  1. UK , great take and the info on approach, sounds alot like my friends (our head baseball coach). However again strikeouts dont carry value at all in and of themselves. Approach is a process , the whiff as a result is what im talking about. Gods Peace and awesome analysis . Coach L
  2. Not all contact is contact. But strikeouts are never of value. Sometimes i believe people confuse a high ops guy with huge whiff totals as validating as strikeouts are not bad. Striking out is never productive , all things equal. I did not mean this as an inditment of anyone in particular. Just having read some articles where those lines seemed blurred. God Bless and great takes everyone. Coach L.
  3. Good Take Goony, i think you might be on to something with the idea of motivating him. Im sure that sword could cut the other way as well. I like your thoughts on it. God Bless Coach L.
  4. Cub in NY , you seem to be arguing two different things. Scouts can and do find players beyond the numbers. (read scouts honor) . To blindly say, Hendry has lucked (blind dog) on all his moves is narrow. I agree with you on possible utilization of the 40 man. Thats why i said , im curious as to why they put him on when they did. I split my points into two thoughts for that reason. Gods Peace and Great insight CubinNY . Coach L
  5. Lefty, quite humerous. I like Nefis D. But im not worried that Cedeno wont start. I think the orginization ( including Johnny B. ) loves him. Gods Peace and very funny insight. Coach L.
  6. Nice post by me. I obviously have Nefi itis , I meant more at bats than Cedeno. Gods Peace ya all .Coach L.
  7. Aside from injury or collapse, i dont think Nefi will get more at bats than Nefi. God Bless Coach L
  8. The move speaks to two areas in my opinion. The fact that scouts can give info that can speak as loud or louder than some statistical analysis. At the very worst in this case they saw beyond his raw numbers. Also, would he have been chosen by another orginization ( not likely) , and What was the cubs thought process on why they put him on. Obviously they saw things other people did not. I still would be curious as to why then. God Bless and great insights you all. Coach L.
  9. Grass, two things . 1. I hope your right on his ability to be durable. 2. I think Grudz with us and the cardinals deserved to play. Walkers defense should be rightfully questioned. On this roster he is our best full time option at 2nd base. I hope he is healthy and we can platoon in and replace him in games for D. God Bless and Good Take GrassB Coach L
  10. Grass Bass, you basically repeated what i said. The fact is neither player is an offensive dynamo. I was not the one who asserted one was better than the other. I just said i dont agree that A Gone is way better than Nefi. God Bless and again im defending someone who probably is not even going to start. Oh Well. Coach L
  11. I still dont buy the argument because OBP is OBP. A Gons is horrid worse cumilitively than Nefis. I like your thought on including the park metrics Goon, But i still think they are in the Marty Maion school of defensive valued shortstops . Which is why i think Cedeno is going to get the crack this year at that critical position. I pray he can give us more O and still be the defender i liked in limited time last year. Good Take Gooney . You are always fun to debate with God Bless Coach L
  12. If the roster stays static , i think Walker will be the starter. He can be subbed for on D and I dont think hes shown at his age and his past two years , that he will stay healthy for the full season. That position is the one that has the most potential for movement at this juncture. God Bless and thanks for the insight . Coach L.
  13. Nefi makes less money per year thank AGone. A Gone has a lower career obp and nefi is three years older. I dont give a rats rear what Boston has that is a different argument. I have said 100 times (probably not hyperbolic) Nefi and others like him Agone , have value because of defense . Nefi can start every day at ss and not kill you . That does not mean i want him over Cedeno or batting top two in the order. Its not the hill i want to die on. But facts are facts , saying A Gone is way better is flat out hooey on a good day. God Bless and I cant believe i spend this much of my life defending Nefi Perez. I must be Chester the chimps best friend. Have a good day Cub Buddies.
