    No one left standing is claiming this, so I can't believe it either. I'm just saying its faster...not more practical or something that should be instituted in little league camps. I wasn't responding to your posts at all. It was just a general thought.

    yeah but when people talk about great home runs, that one often gets omitted. there's the shot heard round the world, ruth's called shot, maris' 61st, carlton fisk... hell i think people talk about bernie carbo more than the maz homer. but the maz homer was the only game 7 walkoff in world series history, and it was hit by a guy who had little power, playing at a cavernous ballpark. plus it marked a it probably should be regarded as the most dramatic hit in the history of the game, but for some reason it often gets overlooked. Agree with you Truffle. What Maz did IS the ultimate in baseball. And as far as Mazeroski being unworthy for the hall of fame....well, I won't argue that he's in the bottom third of HOFers, but there are certainly LOTS of HOFers that are more unworthy than Maz.

    I still just can't believe that this is even a question. Sliding into first is just BAD on so many levels that any fractional time saved isn't worth it.

    Mel Ott was a fine player, but owes his HOF status TO the Polo Grounds. It's too bad they don't have road splits from make then because I'd LOVE to see how often he abused that 257 foot right field fence.

    Mays was sprinting as fast as he could to get to that ball. He couldn't have been but 10 feet from the outfield wall, which was like 500 feet from home plate. I used to think it was overrated as well until I watched it more closely keeping in mind the dimensions.     How? I accept the fact that my study proved a lot but there could have been some possible errors. But there is no reason for me to believe that every trial I ran was false. This is a milestone. I don't think I've ever agreed 100% with anything IMB! has ever said.

    .....which is what, 90% of sliding? I think 90% of sliding is getting to the bag as fast as possible without going past the bag. I suppose it could be viewed in that way. With regards to sliding specifically, I consider "stopping without going past the bag" and "avoiding the tag" to basically be one in the same.

    Indeed. This is sort of an odd thing to try and explain, but the way you run to first is different than the way you run to other bases. When you are running to the other bases, you are running with the knowledge that you might have to slide and this knowledge changes your stride because of timing issues, whereas when you are running to first you are outright sprinting.

    We still have him? I've basically written Guzman off a long time ago, even though I probably shouldn't have. He's only pitched a total of 244 innings in the past 4 seasons combined.

    I'm not trying to sound like a jerk, but that's just preposterous. Sliding is safer than running? Absolutely not. 75% of my aches and pains from playing the game came from sliding.

    Has no one yet brought up that the main reason you slide in baseball (in general) is to avoid a tag? Sliding isn't preferable. It hurts/isn't comfortable and nearly always increases the risk of injury. Are you suggesting that people should slide into first everytime there is a play there?

    Maybe if you're measuring 1600 meter times, but when you're talking about fraction of second differences like sliding into first v. running through, your experiment doesn't have much value. I think it does when you have 50 total trials and only 2 times out of those 50 it came up in a different order than feet first, head first, run through. How could I consistently have timer errors where sliding is faster? When did you do this trial and who did you convince to slide into first for you dozens of times?

    ....where to begin.... First, you see more people get hurt running through first because it is something that happens tons of times in a single game. Seeing someone sliding into first is something that occurs very rarely. Second, sliding into first is very different from sliding into other bases. I don't know if this is going to make any sense, but when you are running to first, you are sprinting, and the decision to slide into first is done very quickly without forethought. There is also more room to slide with other bases. Third, sliding into first is dangerous for the runner and for the fielder. When a play is about to occur at other bases, the fielders are prepared for the impact and their bodies are more loose. First basemen aren't expecting a player to slide into them and therefore their body is more locked up than other fielders.

    Yes definitely. Not sure about Lyons, but definitely Collins needs to be in there. Jimmie Foxx should beat Reggie Jackson and I'd replace Catfish with Gettysburg Eddie. But I'd leave Eckersley. Absolutely. Where the hell did Stottlemyre ever get them? Replace Chipper with Mathews (as of now), but I'd leave Smoltz. Hell no. I'd leave Klein but replace Roberts with Alexander. Leave Pujols, but I'd replace Brock with Hornsby. (How was Rogers not on there in the first place, wth?) Naw, but the fact that Mathewson isn't already on there is ludicrous. I'd replace Ott with Mathewson. Mel was a good player but benefited greatly from a right field fence that was 257 feet away...literally.

    Can someone tell me the advantage of having Willitis over Pie? Looks like Willitis has a higher OBP than Pie and more speed, but Pie has more power and is much younger.
