James isn't proposing that you put names in a bag and draw them randomly. What he's refuting is the old school notion that you need a speedy leadoff hitter, all or nothing #4 hitter, etc. So your saying you would want Ty Cobb hitting 4th? Lol. yeah definitely wouldn't want a cleanup hitter who finished top 5 in SLG% 15 times Led the league in slugging 8 times, second 3 times, and third 3 times. Yeah I think he is the best baseball player of all time. Ruth was better I think.

That conversation was the best thing to come from yesterday's game. After he was hit by a pitch by Boston pitcher Carl Mays (who later caused the death of Ray Chapman from a HBP), Ty Cobb threw his bat at Mays which caused a huge reaction from the Sox fans. I understand where you're coming from. But theres a difference between sounding nervous and sounding completely unintelligent. He sounds more like the second. he plays baseball, doesn't need to be intelligent exactly. Most of the best players I've ever known had the personality of a rock.

why's that? And I would definitely participate in the debate/discussion of the players... I used to just read through the Baseball Encyclopedia as a kid. The history of baseball, and comparing of different players, is really fascinating to me. Should definitely do it.
