exactly. The Rockies would like some pitching, I think. And I'd much rather have Seth Smith than Spilly. They're obsessed right now with playing Carlos Gonzalez (acquired in the Holliday trade) even though he is absolutely dreadful at the major league level. He has K'd 21 times in 62 AB's. Lots of Rockies fans around here are pretty upset that Tracy is giving Gonzo so much more playing time over Smith who has proven he can handle ML pitching. Smith is a lefty bat, with good speed, who so far is: .289/.409/.496, 133 OPS+ with 6 HR, 6 doubles, and 2 triples in 135 AB's. If Milton had those numbers right now I'd be jumping for joy. Although, I'm not really sure how much the Cubs need another OF right now.

I really dont get this. of all the things my neighbor has said about him, none of it had to do with any war. well that's not surprising. I wouldn't expect it to come up immediately. However, 1945 was obviously one of the most important years in world history and Pafko was a massive part of the Cubs last pennant that year. 1945 will usually bring up an image of the war the same way 2001 makes one think of 9/11. Furthermore, most all of that 1945 Cubs team were replacement players while the Cubs regulars were off serving in the military. So it's not like some gigantic leap of intellect to connect the 1945 Cubs with WWII.

I think you could turn any conversation into a US history conversation. Not necessarily, but Andy Pafko will forever be linked with the War because he was on the last Cubs pennant team in 1945. In fact, the book he wrote the foreward to is titled "The Wartime Cubs and the Pennant of 1945"

That's awesome! I've always wondered why athletic young men like Pafko who were in the early 20's during the war era didn't serve. I do know that hundreds of baseball players were given draft exemptions at the insistence of Roosevelt who wanted baseball to continue throughout the war for morale purposes.

Can you think of another sport where the head coach wear's the same uni as the players? Baseball is weird like that. With the notable exception of Conrad McGillicudy, eh? Connie Mack never wore a uni as well. Crap, I think I just figured out why managers wear uni's in baseball. Not sure why I hadn't thought of it before. But when I was writing out Connie Mack's name, my mind went to the other greatest manager ever, John McGraw. John McGraw was a damn good player and first became manager while he was still a player. The same goes for many great players who were also managers back in those days, such as Cap Anson, Tris Speaker, etc. Baseball managers wear uni's because most managers back in the day were ALSO on the roster as players. Duh.
