There is a thing as "timely" hitting, but it's not something that can be predicted or expected. The problem with this team for years is not a lack of timely hitting, it's not getting enough guys on base in front of the guys who are consistently good hitters. I never said it should be predicted or expected (esp not with the Cubs). I merely put it as one of the key factors that you need to win a game. Starting pitching, timely hitting, and bullpen. If you get any 2 of those during a game, you'll likely be in a good position to win that game. Lately the Cubs have only been getting one of those three at a time.

This isn't about demanding certain things from the hitters. I'm not suggesting that our players suck because they can't hit in a timely fashion. I'm merely saying that we're losing some games because we don't get the hits when we need to. I'm not blaming the players for this necessarily. It's just one of those things that hasn't been going our way lately. That's all. Alot of timely hitting is just luck. We've been terribly unlucky so far this season. Again, not blaming the players for it....except Izturis, he's just awful. Am I the only person here who has heard the term "timely hitting"? I've heard that from every coach since little league it seems.

You need good hitting. I consider that the same thing as timely hitting. There could be a team full of .300 batters but if they don't get hits when it matters then they won't win games. You could have three singles in a row then three pop ups in a row, so those three hits were pretty much pointless. It's hitting when it matters that is important.

Batting average is worthless. They had a pretty good one in 2006 or 2005 and it did nothing for them. 17th in average last year. 18th in average was the Phillies, and they scored 149 more runs than us. An example of timely hitting, of which the Cubs have rarely had any. That's not an example of timely hitting. That's an example of a team that had a really high OBP and a really high SLG. The Cubs may or may not take advantage of their opportunities, the biggest problem is they don't give themselves enough opportunities. I'll agree with that.

Thing is, you have to have 2 of 3 things to consistently win games: good starting pitching, timely hitting, and good bullpen work. Usually any two of those three things will put you in a good position to win a ball game. This season the Cubs seem to have great starting pitching, crappy hitting, crappy bullpen or poor starting pitching, good hitting, crappy bullpen. Yesterday we had good starting pitching and timely hitting at the same time.

It seems like any time we absolutely need a run we have some scrub up there like Lenny Harris or Cesar Izturis to weakly ground out or our free swinging K machine happens to be up there.

If they score all the runs in the world, the timing won't matter at all. You know what I meant.

We can score all the runs we want, but if they aren't timely i.e. when we need them, then all the runs in the world won't matter.

I don't think we should really worry that he's going to somehow not be able to play SS adequately. The guy played SS his entire life except the past couple of seasons in the minors. He'll do fine.

I would hope he would make those plays. He really did not have to range into the hole to make a play. Everything was hit right at him. Im still not that confident with him at ss. Are you confident with Cesar Izhoribble at SS? Not trying to pick on you directly dude, but I really can't stand the philosophy of "good" defense making up for a pathetic bat...I really can't. Im confident with Izzy making the defensive plays at the ss position. However, im not confident with him swinging the bat. I value defense pretty high on a baseball team. The ss position, in my opinion, is a very demanding spot on the field that needs to be filled by someone who fields the ball consistently. Can Theriot be that guy? We will find out. He is athletic enough to play it, but can he play consistently like Izturis has shown he can? When has Izturis shown that? He's been injury prone for awhile. In addition to his horrible bat and recently spotty D, he's a liability to go down at any given time for an extended period. He's not as injury prone as Wood, but expecting him to miss at least 40-50 games a year is not unrealistic. I don't understand why we think he can be a reliable everyday shortstop. He has had half of one good season, that was about it. Funny what a gold glove will do for you.

Doesn't hurt me at all because I know what I heard 4 years ago. If he's a scout then maybe he can explain to me what two of his compatriots must've meant when they told me that they equate SEC and Pac-10 baseball to AA. FWIW I've also heard professional scouts equate it to High A.

They are amateurs, so what's the point of defending them against being called amateurish? It was the disparaging way in which they were talked about which I didn't like. College baseball players, especially the ones in the tougher conferences, work extremely hard and have a tremendous amount of athleticism. BUT, after a three page derail, I'd like to see college shift to wooden bats from purely a safety standpoint. I remember our coach saying that he didn't think they'd ever go back to wood bats because having aluminum bats is really conducive to schools that don't have that much money for their baseball programs. Given the amount of games that are played in a college season, the average team would go through a ton of bats. Whereas the team can just buy 10 bats or so at the start of the season that should last them till the end.

This is absurd, and I'm tired of defending it. Yet I bet you keep doing it. What was the point of what the scouts said, then? Was there a point to any of this or was it just more "I played baseball in college" stuff? The whole point was that I was defending college baseball from being labeled as amateurish and comical by some on this board who even admitted they had never even seen a college game. The only relevance to my having played is my ability to have heard scouts equate certain college conference players to minor leaguers.

His word over mine huh? The fact that he "knows" a scout up against the fact that I actually played in that conference and actually got to talk to scouts quite frequently ABOUT the minors and ABOUT my conference. But hey, whatever makes YOU feel better.

Well it's just ridiculous really. All I'm saying is what I've heard from several scouts, straight for their mouths, before or after games when they'd talk to us back when I played. That's all.

I know some scouts (one I know very well). :lol: Yes, haha, hoho. No doubt he's had extensive conversations with them about how certain college conferences translate their talent to the professional level.
