  1. I could swear I've seen some great splits of Barret where as he works up the lineup from 8 to 5 or so his numbers get better and better. He'd be my choice for #5 vs. lefties until Murton is a little less of an unknown.
  2. As bad as our offense might be, it's improved over last year's disaster. For starters, we shouldn't be seeing Corey and Neifi ahead of DLee and Aramis in the lineup. Any combination of Pierre/Hairston/TWalk/Murton at the top of the lineup is a MASSIVE improvement in OBP in the one and two holes of the lineup from last year. As much as I didn't like the Jones signing, he's likely to do better than Burnitz. Murton will be better than Holla/Dubose were last year in LF too. No way we score 20-40 runs less than last year. I'd say more like 20-40 more than last year (which still isn't great). The difference to this year is if everyone meets some pretty reasonable expectations, there aren't any holes in the lineup at all. Last year there were several holes in the lineup, some due to injury at times, but others just due to roster deficiency. You had Hollandsworth hitting below the Mendoza line, Patterson looking terrible, and Neifi proving the law of averages after an early season burst. I think the holes in the lineup were part of the reason the Cubs were bad in the less than 2 out situations. There were just too many guys who couldn't put solid wood on the ball and the opposing pitcher pitched around/Intentionally walked accordingly. The times when the holes in the lineup didn't backfire (Neifi's GS) were miraculous.
  3. I think the toolsy guys flop more partially because they are hyped up before reaching the majors and also they don't necessarily need the things that aid in progression through the minor leauges, BB and K numbers. So a lot of them get a rude awakening when someone can actually throw a good curveball for strikes or something they didn't have to deal with at lower levels. I think the more disciplined at the plate guys that lack in some of the 'tools' won't get noticed in their minor league career as much, but probably have a better shot at "making it" while having a lower ceiling. If a player can put his 'tools' together with a good approach you'll probably get a real special player.
  4. how is joe morgan not in your 'announcers to punch'? Fixed. I don't know how I missed him the first time making it.
  5. Walker for Soriano doesn't make sense since Walker's defense seems to be the main reason JH wants to trade him. Soriano is only a marginal improvement offensively at best and looking at his road splits is troubling. He just offers more speed, more HR power (which could dropoff significantly outside of Arlington) at the expense of the worst 2B defense in the majors and a whole lot of patience which is what this team really needs to improve.
  6. I think this confirms what a lot of people beleive. To reach the postseason there needs to be a few things happen. First, a little overacheivement over these numbers. That's only possible in a few spots like CF OBP and Jones utilizing his change of scenery to return to form. You'd also need a little bit of that magic luck that makes teams overacheive, mostly in 1 run games, which is dependent upon bullpen (improved) and bench (not impressive) and utilization of both (not impressive). Then you just have to hope you don't need 95 or 96 wins to make it and you stay healthy. The optimist in me sees another 89 win season that comes down to the performance in the last week.
  7. If Dope can return to form at the AA level this year, his value will be sky high and a he would be great trade bait if this team is in the hunt or even not if it means getting a young corner OF. I'd much rather hold on to Lee then try to groom a free swinger. I'm pretty much in agreement on the rest. I'd like to see Scott Moore continue to improve in the Cubs system and he could come up and be a corner IFer if Ram or Lee leave. Jake Fox might be your future at catcher and I was impressed with his defense on Sunday which is great given his bat. Sing could start but wouldn't provide enough power to that lineup. I think he could fill out a nice future bench that could feature Theriot and Mcgehee.
  8. It is out. MVP 2006: The Road to Omaha bah everyone knows baseball with aluminum bats is not real baseball. Someone bought the exclusive rights to make MLB games didnt they? I couldnt remember who. I was hoping it was EA they always do a great job with the MVP games. At least in MVP 06 you can go to "summer rules" which are essentially MLB rules with takeout slides and wood bats. The gameplay engine is greatly improved.
  9. If Jones continues to decline, he sits the bench as an expensive 4th outfielder when Pie develops. If he improves his numbers from the last few years, he will be traded when Pie is ready at a pretty high value, if he does pan out. Too much talent is not a problem if you know how to handle it. I view Jones as a stop-gap followed by insurance.
  10. Would a temporary cut in payroll next year before a big push create a situation where the Trib company would be willing to eat the $4 million on Dusty's contract. If that was the case, I'd be confident in the young players to be utilized properly and Hendry could properly evaluate the needs of the team going into 07 once some of the youngsters get some regular PT.
  11. My educated guess would be that you don't have any "local interests" so you are given "the best game" between 2 first place teams.
  12. The same kind of duplicative bat that Lofton and Grudzielanek were? I like Walker in a run-producing spot Lawton NOT in center which means Murton to AAA until September
  13. I'd like to see Walker's power lower in the lineup. I'd also put Lawton in left and send down Murton to AAA to get some PT and bring up Grieve for a bat off of the bench. I'd still like Hairston in center and hitting #2 despite his recent shortcomings. Lawton LF Hairston CF Lee 1B Burnitz RF Ramirez 3B Walker 2B Barret/Blanco/Nomar C/SS Barret/Blanco/Neifi C/SS Bench Nomar/Neifi Hollandsworth Grieve Macias Barret/Blanco
  14. Yup, 32 from last year. Already half of the season, he has 27. Looks like Lee can be a 50+ HR hitter if he continues this pace. It'll be interesting to see how many intentional or unintentional-intentional walks he'll be receiving in the 2nd half of the season. Moving ARam up to 4th would be helpful if that starts to happen
  15. i remember that. i despise that guy for it now. another reason i can't stand that club is jack mckeon. when he argued that the ball that cabrera (i think) hit off of the basket in right field at wrigley was a homer while they were up by 10 runs, i lost any respect i had for him. de los santos and loduca displayed the only acts of class i've ever seen from the marlins last night. After Cabrera did that, My nickname for him is "The Punk". That's funny, I started calling him "Future Best Hitter in the Majors". I call him "Manny Ramirez Vol. 2"
  16. I heard in a Jerry Hairston interview on the score that after the team heard the news of Corey and JD being sent down there was a players only meeting and that it really woke the team up. It's probably not so much Murton as much as the shaking up of things.
  17. first time post He will definitely be close. His RBI pace is definitely going to heat up with Hairston and Walker now hitting in front of him. Plus, he was probably playing hurt for a lil bit, but will bounce back with the rest and the days off for the all-star break.
