  1. If by "are very close to" they actually mean "have absolutely no intention of", then this is great news.
  2. I think we're still an Abreu, Tejada, and healthy Wood away from being considered WS favorites right now.
  3. Jason Giambi Jeff Brantley Mitch Williams (both with and not with the Cubs) Robert Fick Albert Belle Aaron Boone Derek Bell Mike Matheny Lenny Harris (heck, every Lenny except Lenny Leonard) Brian Jordan Richard Hidalgo (2000 season) Edgar Renteria
  4. Mercker just always struck me as a whiner, and reports of him losing his temper over Chip and Soney didn't help at all. Plus, he's done pretty well against us over the years. And yes, Torres is the one who plunked Sammy.
  5. So you're basically OK with him as long as everyone else has a career year?
  6. Most of these are because of the jackass factor, some just because of their domination... Rob Dibble Joe Morgan Javier Valentin Wil Cordero Gary Sheffield Bobby Hill Zach Duke Randy Johnson Carlos Beltran Carlos Lee Bill Hall Roger Clemens Kent Mercker Ricky Botallico Adam Eaton Salomon Torres Matt Morris, oh hell, anyone wearing a Cards jersey.
  7. That's what I'm getting at, I guess. He did not have the surgery to repair his labrum, and that affected him last year as well. If it's surgically repaired, I'd take a chance.
  8. DIDO, when healthy he's a very good pitcher. I'd take that chance in a heartbeat. I don't know about that. He was healthy last year and was ineffective. The tear he had on his shoulder did damage and has lost significant velocity. I don't know that he was healthy last year. I believe he also had a frayed labrum (Kerry Wood) or something very similar that he tried to play through.
  9. He's had an era of 4.59, 5.01, and 5.09 the past 3 years. So short answer: NO. Not a problem if our offense is going to give him 8 runs of support in his starts (average, not total)...
  10. For some reason, seeing that didn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy like I thought it would...
  11. 12 Is that what they broke camp with last year? Yes.
  12. Maybe I'm overly optimistic or maybe I'm just foolish, but maybe Jim in his heart of hearts knows something about Miggy wearing Cubbie blue next year. Please let that be the only reason JJ is being considered.
  13. I was just talking to a cousin of mine, and he's telling me he thought he heard Levine mention the Cubs signing Sammy. Please tell me one of them was smoking something...
  14. Only to people who sorely devalue Pierre. One weak hitting CFer who won't take a walk making his entire worth dependent on his speed and batting average are never worth two left handed pitchers with decent upside plus a 4th starter. Never. We only gave up 1 LHP. Mitre and Nolasco are both RHP. How does "decent upside" equate to value?
  15. After signing Neifi for 2.5 mil, I absolutely do think Hendry would try to sign Burny to be the 4th outfielder. Dusty playing him over a superior player would be an afterthought.
  16. It sure isn't nice to wish evil on someone, but I really hope that Pinto never pans out after Dontrelle (Nolasco either).
  17. HAHA! Good one. I don't know. Don't they have Olmedo Saenz too? By my count, they have: C: Navarro/Phillips/Alomar INF: Furcal, Kent, Saenz, Izturis, Choi, Mueller, Nomar OF: Drew, Jose Cruz, Jayson Werth, Ricky Ledee, Jason Repko, Lofton And they're rumored to be close to signing Reggie Sanders. That's 17 guys. Izturis will be on the DL til mid-season and Choi might be non-tendered. Looks like they'll have to choose between 3 catchers and 7 OFers to have 11 pitchers.
  18. At the risk of being branded a "Hendry apologist", how do we know they didn't? Whatever, Hendry apologist. :D I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Hendry put a 2-3 mil bug in Jeromy's ear.
  19. Are there any better options out there than to just re-sign Sammy Sosa to take over right field? He would probably hit more than 60 homers again. -- Edward K., Indianapolis, Ind.
  20. When you see signings like Freel's, it just further illustrates exactly how much Hendry overpaid for Neifi. I question whether or not he would have received more than a million from any other team.
  21. Culpepper, no. McNair, maybe.
  22. What did we pay for the inferior Perez? $5 mil too much...
  23. I read that article (it cracked me up a bit), and I saw that blurb about Hill. If that's the popular opinion amongst other execs, you'd think a package including Hill might be enough for someone like Abreu or Tejada.
