  1. Buck Coats has played second base this year. Welcome aboard, Buck!
  2. I like his defense so far, he just has a nice LF arm, nothing more. He pretty much fits the description of "solid" for most parts of his game
  3. In an ideal world, Murton is platooned with Jones in LF or RF while a very productive corner outfielder takes the other position. This isn't an ideal world. The Cubs overall problem on offense in the majors and even in the minors is a lack of plate discipline. Matt Murton is one of many solutions that are needed to start to bring this ballclub on the right track. There is no suitable replacement and you aren't going to trade anything of value to improve this team for this year. So, you use this as a developmental year and hope he can produce. It is still a small sample size so far and you can see room for improvement. Power develops last, he's still 24. So things look good for a guy who has a good approach to hitting. Also, Pierre seems to be clogging up the top of the order with his presence despite being awful. With Murton's lack of power thus far, but good plate discipline, he'd be an ideal candidate to bat 1-2. I think it would be great to see him put up there and not shove Pie into the leadoff spot.
  4. Mark Prior for Robinson Cano is a great deal for both teams. John Kruk....
  5. How long until he's called up into AA? He went 2/5 with a HR and came into the day .340/.413/.632. He was solid last year in Daytona as well. It's not like either the AA catchers are setting the world on fire either. Are they keeping him back for his defense? I know that's been a criticism, but I was liked what limited action I saw from him in ST and he could continue to improve in AA while hitting at a higher level. With Barrett, and him being sort of a Barrett type of player, there's no rush to get him to the big leagues, but he's well deserving of a promotion. He'll be 24 in July, so he should be getting to AA soon. Is it just a matter of time?
  6. Where'd he find that control? It seemed like almost every batter was 0-2. Woo, economical Woody!
  7. I NEED to hear this story... http://www.rookiesquantities.com/images/jf04_11_Black.jpg = http://www.dearjoaquin.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10018/normal_signs194.jpg Well I'm still lost. Oh Well. I'll help you out. In M. Night Shamylan's "Signs" Mel Gibson's character's brother used to play minor league baseball. He has the record for the longest home run ever hit, but all he ever did was just go up to the plate and swing as hard as he could so he never amounted to anything.
  8. Plus a lot of these kids are hitting before their holes are realized. You could easily have 4+ gaping holes in this lineup at one point during this year. Same with very few facing the pitchers before. I'm going to say 46 wins.
  9. Yeah, I'll be there, too. Got me some bleacher seats :) :)
  10. So Craig Wilson isn't so available right now, eh?
  11. Nice, BB TWalk. Gotta wear Willis down and hope to get him out of there
  12. CUBS are 3-0 when the temperature is less than 45 degrees. Go CUBS !!! It's the new Bears/Bucs, the Floridians can't possibly win in the cold unless Henry Burris is starting.
  13. Who's Derrek Lee? :) :) A sweep would be HUGE for momentum. I'd love to see the two kids get two wins in a row.
  14. I jumped up and down when Murton got that base hit. I'd like to do that tomorrow again.
  15. Great plate discpline, good opposite field stroke and still a sound ability to pull the ball. This isn't the type of guy you have to worry about. He's hit on every level and just has had a bad trip. And hey, look, he's probably starting to hit again.
  16. Neifi is the baseball equivalent of a ball hog. He dangerously stole a putout and a possible DP. Even though there wouldn't have been an out, he really shouldn't risk it so he can smile that big dumb grin of his. Also, he can't hit.
  17. In other news, my avatar now has 4 Chicago Cubs on it. I like Guzman and Marshall getting some starts at the MLB level this year. They are competent fill-ins for injury and allow Hendry to not go into the offseason blind regarding the 07 rotation.
  18. But the CUBS do so much better when Neifi starts at second !! Team record by starting second baseman CUBS are 7-4 when Walker starts at 2b CUBS are 1-3 when Hairston starts at 2b CUBS are 2-0 when Perez starts at 2b Dude, just look at the stats. Neifi saved us. It would probably take a little while before Barrett could actually play at 1B since he probably hasn't gotten any work over there. In the meantime, I think we may seen Barrett making some earlier than normal exits in games where the Cubs have a decent lead in order to save him. Or he could just play every inning. Randy Hundley did it.
  19. Time to start the first non-Derrek Lee winning streak since 03! Seriously though, what are the odds of a no no? If I were vegas I'd put it at around 100:1
  20. I think JP has been a little unlucky so far this year with his balls in play, but I also have been a little discouraged with his plate discpline. If those bunts don't get down for hits, that's a 1 pitch AB out of the leadoff man. If he picks it up, which I'm pretty confident he will, it would be worth looking into an extension in order to be a stop-gap for either A) forcing Pie into the leadoff role when he shouldn't be there or B) rushing EPatt to the majors to leadoff. But if the market for leadoff men demands $10 million+ there's no way I'd give that up for an average defender with little power. Sure, the speed's nice, but you can find similar skill sets and OBP for much much cheaper just because a guy might not be a "proven leadoff hitter"
  21. Did anyone hear that joke about Santo killing himself? It went something like this: Pat: Rusch is throwing in the low 90's Santo: I can't find the gun here Pat: Now, Ron, it's only a 2 run deficit and the season is young, you don't have to kill yourself yet Santo: Ohhh, I'm not going to kill myself. But times like these, I worry.
  22. I think Len said that Barret told him that Maddux's pitches are "stronger and more crisp" Probably credited to his improved physicaly condition. Since every start in preseason, I've grown more optimistic each time that he can put together a good year.
  23. Something about this game thread gives me deja vu.....weird :)
  24. I'm gettin on. Keep it up with them XBH's!
  25. Could we see this guy in the majors in 07? IMO he's a better leadoff candidate for the future than Pie.
