  1. Len said during the broadcast that it hasn't happened since the '90s...the 1890s. Crazy, huh?
  2. While ordinarily facing Peavy should be considered an automatic loss (Webb and Santana are the only other pitchers I feel that way about), with Lilly's improvement against a light hitting Padres team, we might be able to win a close one ala the Lilly-Haren game last week. Keep it low scoring and close and who knows? Not getting my hopes up, but if Lilly pitches well, it's not the automatic loss we are all fearing.
  3. Thought about putting it in the Cuban thread, but decided it needed its own. Feel free to merge if needed. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080513&content_id=2691506&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc Wrigley will now be packaged with the Cubs. So how does this change things? Or does it?
  4. Pat Forde has an article on ESPN saying that if there was any justice in the world that USC would at least be threatened with the death penalty. He doesn't believe, and neither do I, that USC and Floyd were oblivious to this. That, and the whole football scandals with Bush and Jarrett, he thinks justify it. Much as I loathe USC, the death penalty? Yikes. SMU still hasn't recovered from it.
  5. I'm in complete agreement. It's disappointing, but I feel D'Antoni is making a huge mistake taking the money and going to New York. Really, Jamal Crawford is their only player that fits that system, and they are in bad shape. The only way he succeeds there is if New York is patient with him until he gets the players in (which won't happen because it's New York). I'm upset at the Bulls because this seemed like something that should have happened, but again, not all is lost right now. Let's see who the hire is first.
  6. Apparently, the Yankees were able to dig up the jersey. Boy, I hate Hal Steinbrenner. I was generally ok with George, from a public perspective, but his sons really seem like classy individuals.
  7. Any idea why he left NO after just 1 year as HC? Seems odd to me that you would go to an asst. job after being a head coach for only a year and be considered a viable candidate for a pretty good job in a big time conference. I'm not quite sure why he left NO, but apparently he's been on the map for some time as a recruiter. So far he's said all the right things, so I'm giving him a chance. One advantage though is that the team shouldn't be racked with transfers/NBA defections/regime change issues. To be perfectly honest, I always thought Crean to be a great motivator and teacher, but just a good coach. I have little reason at this point to doubt that Williams can't potentially get to that level.
  8. Brent "Buzz" Williams got the Marquette job. Just announced through school e-mail. Apparently he's a great recruiter, so we'll see how this goes. Certainly not a name, but he's young at 35.
  9. Would they consider Majerus? I know he just got to St. Louis but I would have to think he'd take it if offered. Majerus was the first name that immediately popped into my mind. Here's an interesting thought that Forde at ESPN pondered about. Bruce Weber to Marquette. Apparently Weber is from Milwaukee and a UWM grad. As a Marquette student, I'm not sure how I feel about it. Thoughts?
  10. OK, so Marquette guy here with some thoughts: Crean's a good hire, though his never recruiting big men is still an issue. He does coach defense mercilessly with the "strip-steal." So Indiana made out pretty well I guess, though I'm still shocked that he'd leave. So now that Marquette's job is open, who goes there? Thoughts?
  11. While I'm not happy about it, I think, as far as the landmark status, that any potential corporate buyer would treat Wrigley as Macy's has with Marshall's downtown. Most people still call it Marshall's, and they haven't changed any of the plaques or anything. It's just a Macy's inside. I'm hopeful they do something comparable.
  12. While I am adamantly opposed to a name change (obviously), a part of me wonders how realistic it is for Zell to sell the naming rights? One can get villainized pretty quick for it. It's not like with Comiskey, where it wasn't the original park. Also, wouldn't selling Wrigley off as another name potentially lower some of its market value A) in general and B) to a prospective buyer?
  13. I can't speak to Roberts since I haven't seen the story, but I don't think Pettitte gets any credit for his "admission." Roberts' admission falls right in line with what Bigbie said Roberts did. I think, while it doesn't look good short term, long term these admissions are for the best. Sounds like Roberts took it, then regretted it. Who knows the truth, but he more than most certainly didn't have to come out with an admission.
  14. The New York Times is reporting that apparently one player was able to keep his name off the list. Mitchell apparently confirmed this: I'll bet his name still gets released.
  15. I seem to remember a funny one about Grace visiting the mound and overhearing a conversation between Zimmer and Sutcliffe. It was really quite good.
  16. The more I listen to DeRosa, the more I like him. He's an absolute class act. If we get Roberts and Fukudome, I hope he plays RF with Fukudome in CF. Use Pie and others to try and pry away Bedard as well Roberts.
  17. While I knew he was sitting out last season due to a transfer, I forgot Maurice Acker transfered to Marquette from Ball State. I don't know if you were there when he was, but what's his potential? He's doing well in a limited role this year.
  18. Wisconsin is downed by Marquette 81-76 at the Kohl Center, ending the third longest home winning streak in the nation behind Memphis and BYU. Marquette's been playing very strongly of late, especially since that Chaminade scare. Only a four point loss to a highly ranked Duke as a blemish.
  19. I want Fukudome on the team, but it depends on the price. However, hearing Santo try to say his name in a figurative sense would be priceless. Let's see how many times a mistake is made...
  20. What a retardedly good deal for the Bulls that would be. I know. I had to ask myself if I heard correctly. Bulls steal Kobe away, though the Lakers do save face a bit with that deal. Not championship material, but become much stronger defensively for sure. Kings, I don't know.
  21. Sorry if this is repeating, but ESPN just said the proposed though not approved deal is as follows: Bulls get Kobe Bulls trade Gordon, PJ Brown, and Ben Wallace Kings get Gordon and PJ Brown Kings trade Ron Artest Lakers get Artest and Wallace Lakers trade Kobe Anyone else hear this?
  22. Dude you just ruined my day. P.S. Do you go to Marquette? Yes, I do go to Marquette actually. Why? Do you?
  23. Anyone remember when we could have given up Prior and prospects for Tejeda and Bedard? Makes me sad to remember it.
  24. I was talking with my friend from UF over the weekend, and she was talking about Matt LaPorta. Apparently, he was a surprisingly humble college athlete. Shame he's a Brewer. Would love to have him in our system.
  25. I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that they had hired the White Sox groundskeeper to do the job (he previously did Fenway among others). I was under the assumption that he was going to work on the field this winter, but haven't heard anything since.
