  1. The good news is that (Cy) Young won't throw a no-hitter!
  2. What happened to Fred with his worthless stats or doesn't he work Mondays? :?:
  3. C.Young is 0-2 at home this year. I know that is a small sample size which don't mean much, but he has always done better away with a lifetime record of 9-1 in away games. If he were a left hander and pitching poorly at home, he would be a cinch tonight because that is the type of left hander that beats the Cubs. Fortunately he is right handed and is going up against Maddux who is looking to rebound off his Ariz loss. I am going out on a limb and prediciting an end to the losing streak and a Cubs win tonight before the Giants series.
  4. You know your team is trash if Bellhorn is batting fifth! It is hard to believe this SD team has won 6 in a row!
  5. I'll say no, so he can double switch in the next inning?
  6. Marshall has thrown 90 pitches, should Baker pull him?
  7. That should be it for Peavy at 112 pitches for 6 innings. This SD team is garbage compared to ly team!
  8. What happens if nobody scores? Is there a curfew?
  9. The over and under on this game was 7 1/2 runs. That should have been for the 3 game series!
  10. Park has 121 pitches. If he stays in, Bouchy will be doing his Baker impression! And now you know why they have women giving massages in the dugout!!
  11. And it looks like a pretty tough place to hit in!
  12. Is he still alive? even at 60-70 years old, he may be the Cubs solution to no Left handed BP pitcher. I would say he is probably not among the living because it said he went 15-11 in 1956 at age 42. Let's see, 42+50 =92! But I'll bet if he were, he would have done that in a heart beat. Even as one of the ace pitchers for the Angels, I saw him pitch on a Sunday for expenses in a semi-pro game in the off season. The article said he only had one pitch a fastball starting out, but believe me this man threw some smoke. He must have really had a lot of stamina to pitch batting practice left handed the next day! This LA Angel minor league club he played on was considered by some to be more talented then the parent Cubs team. That is because the pay wasn't millions of dollars in the majors then and these older star players loved playing and didn't want to sit on the bench. There were only eight teams in each league in the majors, so mediocrity wasn't rewarded like it is now because the competition was fierce! I saw the old Cubs team play with Billy Williams, Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, etc. when they played the Dogers in LA and know what talent is because that was a very good team. And yet they could never win the pennant, so I think that makes my point about the type of talent that was out there, don't you? :)
  13. Rusch is trying to show Baker he should have started. Cruz is also paying him back for not keeping him in the roatation did the same and stuck with Estes. BTW, Cruz took Estes spot as he is on DL.
  14. 77 degress, wind out to right at 12 mph Thanks, Fred, I'm always glad to see your posts.
  15. What is the temperature tonight? They leave the roof open when it isn't too hot and the park can be very lively with no wind. My guess if it isn't an oven outside it is open. :D
  16. I tried to find the pitcher that was in the PCL that was ambidextrous, but can't remember his name and stumbled across this article on http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com. (I saw Red Lynn pitch when he was with the LA Angels in the PCL in 1946-47-48. They were a Cubs AAA farm team then. That is when I wanted to be a ball player because they had characters like him and all had a lot of fun. It says he was ambidextrous, but didn't pitch in a game both ways.) "The Angels had outstanding pitching. None of the seven pitchers who worked more than 100 innings had an ERA higher than 3.08. The big winner was Japhet Monroe (Red) Lynn, 21-8, 2.47 who led the PCL in victories. He won his first nine decisions of the season. Lynn, a 29-year-old Texas-born right-hander, was in his second year with Los Angeles. He was signed by the Cardinals in 1934. He once told The Sporting News, “I was a real yokel when it came to pitching. In my first game, when the catcher held down one finger, I thought he wanted me to hold the ball with one finger. I didn’t know I was supposed to pitch a fast ball, which happened to be my only pitch. So I held the ball with one finger and it sailed over the catcher’s head. When he held down two fingers (for a curve) I put two fingers on the ball. I was really dumb.” Red caught on pretty fast and had winning seasons in his first three years in pro ball. In 1937 for Jacksonville, TX, he had a 32-13, 2.65 record with 233 strikeouts, led all of professional baseball in wins and led the East Texas League in ERA, games pitched (56), innings pitched (340) - and walks (143). He jumped all the way to Columbus (American Association) in 1938 and reached the majors with Detroit in 1939. He was traded to the Giants early in the season and remained with New York through 1940. He pitched for the Giants’ Jersey City club in 1941 and then was acquired by Los Angeles. In 1944 he was promoted to the Cubs and was in the service in 1945. Lynn pitched for the Angels again, winning 17, 16 and 19 games in 1946-47-48. He was traded to Portland in 1949, and by the Beavers to Hollywood in 1952. Altogether he pitched in the PCL for ten years. He last played for Bakersfield and Salt Lake (Pioneer) in 1956, going 15-11 at the age of 42. Lynn had a winning major league record of 10-8, 3.96 and in the minors he was 244-191, 3.64. During off-seasons he was, at various times, a professional boxer, a wrestler, a rodeo cowboy and a railroad brakeman. HE WAS AMBIDEXTROUS, BUT NEVER PITCHED LEFT-HANDED IN A GAME. HOWEVER, SOMETIMES ON THE DAY AFTER HE PITCHED, HE WOULD THROW BATTING PRACTICE LEFT-HANDED!
  17. His voice sounds just like Kermit the Frog. I never cared for him either. He always sounds like he hasn't blown his nose in a month!
  18. Can they still use the ball? :( Lucky it hit him in the head or he might have gotten hurt!!! :D (There are 3 photos of him on Yahoo. mlb, but I don't know how to link to them.)
  19. "Beaning" used to mean hitting in the head which I would be opposed to also. But I am not opposed to pitchers throwing inside and hitting a batter if they lean over the plate or stand and admire the ball they hit out the next time they bat. That is the way baseball has been played as no one should have any unfair advantage or be shown up.
  20. I agree with your astute observation about Stone. I thought Chip and Steve did a pretty good job together until they got into that issue. Chip might have been more accurate with his "there's a long drive" call that doesn't go out if they had announced from the bleachers!
  21. He just got hit in the hand by Jake Peavy the day before and the way he acted I thought he would be out for a while. The SF announcers thought he had hurt his pinkie finger, but the construction worker gloves he had on apparently protected him. (Babe Ruth didn't have all the armor and protection he has, in fact they didn't have batting helmets in those days and buzzing a guy after he hit a home run was part of the game!) I very am surprised he isn't hit more often the way he crowds the plate but pitching inside has gone the way of everyone dressing the same/(uniform). The good news is the Giants have lost ALL four games he has homered in this year. The only one that almost made a difference was the one he hit off Wagner to tie the score and send the game into extra innings which they lost. If and when he passes Ruth's record on the road, I hope he gets loudly booed like he deserves. Someone said he is jealous of Ruth because he hit homeruns eating hot dogs and he had to do it using a needle!
  22. How about the "Schwab"? He may not know fundamentals, but he WILL know the names and past history of everybody on the team!