  14. Thanks for the update. Any more detailed info would be appreciated One of the great things about this board is the variety of info presented on all levels . Gods Peace and Thanks again. Coach L
  15. UK , sorry for once again finding your take balanced and well thought out , but i do. I have said many times , speed has value , as do other aspects of players strengths , given the variety of contexts the season occurs in . To become entrenched in any viewpoint to the exclusion of evaluting data in all potential contexts , leads to a potentially narrow interpretation. God Bless and again a well worded view on the subject. Coach L
  16. Thanks UK , makes even more excited about Pie. I had a feeling Gallagher might be , based on his age success ratio. Gods Peace and thanks again o fountain of minor league info. Coach L
  17. UK , once again great examples , delivered in a milisecond. I coached a guy 10 years ago in hs football , who ended up number1 in the draft (probably in spite of my coaching) The point is he was a backup in the fs and jv levels . He sat again 3 years in college. He has gotten smashed a ton in the NFL and keeps on keeping on. I read the book this weekend and thought of him as my lesson 1 in makeup. Driven people who can handle adversity with talent can do amazing things. You are so right about Sisco from what i read. UK , this will be tough > Give your 5 best in our system combining talent and makeup . Gods Peace and thanks for all your great takes. Coach L
  18. UK , sorry for not being lengthy enough on my take of "scouts honor" . I said in another discussion, that i believe the truth lies somewhere in between moneyball and Shanks work. I loved them both . I did not buy the extemes in either. I agree and value your takes on this aspect of the orginization. I have enjoyed the research you obviously have put into your posts over the years. God Bless and i really think your right this would be a great year to go after the international channel , with some fervor . Given our lack of draft picks this year, that would seem prudent and we should have money to burn. Coach L
  19. Gooney, I will have to agree, to disagree on Hendry. I think drafting and developing players still deserves credit. The Braves resisted taking Todd Van Poppel , everyones number 1 . When they took Chipper. Texeria , was a very viable other choice in Priors year. I do think the cubs have done well with pitching. You can not like the Trades or Results , but that does not negate the drafting and bringing along good talent . Those are two different element.s Goony , do you know if Wood was drafted while Hendry was affiliated with the Cubs. Thanks and God Bless . Good Take Goony P.S i said earlier . i think they have stunk in the positional aspect of the equation and it has handicapped them.
  20. CubinNY, I think part of what you say is dead on . Im a high school coach , who believes there is a science (strategy, bio mechanics and practice plans) and an art to seeing and encourging "makeup" I agree the Braves are the best at what they do. I dont agree that makes it a bad policy to try to emulate them. Hendry had had great success procuring pitchers with makeup . Thats the Braves number 1 tennent in their philosophy. 5 all start under 28 as of last year is amazing (Wood, Prior , Z, Garland, Willis) plus other big league arms, that have allowed us to be competitive. He has to be given credit for that , no matter how frustrated we get with injuries or results. Paitence is one of the elements the Braves preach thoughout the book. To agree with you again CuBinNY , i think some other approachs need to be looked at in drafting positional talent. College guys with numbers ? Im willing to do anything that nets us more than 1 consistant pos player in 15 years. Cedeno would be the 2nd . God Bless and great take CubinNy Coach L
  21. UK , again i find myself agreeing with your Cedeno assessment , i hope were right. He would carry more value because of his defensive integrity as the most critical position in the defensive spectrum. Murton would have to be very strong on O to carry more value. God Bless and i think they will both do alright . Coach L
  22. UK, i love your take, i just finished reading A Scouts Honor. in 3 days. Great read an anti moneyball take on Atlanta and other like minded teams success through scouting based orginization. The point im going to make is the Braves and Royals with Schuerholz (Orioles in 66 through 72) was 1. Draft best player available. ( scout quantified) A. upside potential, play to strength of draft and mostly high school players. Their feeling is they want to develoup the player and feel confident their system can do so. I think that what you were basically saying. Jim Callis validated there theory with a baseball america study. It made me think we are breaking down positionally with either poor scouting on positional players. or poor develoupment. Or a combo. Whats your take UK God Bless and thanks for the insight Coach L
  23. I think most teams realized the cubs needs and tried to "hold the cubs up more than we think" I think the left handedness and strong fielding aspects of Jones , along with my previous thought , resulted in Frenchy Jones playing RF for us. Im not worried about him being tradable. Their are a lot of contracts that will be tougher to dump than 2 years for an athletic lf hitting of with some pop. We tend to underestimate what people ask for in trades and also that other teams will amazingly take contracts on that we think and in fact might be lame. Gods Peace and Who knows how it will work out. Coach L
  24. Thanks M and P. Interesting read. It mirrors the Braves thoughts on makeup and building relationships with young players to check on makeup. I like the thought of getting after in the international talent channel . That is another area i think the cubs have not pushed enough. Gods Peace and Thanks for the link. Coach L
  25. Goony and Vance great points. Goony the point of yours i agree most with and i have said it before, is the lack of positional talent procured and develouped since 1991. Vance your point made me wonder how many scouts , how they are trained and the level of instruction and process in our minors. I am still reading so i will add as the Braves approach unfolds in the book. Gods Peace and thanks for the input Coach L
