  1. inflammation in the shoulder? uh oh
  2. I'm not saying Young was a great defensive SS, but he moved to 3B the year after he won a GG at short, right? They moved him to short b/c they needed to replace ARod. They moved him to third b/c they wanted to give Andrus a shot in the majors. The situations aren't completely analogous, but they moved an established player to give a young, unproven, but better defender a chance at the position. It's similar to what the Cubs did with Theriot this year and it would be similar if they did it with Castro and Lee in 2-3 years. It's similar. It doesn't have to be exactly the same thing.
  3. I can't imagine that saving a team any significant money in contract talks. At the same time you can use your 10/5 rights to negotiate terms for accepting a trade. I don't think anyone's saying it's going to cut $10 million dollars off Lee's next contract. But in the context of the discussion, Lee signing a 3-4 year deal(which would be his last extended deal), the value of being able to block a trade, even if it's one team down the line, would have more than insignificant value. i don't think in this situation it would. Lee is highly unlikely to waive his 10/5 rights. And even if he did, he could ask for a NTC from his new team as compensation for waiving his 10/5 rights before agreeing to the trade.
  4. Jason White is available.
  5. and it was on BBTN last night.
  6. Man, the Tigers lineup is just brutal now.
  7. Im sure the state of Tennessee is enjoying this. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the positive effect on their fan base is at least partially behind this lawsuit.
  8. it's a little odd to be talking about moving castro at this point, given that lee is somewhere between 2-3 years from being ML ready (on the fast track). I'm not saying the Cubs shouldn't be thinking about that possibility, but i doubt anyone in the front office is spending huge chunks of time worrying about this quite yet. if you have 2 really good young SS, you trade one for a really good player at another position or you move one (most likely to 2B). Doesn't seem that difficult.
  9. would be a bit redundant, but i guess i can't put it past Hendry anyway.
  10. rough start, Lane http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5411727
  11. are we sure his value rebounds after the second half? Hasn't Haren been a first half pitcher literally every year of his career (eta: checked the stats, looks like his first full year - '05 - is the lone exception)? And are the Dbacks thinking Haren isn't worth the $29m he's going to get for the next 2 years (or $41m over the next 3)? I really don't know one way or the other, but I'm wondering if this is really a horrible deal for the Dbacks. Saunders is no Haren (despite what the GM says about his wins), but he's a guy you can run out there every 5th day in the NLW and pay 1/3 of what you're paying Haren. If you're not winning this year and not expecting to win next year, maybe getting 2 players you really like, a ML starter (in his first arb year), and saving yourself $20m+ over the next 2 years isn't so bad. Especially given what the fangraphs article said about Haren's value around the league.
  12. Penn State playing a non-con game against a team that has made a bowl game in the last decade. I mean, if it were a non-conference away game, that would be worth pointing out. But this?
  13. is there a significance to that game that I'm missing?
  14. and not even Hendry would have been dumb enough to sign Willis to an extension after acquiring him (I'm convinced it was a requirement of the deal for Miggy)
  15. That's what I would have thought before the Haren trade as well. I would have laughed if I was told Haren would be traded for a package including a 30 year old pitcher with an xFIP close to 4.7 who strikes out around 5 batters per game. I'd be stunned if they were looking to spin Haren off and if they valued Lee that highly, but I was stunned they got him for a package built around Joe Saunders as well. i can guarantee you there are a couple of teams that are pissed off that the d'backs only got that in return because they could have easily trumped the angels' offer without too much damage to their system. Probably. I never know how much these trades tell us about the GM giving the player away for very little or if it tells us more about what the "real" value of the player on the market is. I thought the PTBNA was widely considered the Angels top prospect. So the top prospect plus a 2009 2nd round pick. I don't know much about either, but it's not like Saunders was the centerpiece.
  16. Lane just needs to stay outside the borders of the state of Tennessee at this point. I understand the move by Pola somewhat, but it seems like he could have waited another year, let CJ run wild, and then get an offensive coordinator position at a school that doesn't have sanctions against it. Isn't Lane his own OC? I guess it might be helpful if Pola wants to parlay this into a HC job at some small school where having the OC title without the responsibilities might still look important. But it still seems like an unusual time to leave an NFL job to take the same gig at Southern Cal.
  17. That's not really the reason. That's like saying dollars are worth more than yen because dollars come in denominations of up to $100 and and Yen up to 10,000. The scale has nothing to do with it. actually it has a lot to do with it. The question was not why OBP is undervalued in computing OPS; the question was why OBP is more valuable than SLG. Thus, scale is irrelevant. Thus . . . ugh, Kyle is right. His last sentence is correct. The comparison to dollars and yen doesn't really work, imo.
  18. That's not really the reason. That's like saying dollars are worth more than yen because dollars come in denominations of up to $100 and and Yen up to 10,000. The scale has nothing to do with it. wait, what?
  19. Right. I'm not saying the Cubs need to move him, but they should definitely be listening if people are offering. That's exactly what I've been saying, listen to all offers, but trading someone like Marmol would take an exceptional offer. therein lies the disagreement. or maybe it's just a question of what you mean by "exceptional."
  20. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/is-timmy-broken/
  21. can he take Mrs. Doubtfire with him?
  22. Mo and KRod, almost. Making $13m in arbitration is unlikely, but getting that much in free agency is possible if he maintains his level of performance for the next few years. Remember, the last year of arbitration is 100% of market value. It's not like earlier arb years where there's a discout involved. No arbiter is going to give a guy with less than 100 career saves 13M thank you. Marmol has still just 1 (if he makes it through this year) year of full-time closing under his belt. He's not getting paid like Papelbon. Compare: Papelbon salary last year and this year (1st to arb years): $6m+ and $9m+ Marmol salary this year (1st arb year): $2m+
  23. chances of cup pinching/crushing something while diving for a ball in the OF >>>>>>>>>>>>> chances of getting hit in the nuts while playing defense or leading off of 1B.
  24. You're really making yourself look bad here. If you think it's a bad idea to trade Marmol, then say so. But stop inventing future hypocritical arguments and applying them to people in an effort to make yourself look correct. A lot of people (myself included) fear that moving Marmol would put Hendry in a position where he'd keep Cashner in a relief role. That's a legitimate fear. Backtobanks scenario is less likely, but I don't see it making him look all that far out there. Less likely? how many arb-eligible closers pull in $13m? how many FA closers pull in $13m?
  25. If Hendry pays Marmol $13m in his last year of arbitration, you better believe there will be some bitching.
