  1. I think Walker will sit and DLee will be at 1B or DH with Nevin taking the spot he doesn't fill.
  2. Serena posted this in Minor League Discussions but I thought I'd share it here as well: Link
  3. Sounds like he will be in the Cubs game tomorrow. LINK Thanks, I didn't know Bynum got hurt as well.
  4. If the Sox are blessed, the Tigers must be bathed in holy water this year. LOL! Despite the Sox best efforts, they haven't been able to over take Detroit yet.
  5. Someone posted in Baseball Discussions that DLee had been recalled after the game. Has anyone else heard this?
  6. Actually, there has been a lot of speculation about demoting Anderson. In either case, the Sox have a much better offense which allows them to wait out a struggling youngster (of course, the Cubs season is likely over so they should just allow Murton to get as many at bats as possible).
  7. He didn't have much of a choice because Walker had already been used and there wasn't anyone else available from the leftside. Remember, Barrett's suspension (and Womack's injury tonight) means few bench options.
  8. Tonight? I thought he was returning on Monday.
  9. Come talk to us when you're close to 20 games under .500. Then you might know what it's like being in our shoes. And after the teams whose guts you hate are constantly winning during that time. LOL, cheer up, the Tigers won so your beloved White Sox can't gain a game.
  10. Guillen's quote: Wow, that's a lot of nerve! Kenny Williams' Quote:
  11. Exactly! If I hear another person, on the Boo Ya network, say "The Rocket" I'm going to puke (Roger Clemens anyone?). He's not a savior and I hope the Astros don't make the playoffs. What he said! she
  12. How the heck does Russ Ortiz help this team? They have enough 5th starter candidates...
  13. I'm going out but I'll record the game. I'm still an addict so missing the games, no matter how horrible, isn't an option.
  14. exactly. people can argue all they want that there is only one meaning of the word and everybody's minds operate the same way, but any linguist would tell you that is not true whatsoever. you can say Ozzie or my cousin meant it as a slur against homosexuals, but nobody knows how Ozzie's or my cousin's mind works. language is very imprecise, and there are alot of people who lack the ability to articulate with the proper words. as for jam's comments, I have heard and know of several homosexuals that call each other or other homosexuals "[expletive]" and "queer" all the time. do they have no harmful intentions when using that word? the answer is obvious, sometimes they do and sometimes they don't, just like the rest of us. the term is much more flimsy and has alot more meanings and connotations than most racial slurs. one of those meanings is a catchall phrase used by unarticulate people to have no more signicance that calling someone a "jerk." the best analogy I can think of is using the word "gyp" when somebody rips you off. that's the word you know and came to use, not even realizing it is a derrogatory phrase about gypsies. there is nothing in peoples heart or mind that means it as an insult against a group of people. it's just the word that they use in that situation. In one of the examples you used, homosexuals are taking ownership of the word and lessening the hateful impact of the word to their own group, much in the same way blacks have taken ownership of the word "[expletive]". Does that make it right? I can't say. There's been long debate about whether those slurs are too hateful on any level to ever be used as anything less than offensive. The catchall meaning for "[expletive]" is not inarticulate it's ignorant. There's no way people aren't familar with other insults to use to demean someone's masculinity such as "wimp". They use "[expletive]" because it has a much more demeaning connotation due to it's association with homosexuals and the thought that being gay makes you in some way less of a man. Those people are ignorant and there is a level of hate in their use of the word. I would imagine your cousin wouldn't go into a gay bar and say to anyone "[expletive]" with the intention that it's just another regular old insult that he uses. And if he was so ignorant, I would imagine he would be informed pretty quickly how offensive he was. The use of "gyp" is offensive too. It's a slur, as well. Just because the gypsies aren't as numerous in these parts doesn't make it any less so. People use the term "jew" as verb to mean talk someone down in price, are they not being offensive in that instance? You're right. Some people like to say that having to worry about those things is "PC" but I think it's just common courtesy. I'll admit that I used to use "Jew" as a verb without giving much thought to the underlined racist connotation (that is until I dated a guy who was Jewish and figured out how stupid that was...) In fact, his family owns a business on Roosevelt Rd in Chicago (also known affectionately as "Jew Town"). I was in the store once when a patron asked my, ex, boyfriend's father: "you're not trying to Jew me down right?" The sad part is, I don't think the person knew he was Jewish but he apparently thought it was an OK thing to say...
