  1. If he promises to put up a .900 OPS for the league minimum, we should sign him to platoon with Johnson again.
  2. Does it help to imagine how difficult it will be for him to guarantee that third year? It won't be difficult at all. There is essentially zero chance that the third year doesn't vest. Thank Lou for all of those worthless PH appearances he gave Bradley while Bradley was nursing his previous ouchie. Not gonna matter. He's not going to clear it by 3 games.
  3. 75 G? All he needs is 75 games this year? What kind of condition is that? We know you're a terrible hitter, so we're going to protect ourselves. Your 2011 option only vests if you get at least 3 hits during the 2009 season. Ha.
  4. You underestimate yourself and then immediately overestimate yourself in the same sentence. Impressive. :D Imagine what I could have done if I'd gone to law school ??? likely become an egotistical jackass.
  5. Sandberg believes strongly in small ball and being aggressive. Bunt runners over, hit and run, straight steals, manufacturing runs, playing the game the right way. Oooooh, I LOOOVE running-into-outs-ball A couple of weeks ago he had his #3 hitter sac bunt with a runner on first and second and no outs, IN THE FIRST INNING. Case closed, he shouldn't be managing the Cubs. If a player sac bunt do that always mean a manager told him to. Maybe the player did it on his own? I don't think any #3 hitter in all of baseball has every laid down a sac bunt in the 1st inning unless the manager called it. I'll go all the way down to tee-ball with that assertion. It's just that stupid.
  6. umm, when you give up a game tying home run with 2 outs in the 9th to a terrible hitter on literally the only pitch he can handle, then yea, it's your fault as much as anybody's Honest question: who called for Gregg to throw "the only pitch [Franco] can handle" - dugout, Soto, Gregg?
  7. The commercials from 5 years ago with the little rodents cracked me up. I'm not sure why.
  8. Why? It might actually get us an ok live arm from A ball that way. And it's not Rich's fault that there was no spot here. Yeah, Cubs fans should be rooting for him to do well since it'll improve the return we get for him. I've seen people talk about getting "bothing at all," and that's not the case. I hold nothing against Rich and I'm not pissed at him. I hope he does well. I'm pissed b/c whatever we get won't be as good for us as if Rich had pitched in '08 and beyond like he did in '07. Not saying it's his fault, just pissed at the circumstances.
  9. They have better ones than the Cubs. We're not the bar by which other teams measure their farm systems.
  10. You underestimate yourself and then immediately overestimate yourself in the same sentence. Impressive. :D
  11. I'm happy for Rich that he's at least having some good outings. Maybe he's figured something out. But if he turns it around and gives the Os anything close to his 2007 numbers, I'm going to be so pissed off.
  12. who is Kemp replacing? That's a pretty good offer, but if you don't have any place to put him or he's not much better than who he's replacing, Kemp probably doesn't justify the trade of Pujols. And I'd see what I could get for Ibanez, again, depending on who you had to replace him.
  13. Unfortunately, I also have this feeling. I actually think, if Lou departs on good terms (i.e. he's not fired), his successor may well be Alan Trammel. Ryno will get some consideration when Lou moves on, however. I hope so.
  14. Maybe, maybe not? Come on. How are you so sure that he "clearly figured something out" - based on 40 games in AAA? I'll grant you that he's not striking out in 25% of his PAs, and his K/BB ratio isn't 15/1, which is a start. He's mashing the ball in 40 games. But it's 40 games in AAA at 26. Maybe he figured something out and he's improved. But Ryan Braun level?
  15. Even Buck and McCarver were saying you'd really like to not have to go to Marmol with a 7-run lead. No, you wouldn't. And you don't have to. Why carry 12 pitchers if you can't have mop up guys handle mop up duty?
  16. Unfortunately, Hendry wasn't hired this off season, so we have a lot more than just 2 months of regular season games on which to judge him. You're correct. Check out his regular season record as a GM for the past two seasons and you might judge him to be among the best. I'll give you last year, but the '07 team wasn't one of the best. We won a pretty crappy NLC, but had what the 6th best NL record (and we had the benefit of playing a bunch of mediocre teams more than the teams in other divisions). Go back one more year and we were the worst team in the league. But the GM isn't judged year-to-year. And his overall tenure has been pretty spotty. The point remains - we've had much more than 2 months to judge Hendry. But with the way he's structured the contracts and left the farm without any talent, we're entering a pretty tough stretch for him.
  17. The pressure on the guy is tremendous. Not only does he have to constantly hear about how bad his defense is, he also knows that with Lou, if he makes one mistake he is probably going to sit on the bench for the rest of his call up. It's possible it could be jitters from getting on the ML field for the first time in a while. I'm sure everyone's sailed a warmup toss over the 1B head at some point. But this has the potential to be a disaster. Which could at least be funny.
  18. Fox can't play 3rd base. And Fontenot cant hit LH pitchers, and has terrible range at 3rd base. Give me Fox against the LH pitcher who kills left handed hitters, and take the chance with his D. Id definitely take the bad defensive 3rd baseman who can hit over the mediocre 3rd baseman who cant. depends on how bad, how mediocre, and how much both can hit. It's certainly possible that getting bad/average defense and bad hitting from Fontenot is better for the team than horrendous D and good offense from Fox. You can make some good guesses, but it's going to be impossible to really know which is going to lead to more runs (or give up fewer runs). BTW - I do wonder if it would be worth running Fox out there for a week or two, even if it ultimately costs us a couple runs over what Fontenot would do, simply to give AL teams a chance to see him get 20-30 ML PAs to see if he's a viable DH.
  19. Unfortunately, Hendry wasn't hired this off season, so we have a lot more than just 2 months of regular season games on which to judge him.
  20. Hopefully it lights a fire under Hendry to try and get approval of it from the Trib/Ricketts and to re-start things with Towers. Like it was already mentioned it gives guys like Ascanio, Wells and Patton a little more time up to prove something and maybe makes 1 of them a little more attractive in a trade. The only thing that would "light a fire" under Hendry would be a 20-foot tall pile of donuts. Seriously?
  21. I don't think Jim views this as an excuse he's trying to build. I think he honestly thinks that the Cubs needed another LH bat in order to be a better team, even if it meant that the LH bat wasn't likely to be quite as good as the RH bat it was replacing. His infatuation with the side of the plate a guy stands on is but one of the many things that drive me crazy about JH.
  22. love that movie ETA - but I think the football player pulls out a gun while running down the sideline and shoots a prospective tackler and then shoots himself after reaching the end zone. I don't think he shoots a ref.
  23. But you know what else is a joke? Suspensions given to Cubs' players. You just know they'll make an example of Z and give him 7 or 8 games or something to force a missed turn in the rotation. You just KNOW it. what?
