  1. I'll agree with you that the casual fan is probably pissed off because of records being broken in part because of PED's, but regardless of records, I still care. I don't want the Cubs to lose or win in part because of a criminal act, which abusing steroids IS.
  2. I remember back in like 1999 going to batting practice before a Rockies game at Coors. It was like dodging bullets at Gettysburg or something. Those things REAAAALLLLY shot out of there back before the humidified balls or whatever.
  3. That's completely wrong. The era in which it was created and the fact that the most fundamental aspects of the game haven't changed in 160 years has everything to do with it. The most important example of this is the lack of a game clock. This "old timey" aspect of the game is what creates the most drama, perhaps more than any other sport. In baseball there is no way to run out the clock against an opponent, so to speak; the other team will always get their chance to make a comeback, no matter what. In football and basketball, there is also a play clock, so we essentially know when some dramatic action is about to occur. The beauty of baseball, to me, is in its untimed inaction i.e. the pitcher standing on the mound with the ball, etc. The drama that exists during those suspenseful moments is perhaps greater than in any other sport.
  4. What it's capable of?? Like what? I suppose getting in the way of even MORE rampant abuse of illegal substances....which aren't just illegal in baseball, but illegal in the "real world" as well. Don't any of you realize that the "Old-Timeyness" is what separates the game from other sports and makes it special?
  5. I like your old sig pic....
  6. Not all of us are steroid apologists.
  7. Should this be in Transactions?
  8.   Had to take a screenshot because I'm sure it'll be the only time I'll ever see it: http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/8543/olemisspointsjg8.jpg http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/ncaa/men/stats/team/

  11. ha. i hate mcgwire too, especially for his "not gonna talk about the past" nonsense at congress. but he's a hall of famer, unfortunately. I don't think McGwire is as damned as Raffy "finger pointer" Palmeiro. Raffy certainly had the quietest 500 hr, 3000 hit career in history.
  12. I suppose that makes sense. OK, y'all have swayed me. I guess now I'll just have to hate him for being a Turdbird and a juicer.

  14. OK, that is helping to convince me a bit more. However, could someone metrically inclined explain to me why someone like McGwire with such a good eqa, etc, would have such a low .BA.
  15. That's why he struck out in 25% of his AB's.... yes yes, I know he walked out alot, but of course that totally had to do with his batting eye, not pitchers pitching around him or anything. would you have voted reggie jackson in? Maybe, but only because of the era he played in. I've never liked him at all though, because I view him as just a pure slugger, same as Big Mac.
  16. That's why he struck out in 25% of his AB's.... yes yes, I know he walked out alot, but of course that totally had to do with his batting eye, not pitchers pitching around him or anything.
  17. I understand your point here and it's very valid, but I guess I like my baseballer's to at least have 2 of the 5 tools. McGwire had power. The only other tool he came close to possessing was a good glove. Ah, c'mon now. Other than Foxx and Aaron's similar OPS+, I don't see it.
  18. I wouldn't vote for Big Mac even if he hadn't been a juicer. He's about as one dimensional a position player as they come.
  19. Not sure why Blyleven isn't getting more love. 287 wins (26th all time, 11th all time for pitchers starting their careers after 1950), 60 shutouts (9th all time), 3701k (5th all time), 242 complete games (6th all time after 1950), 3.31 ERA. 5-1 with a 2.47 ERA and a CG in 6 games started in the Postseason.
  20. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071125&content_id=2307150&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb You can vote in the poll here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=45551 My vote would go toward Dawson and Blyleven
  21. Who do you think should get a vote this year?
  22. should be "knees" plural, both my knees are whack and I'm 6'2, 200 lbs... I'm not a tub.
  23. Daniel looked like an NFL caliber QB to me. He reminded me a good bit of the fella in my avatar. And did Kansas' O-line give up on that last play or what. Those guys should be forced to run a gauntlet or something.
  24. This one shows historical salaries....imagine having a 150+ RBI guy like Lou Gehrig for only 8,000 bucks! :-) http://bluestreak.pbwiki.com/f/salaries.xls
