  1. Rich Rod hasn't had enough time yet. I hope he gets a long extension so he can get all his guys and fully implement his system. [i don't wish injuries on anyone, btw, and I hope Woolfolk fully recovers.]
  2. aren't they typically more specific to "dangerous activities" like doing a wheelie on your motorcycle? I'd be shocked if you could really fit punching someone into any of the out clauses in a MLB contract.
  3. um...http://www.northsidebaseball.com/forum/topic?f=29&t=58086
  4. so you don't actually have to "sign" anything before midnight? Just agree verbally and then what? "But both sides were willing to relent on some terms in that final, frantic minute, and Rizzo and Boras verbally agreed on the contract before midnight."
  5. how is a "p" a humpback? people in the south really are backward, I guess.
  6. Is Gonzalez not selling high?
  7. one of these kids just doesn't belong... though, Jay Bruce hasn't exactly lived up to the hype either. That's an impressive list, but the inclusion of Bruce and Stewart is strange.
  8. I guess what I'm trying to say is that since Theriot is gone, I'm willing to pretend those drawbacks don't exist. can't argue with that mindset
  9. I'm still not a big fan of the move. If Castro develops as he is supposed to, the Cubs cost themselves 7-10 million dollars by bringing him up one month early. That's a tough pill to swallow especially when knowing the 1 month they sacrificed it for came in a meaningless season. I don't think Castro should have been held down for development reasons but the financial difference was too much to ignore. I was against it, but the fact that it facilitated the move of Theriot makes me more than willing to deal with the longer term ramifications. Maybe. If he were called up a month later, he still would have lead to a Theriot trade if he played this well. The Cubs didn't know at the time that Castro was going to be called up early for a hopeless team in a throw-away season, but man it would have been nice if they had.
  10. While that may all be true, I'd prefer to play Soto more earlier in the season when it's cooler and we're not out of it yet (and not bat him 7th or 8th). Especially in years like this, where the team is out of it in July, if not before, you start resting him more. Makes even more sense b/c of the heat of day games in July and August. I think Lou pretty much F'd this up as best as he could without going to a strict platoon for 4 months of the year. It's pretty much what I expect from Lou at this point. His handling of Soto is a significant factor in my wanting him to have been fired for most of this season (if not before). I wish Lou would get fired too . That way they could bring in another great manager like the ones they have had in the past. You know, guys like Dusty Baker, Don Baylor, Jim Riggleman, Jim Lefebvre, or the king of the stats, and all around brainiac, Don Zimmer. You know that your post lacks any sort of rational logic whatsoever, so why would you type it?
  11. in 2009. we'll see about 2015.
  12. So you changed his name to Starlin. If my wife were going to have another baby, it would be named Starlin. Anyone who has a son after about July 1, 2010 and doesn't him Starlin should be incarcerated for most of the rest of his life.

  14. watch espn for live sports and don't ever watch it otherwise. i guess pti is okay... maybe. I like PTI because it's the only time an ESPN personality expresses an opinion and it's not staged. you sure about that?
  15. My son's favorite player is/was Theriot (thanks to the shared first name). But he has taken on Castro as a substitute. I couldn't be happier right now.
  16. well yeah, that's because lou has caught up and been playing him consistently for a month. he wasn't on pace for 120 starts when he was practically platooning with koyie [expletive] hill So you're upset because Soto's getting the appropriate playing time in the wrong order? Comparing his starts by month, we're talking about the difference in less than 1 game a week here. is 120 really average for a good young C? I'd think you'd want at least 130 or even 140. While 150+ isn't probably a good idea, esp given the number of day games the Cubs play, 120 is way too few, imo. I don't want to ruin him, but why waste his prime with just 120 starts and put him at the back of the lineup, which only further limits his PAs?
  17. did someone post this and i missed it? http://oversigning.com/testing/index.php/2010/08/04/elliott-porter-speaks/
  18. Jerk. I don't blame him. If I was in his position, I'd probably do the same. He already has a World Series ring, his family is settled here in the city, what's the incentive to agree to a trade? I don't buy this. You're talking about two months playing a game when you are away from home half the time anyway. He would at least have a shot at playing in the playoffs this year. If Chicago is where he has to be he should look to re-sign with the Cubs in the offseason on a one year deal for $3 or $4 million. Exactly. It wouldn't kill the guy to let the Cubs trade him. I certainly like him a bit less after this. you like a player on your team less for wanting to remain on your team? my mind is [expletive] blown.
  19. They aren't identical, and they aren't particularly similar either. they're analogous, jersey. they just are. i'm not sure why that's unacceptable to you. but if it is, so be it. the cubs are going to resolve the situation if Lee continues to progress and Castro proves to be a very good MLB SS. how they do so, no one knows. but if they choose to resolve it in a way that isn't sufficient similar to any situation in the past for your liking, such is life. It has nothing to do with whether or not the situation will be resolved. It's about whether the player will happily play along. The lack of a precedent for 24/25 year old SS's who can handle the position happily moving off that position just as they approach the final years of arbitration and pending free agency is meaningful. so he'll move or sit on the bench (if that's the Cubs decision). similar to Soriano - he'll either accept happily or move begrudgingly. seems like moving to second or third is less harmful to his FA contract than pouting on the bench.

  21. and no one's saying that's what has to happen. some people are saying Castro might be moved (and pointed to an established SS being moved for a younger, better defender, which also happened with the Cubs just a few months ago). some people are saying there could be a trade. some people are saying it's way too early to even be worried about this. i'm not sure if there is an identical situation in baseball history. but I don't much care. the Cubs will move one of the 2 to a different position, trade one (or both, I suppose), or let one linger in the minors or on the bench. if none of those things has ever happened before, it's going to happen now for the first time. continually pointing out that there are differences between this hypothetical situation and a situation thrown out as somewhat similar, when no one is saying there aren't differences, is really sort of frustrating.
  22. so we've clearly established that the situations are not identical, which is an argument that exactly no one has made. Glad that's settled.
  23. Couldn't a guy just say, "OK if you want me to waive my 10/5 rights, then you need to add a NTC to my contract"? They sure could, and they'd probably get it. But they're using their leverage on that instead of something else which might have a more tangible value... say an assignment bonus. If the team comes and says "we're going to trade you to Team X, do you approve?" the player says "yes, but only if they give me X, Y, Z." The player has a lot (almost all?) of the leverage in that situation.