  15. Hmmm, this is interesting. I rarely hear anyone (who's not a rapper) say "[expletive]" or "nigga" and I'm black. I don't use either word (I also don't use the word "[expletive]" but I've heard others use it...) I hear a lot of teenagers say "that's gay." Which seems silly to me.
  16. Murph said Bud would step down in 8 months (or 18 months. I can't remember which)
  17. Navy Pier, the number one (by attendance) tourist attraction in Illinois. Millenium Park (and the Park Cafe - very good food). Various theatres - 'Rent' and 'Wicked' are both playing this year, among others North Avenue Beach Take a cruise on the Lake/River Top of the Hancock or Sears Tower (Signature Restaurant at Hancock is AWESOME, but very expensive. Seafood - Shaw's Crab House Pizza - Lou Malnati's (stay away from touristy places like UNO, etc.) Steak - Chicago Chop House That's just a few things off the top of my head... I'll add that if you want a really good steak Ruth's Chris is the way to go! Nick's Fishmarket on 51 S. Clark for seafood and Lou Malnati's for Pizza.
  18. Please enlighten us as to how well Jered Weaver plays 3b. I must be totally out of the loop on that. Um...as far as I know, he doesn't....hope that helps. Neither does anyone else on this team. Since Aramis is the only one who can play 3b for this team, I was just wondering who your replacement would be, unless you had some information on Jered Weaver that I was unaware of. NEIFI, and if you're dumping the season (which trading Aramis is) you can always bring up Theriot or Moore. If the Angels are willing to trade Jered Weaver for Aramis I don't care if we bring back Macias to finish the year at 3rd. You have to do that deal. Then what do the Cubs do at 3rd base next year and beyond? Theriot and Moore don't seem like longterm solutions to fill the void.
  19. Yeah, but he bashes absolutely EVERYONE, even if it means double-speaking constantly. He's written so many articles where he'll completely counter an argument he made earlier. Back in the early 90's he did this all the time in terms of Jordan and the Bulls. This is when it became obnoxiously apparent that he just flip flops his argument. The guy sells papers. He must be doing something right?? Apparently not enough considering they're the number two paper in town. The Sun-Times is technically the "number two paper in town" however, it's sports section has been held in higher regard (than the Tribune's) for years. In fact, the Sun-Times is synonymous with sports in many circles and it's circulation is greater than the Trib's at the newsstand. True. I agree in terms of the sports page especially in terms of Illinois high school sports coverage. But like you said it has a greater circulation newstand wise. Tribune has a stronger distribution subscpition wise. One major reason the Sun-Times sells more newsstand wise is due to format. The tabloid style is easier to read on the daily commute. Just so you know, I wasn't arguing the Sun-Times is bettter than the Trib overall (I'm a Tribune subscriber).
  20. Regardless, selling papers doesn't mean you are a good writer. It means you are willing to pander to the lowest common denominator that draws the most traffic. He's a good attention whore, but that's about it. Whether or not someone is a "good" writer is highly subjective. The point about paper sells, in this instance, is relevant as it relates to sports. My response has nothing to do with a support for (or against) Mariotti but it's naive to think that he isn't one of the main reasons why the Sun-Times outsells the Tribune on newstands. As pointed out earlier, the Sun-Times sports section is more well respected than the Tribune's; it has been so unbalanced that the Tribune actually has commercials featuring only their sports section (to generate interest). BTW, I think the Sun-Times relishes in Mariotti's "whore" like ways because ultimately, it gives them more publicity.

  22. Please cite some examples of this. Are you basing that comment on his reputation or what's actually occured this season? Because the games I watched showed Ramirez actually hustling out a few hits this season, which is something he admittedly didn't do last season. He's made 2 errors this season. His fielding hasn't been a problem at all. What he has done is struggle mightily without protection in the lineup. He's pressed, and swung at bad pitches. He's not a player you trade unless you are getting a very productive ML player in return. He has done it a few times this season and it has been noticeable enough for Brenly (and others) to call him out on it. ie He hit a ball recently at home that he assumed was an out but it fell in. The cameras showed him not hustling out of the box and as a consequence, he barely made it into second base. It is possible that, even with his speed, he could have made third base if he'd been going hard all the way. I will also say that for stretches this year he has hustled all the way down the line; Baker claimed he spoke with him about doing so. The problem is, he doesn't consistently run.
