could use some means beyond athletic tools for helping their ability to identify draftable hitters. I understand their desire to have athletes fill positions. I feel defense is still difficult to quantify numerically , therefore under-rated by many. Craig again good post, i find myself wondering what the right mix for drafting in june is. Coach L
  14. Goony, i probably agree more with you in this area ,than any other. Something is going wrong in the chain of dev. for positional players. The Braves make the pitching first , high ceiling, scout driven thing work to a tee. The Cubs have got to be breaking down in the scouting , coaching or both. It amazes me given their ability to draft and bring along pitching. Its got to improve or they will pay in spades in the long run. Coach L
  15. I dont pretend to have the absolute knowledge of whether jones will get traded or not. But i do know this for as crappy as our development has been in positional players, Jim Hendry has been great in the trade market for positional players. As Don Kess put it, the Normar trade was excellent. Pierre , Lee, Ramierz, Murton , Barrett. That is a load of offensive talent to procure without butchering your farm system. Hendry does not have it wired, but boobs dont make that many good trades either. The truth lies somewhere in between Coach L
  16. Well put Rob, an anomaly so to speak . Honus Wagner along with Bonds were historically also amazing. Great take and thanks man DL
  17. UK, with all the worries (some rightly so) for strict stat age related losses on Pecota , how does Roger Clemens defy the norms so much. I appreciate your level headed analysis thats why im asking. He truly amazes me. Gods Peace Coach L.
  18. Actually , including Willis and Loshe , (i wont include Garland who was drafted by the cubs) I think that is a large number of pitchers , compared to almost any team in baseball. I agree they have great room for improvement , i would want any team i coach to have the same hungry attitude. That does not mean they have not produced a strong class of pitchers and hopefully will still. Position players no contest, suckola so far, ive said that a ton myself. God Bless Coach L
  19. Good call UK, its a possiblity given the continuing conflicting verbage being leaked about Walker in the press. God Bless and thanks Coach L
  20. Thanks old cubs fan. that speaks directly to my question. Gods Peace Coach L
  21. Warren, you are dead correct that my argument is as dependent on context. I guess thats what i try to get across sometimes . There are many tremendous takes on this board and i will take the road God wants me to in saying . When i have been needlessly argumentive , i apologize. Im not going to worry about who else needs work . I enjoy the debate and its always fun to talk about the cubs. Again thanks for the great takes and i may not always agree . but hey i dont expect anyone to have to agree with what i say. Gods Peace and hope your days go easy. CoachL
  22. Goony, now we get to the crux of the argument , your feelings tword me. My arguments have been extremly positive. Check my latest posts. Misrepresentation runs both ways. Unless you think you have it all wired. I know i dont (my wife would not let me get away with that) Like you , ill feel free to post and disagree on some points . Gods Peace and I hope you have a great day. Coach L.
  23. Goony God Luv ya, yes it does. When people are trying to argue a strikout is more valuable than a productive out in the same context my friend , the statment needs to be made. My rationale behind posting in this thread is as follows. I think some people are trying to argue its okay to be a high ops whiffer. I have no problem with that. However a whiff in and of its self carries no value. So a person who makes contact can be in a position to aid a team with an out. Arguing strikeouts are better than other outs , without context such as a 10 pitch at bat vrs a 1 pitch hack out dont carry factual weight. Gods Peace and I wish i had enough baseball ability to get the chance to whiff at that level. Coach L.
  24. Trading a player at the right time , through careful self scouting. Is a critical element to an orginizations success. The Braves do it very well. Hendry hit homeruns on Hill and Choi. I agree with you Raw on the point if the right trade was offered i would not be afraid to trade Pie. Not that im in a hurry to see him go. It would be interesting to know how untouchable he really is to Hendry. God Bless Raw and i love your minor league info. Coach L.
  25. So a 10 pitch strikeout is equal to a 10 pitch at bat groundout that forces in a run. Look at both my posts , i am not arguing approach. The result of a strikeout has no benefit. God Bless and Great takes ya all Coach L.
