  1. Do you the story about Grantland Rice and the Ty Cobb self-promotion letters? As a sports journalist, you'd probably get a kick out of it. When Cobb was 17 and in the minor leagues, Rice kept getting dozens of letters a month from "interested fans" and "faithful readers" who signed themselves as Jackson, Brown, Kelly, or Jones, etc. These letters, all penned in unique styles ranging from slanting, scrawled, Spencerian, and widelooped, all said things like "Keep your eye on Ty Cobb..he is one of the finest hitters I've ever seen." "Watch Cobb of Anniston, he is sure to be a sensation. "Have you seen Ty Cobb play ball yet? He is the fastest runner I've ever seen." Rice finally wrote a column stating "there is a young man named Cobb currently playing who shows an unusual amount of talent." Because Rice commanded such respect, the Tigers and several other clubs sent scouts down to look at him. It wasn't until 1951 that Cobb revealed to Rice that the dozens of letters had all been written by him.
  2. That's ridiculous.
  3. Other than what I read on FJM, I haven't read a baseball article from a sports columnist from a newspaper in a long, long time. I have no idea what Mariotti's writings are like. Why the hatred?
  4. During the game chat tonight, TruffleShuffle and myself (as the resident Baseball History nerds) came up with an All-Douchebag Team. To qualify they obviously had to be big D-bags and also be very, very good players as well. Manager: John McGraw http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/dbag10.jpg Pitcher: Roger Clemens http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/dbag1.jpg Catcher: Thurman Munson http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/dbag2.jpg 1st Base: Cap Anson http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/dbag3.jpg 2nd Base: Rogers Hornsby http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/dbag4.jpg 3rd Base: Mike Schmidt http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/dbag5.jpg Shortstop: Maury Wills http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/dbag6.jpg Left Field: Barry Bonds http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/dbag7.jpg Center Field: Ty Cobb http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/dbag8-1.jpg Right Field: Reggie Jackson http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/dbag9.jpg Utility Player: Pete Rose http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/dbag11.jpg

  18. It depends on what Payton wants to do with him. Technically Patten, Henderson, and Terrance Copper are ahead of him on the depth chart. Patten is reliable but old, Henderson is fast as lightning but drops half the balls thrown to him, and Copper is just meh. So, I'd like to think that Payton will go to Meachem. Hell, the Saints spent a first round pick on the guy, so they should at least try. I'd probably wait and see what he does (or if he is even used) in the game against the 'Skins this weekend. If he does well, then I'd scoop him up in a heartbeat, given how often Brees throws the ball.
  19. http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jC3hdkrPxaYPdMT6zZh9QarCLq_wD9343RO80 Sounds like it is time for Robert Meachem to step up and fill his role on the Saints. He had a pretty good preseason with 10 catches for 217 yards. Step up!
  20. This cubs team is FUBAR right now
  21. And if he hadn't bobbled he would have been out by a mile. You have to hold Soto there. Ankiel threw a guy out from the warning track this year!

  24. Al Davis is starting to devolve into a Gollum-like creature.
