  1. I'm not sure it's the same thing. I'm quite sure it's not the same thing. When you're paying Soriano a billion dollars more than anyone else is offering, you can definitely say "I need an immediate answer" and you will obviously get one bc people like money. But you can't make a perfectly reasonable offer to a guy that would prefer to sign with a team that was just in the WS and say the same thing. You'd lose credibility and not get the deal done anyway.
  2. Setbacks? You're saying there are things that have happened in the last 18 months that have significantly negatively impacted the plan for this organization? And you're saying a ton of these things have happened? If so, I disagree.
  3. I don't normally wish injury on players, but I kind of hope his arm falls off now just to screw the Tigers for signing him. Why? His agent did his job and his first choice was to stay in Detroit. It's our front office's job to not get off the phone without a deal and make sure they don't get used for leverage How pathetic clingy gf do you expect Jed and Theo to be?
  4. Or, you make damn sure you don't get off the phone without a signed deal. You do enough to get guys to not try and get someone else to match This is precisely what the Angels appeared to have done on the Hamilton deal. The Rangers had a long standing agreement with Hamilton's agent that they would get a chance to match any offer. They even had a meeting scheduled with Hamilton's agents this afternoon. The Angels apparently approached Hamilton's agent and told them what they were willing to pay, including a 5th year, and wanted a straight up yes or no answer. If they found out they were shopping the offer around or trying to get another team into a bidding war they were rescinding the offer. 1 maybe easier to do that when you're a team with a WS lately and a [expletive] load of talent that strongly suggests you're going to the playoffs this year, and 2 easier when you're laying out $125m for what may be the last 5 years of Hamilton's career. Theo isn't looking to make Sanchez one of the highest paid players so he doesn't have that leverage. The cubs ain't the angels folks. Let's try to keep some perspective.
  5. Huh. Avoiding the hammer? @SIPeteThamel: Al Golden, a favorite of Barry Alvarez, has emerged heavily at Wisconsin. Golden mulling a decision today.
  6. Possibly, but that isn't a good thing. Recent injuries and recent bad performance, even if related, say bad things about a player's projection going forward. So we're considering the possibility that his bad performance that came immediately during and after his injuries might be related to said injuries. Might? I'm not sure it's intellectually honest to count those as two separate strikes against him. If you still don't want to take a shot with Brown, whatever. But let's not pretend that there was some chance he would have his best performance while injured so the fact that he didn't is some negative data point.
  7. It's kind of weird to me. Hiestand came in very well respected and when he left (mutually), Brian Kelly just glowed about him. But the running game was just utterly inept while he was here and while it's not all on him, he's a big part of it. I'm thinking it had to simply be that the players and he weren't meshing or something like that. I know the current players loved Pittman (2 threatened to go pro if he didn't come back) and nobody batted an eye when Hiestand left. Could be a personality fit. Kelly is a micromanager to the nth degree and largely expects his coaches to be that way to. It sounds like Hiestand fits that better where Warriner may not have. Maybe the players recruited by Lane and Dooley didn't fit that style. Who knows. But I'm glad to have him. Also sounds like Diaco is interviewing at UW. I could see him turning down some schools for a better HC gig but not UW. Hope someone else gets it.
  8. I hated that loss too. We had a ridiculous amount of talent on the offensive line when Harry Heistand was here - I honestly believe the entire 5 starting o-linemen will play in the NFL - but it underperformed dramatically in run blocking. When Pittman came in a year ago, the running game went from 90 yds/gm in 2011 to 160 yds/gm. We also went from 2.8 yds/rush in 2011 to 4.7 yds/rush in 2012. Part of that was adding Jay Graham to the staff, but a lot of that was Pittman as well. Butch runs a zone blocking scheme and there's some question how well Pittman can coach that scheme, but unless that was the case I struggle to see the o-line coach as anything but a downgrade. That's an interesting take on Hiestand. He's ND's run game coordinator and gets a lot of credit for the much improved run game esp as the backs are learning to adapt to the zone scheme. His lineman love him. ND fans tend to see him as an upgrade from Warriner.
  9. It wouldn't surprise me at all if a young superstar on a terrible team didn't focus as much as his manager would like or that his manager, when asked, might be honest. Why is this a story?
  10. And A&M is up to 34 commitments right now. Didn't take long to learn SEC math.
  11. Petrino to W Kentucky. So I guess you could say he nearly landed at Tennessee.
  12. abuck, you only have yourself to blame. There's only so much ssr and I can do.
  13. and a murderer won coach of the year. what has become of the sport i love?? It's like, if you're going to reward these guys, why are you holding down the cyclones over a little bestiality? Everyone gets lonely.
  14. Can't believe a rapist won
  15. they only give each player 1 award. so you figure it out, genius. How is he supposed to know that? haha. this is great. he tried to make a smartass comment and didn't know what he was talking about. no one's ever gotten their ass handed to them for that here. no, no. imb and abuck are always quick to defend the right of people to say stupid [expletive] when they're wrong. fair enough. what I love about these cfb threads is I respond to maybe half the shots at ND (and probably fewer than half of the shots at me). but whenever I do respond, 3 other people will pipe up like I'm the only being an [expletive]. look, I guess I'm sorry ND is in the title hunt for the first time in 20 years. I put up with all your [expletive] for the last decade when they often sucked, so eat it.
  16. they only give each player 1 award. so you figure it out, genius.
  17. Can someone help me out? I like Old Style's idea of using a national award as my profile pic but I can't figure out how to get all 6 of Te'o's awards to fit into the allotted space.
  18. Dave Hart is announcing at 2:30 today that he's happy with Tennessee being nationally irrelevant for 3-5 more years. Hard to be nationally relevant when you're getting turned down left and right (including by one guy who would rather coach at Louisville). Right, we're clearly not nationally relevant now but it should be the goal of the program to reach national relevance. I don't see how hiring a pretty good Big East/MAC coach does that. Even after getting turned down by Gundy and Strong, there were still better options ou there. But we chose the safe route over the route that likely has us winning at a very high level again. Likely? What coach likely has TN winning at a high level soon? I agree that there were riskier options that were more likely to lead to a shot at a division title, but also more likely to blow up in your face. I don't agree that any of the viable candidates were likely to win 10+ games a year at TN in the near future.
  19. I'm pretty sure Butch has been house shopping in Granger the last several months. He's probably trying to figure out how this could have happened.
  20. I'm hearing Hart just offered the job to Te'o hoping he'll accept out of what's become habit this week.
  21. Te'o just took home the camp. I think that's post-season awards 4 for him.
  22. Yes Seems like he could work if we ensured he brought in a good dc and didn't use the 3-3-5. My thinking is he never was given enough time to make the roster fit his offense in Michigan. Rich Rod's recruiting classes were terrible at Michigan. Tiny slot receivers everywhere. We're still recovering. He's a great offensive mind, but that's about it. Really? His 09 class was top 10 and includes most of the good players on the team (Nard, Lewan, Fitz, Gallon Roh). Even his 2010 class had Gardner. The WR weren't great but that's one position where a true freshman can often step right in and contribute. He only really had 2 classes as he was signed in Dec 07 (when Lloyd had mostly recruited the class) and fired in Jan 11. I knew UM fans didn't like the fit of a lot of his players for Hoke's offense but I didn't think there was a question that his 09 class was strong.
  23. Wisconsin fans will have to cross their fingers because Boston [expletive] College has its sights set on Golden. Um, BC hired Steve Addazio 2 days ago.
  24. Kelly did that when he took over, save 1 guy. Not a bad idea when the program needs an overhaul. Who did he keep? Alford. Best recruiter and probably best coach on Weis' staff
