  1. viewtopic.php?t=32091 It's because he was a 5th year senior.
  2. I hope he does well enough that the Astros sit idly by and watch free agency go by again in anticipation of re-signing him and "improve" their team by adding more people like Preston Wilson. Then, he can stay retired for good.
  3. I thought that as well, Bob didn't seem to agree. Its all speculation really because Williams is in Arizonia. Plus, he like Pole for pitching coach as well, he was maddux coach in atlanta wasn't he? Regardless, if Billy wanted the job, they'd have to be stupid to not give it to him. If Maddux decides to retire, I want him in the dugout next season too. I would love to see Maddux as PC and Billy as HC.
  4. Travis Hafner - good pick. If your team is in the AL With a line like that (and his girth), you stick him at 1B The others can fill in around him.
  5. The Yankess have always had a bigger payroll than all of the other teams. Go back and look at their teams of the 70's that they bought, mostly from the A's Charlie Finley. The recent spree has been unprecedented. I know in the mid 90s they did not have the highest payroll, Baltimore did. And when the Yankees finally took over that ranking, they were only slightly ahead of the 2nd and 3rd highest payrolls. It wasn't until around 2000, when they went hard after guys like Mussian, Giambi and others, that their payroll skyrocketed past everybody else. They led the league in payroll for 4/10 years in the 90's, but as goony pointed out, they were only slightly ahead of the other teams (2-7M). The years they didn't lead: 98 - 2nd 95 - 2nd 93 - 3rd 92 - 6th 91 - 8th 90 - 5th Interesting side note: The 1988 Yankees led the league with a payroll of 18.9M. The White Sox had the lowest at 5.9M. Oh, how times have changed.
  6. that was 1st base coach He was 1st base coach, then hitting, then bench as I recall. He moved to the FO to get away from the travel after that.
  7. I thought Billy Williams did not want the job anymore because of the travel?
  8. Correct, but they did have Everett, Taveras, Burke, Lamb, Bruntlett, Vizcaino, Rodriguez, Astacio, and Springer. We will not come back and make the WS, but they really weren't much better off.
  9. A ton? Maybe a few have, but the vast majority do not.
  10. Jones would be an offensive asset as a CF, especially since Pierre is hitting so well...but then who would bat leadoff?! Does it matter? Nobody is right now.
  11. That Craig Wilson is a cancer on that team. Get rid of him now!
  12. The pitching will likely improve if Prior and Wood can get back to 100%, and anything Miller provides will be an added bonus. However, adding Lee back to this lineup will not suddenly catapult them over bunches of other teams to put us in a position to be significantly better than we currently are. We had a weak lineup with Lee in it, and we have painfully seen how putrid it is without him. The optimism is admirable, but reality is saying the season is over. This isn't a lineup that will put together a 35-10 stretch.
  13. I think there's an excellent chance the Cubs decline his option, and Wood might give the Cubs a small [wife's] hometown discount compared to what he can get on the open market. But if someone offers him a guaranteed $30 mil/3 year deal I doubt he signs a one year $5 mil plus incentives with the Cubs. If just one one of the 29 other teams out there has a much larger value on Wood at the end of this year than the Cubs do, it's likely he walks. With a decent statistical showing this season, I think it's more likely the Cubs pick up the option and eventually extend him with a contract that makes us all say "huh?". It will be hard for another team to lure him away with 3/30 when the Cubs have 4/60 on the table.
  14. 2004 - 311/410/583/993 2005 - 305/408/595/1003 2006 - 307/437/615/1052
  15. http://www.post-gazette.com/images3/20050515wadesptworld1_230.jpg Who cares what it costs?
  16. Hafner and Bay are deserving of consideration. Vlad is another.
  17. Yes. Basically, Hendry is delaying the decision of who to take off of the 40man that was created when he added Womak until Prior is ready to come back. I'm hoping he's working on a trade or two. As bad as the team is that Hendry has assembled, he's generally been pretty good at making trades (as long as the trading partner isn't Florida...) Well, IMO the only trade that can salvage this season would involve a certain Florida player. Joe Borchard is not the answer.
  18. He's so fast he spins his wheels sometimes.
  19. And Henry Blanco for 10 games. I just threw up a little bit.
  20. Wasn't he called up a couple years ago? Everyone else in that draft was.
