  1. I just realized that some of the earlier photos I posted in this thread weren't able to be seen. So I'll repost those. These are scans from a 1916 edition of Baseball Magazine:
  2. It doesn't matter what your musical tastes are. Elvis is much more of a cult icon than MJ. Think of all the merchandise you see that has Elvis on it, etc. He also had a bigger fanbase as well because of the different genre that he recorded under. I'd have to think that Elvis also had more of an influential impact on music. All of the early rock bands like The Beatles, Stones, etc were influenced by his stardom. There's a famous story that John Lennon always told about going to see an Elvis movie when he was 14 or 15 and going "oh my god...THAT would be a good job!" and thus getting into music hard and heavy because of Elvis. My choice is not to denigrate MJ's impact at all, because I think he was massively influential and certainly is among the biggest superstars in modern music history, right alongside Elvis and The Beatles. Personally, I'm not an Elvis fan and have only ever owned his greatest hits, however, I just think the cultural impact that Elvis had on the country is hard to even come close to measuring.
  3. Very good question. Gonna have to go with Elvis. When he came on the scene he was ENTIRELY unique for the time. His impact on the culture is hard to measure, but suffice it to say it was massive. He was the first real superstar of modern music. I think Elvis also had a broader fanbase throughout his career. Not only was he a Rock'n'Roll guy, but he was also liked in the Country music community (he's in the Country Music Hall of Fame) and in the Gospel community as well.
  4. That certainly is interesting. Easy to see why he didn't last: .218/.282/.249 Also, I found a photo of Foxx as a pitcher with the Phils: http://img240.imageshack.us/img240/5629/jimmiefoxxwiththephilli.jpg
  5. That is ghastly.

  9. That's obvious. The only reason Smith doesnt start in LF is because the dummies in the front office feel they have to at least try and play Carlos Gonzalez, who they got in the Holliday trade. Everyone around here knows what is up and is sick of it. They dont understand why the Rox won't put their best players in the field. Cargo is abysmal. Smith on the other hand, is not. .284/.400/.482, 121 AB's, 6 HR, 6 2B, 2 3B, 20 RBI, 28 walks. thats not bad at all given the limited AB's. You're right. Instead of trying to win, they're trying to prove that they won the Matt Holliday trade. you're missing the point. he just wants you to say, "hey seth smith went to ole miss. didn't YOU go to ole miss too???" nice burn abuck. but anyways, the smith v. cargo thing is one of the bigger issues that fans have with the current rockies leadership right now (and they could care less about where he went to school). you see plenty of "free smith" signs in coors and the boos that Cargo gets would make bonds feel bad. but that is all irrelevant to you because the only thing that matters to you is to mock people on this board. so keep it up, you're doing a great job.

  11. Colorado should try and get him. I know there has been some indications around here that the Rox front office might actually be buyers this year. Give them Seth Smith and some other top prospects could get it done.
  12. Stuck in an airport so I needed a good way to pass twenty minutes. I got 133 out of 232. I only got about 6 of the 20 negro league players on the list. A bunch of the 19th century players were a complete loss for me as well.
  13. no kidding
  14. ya, tmz has pics of them: http://photos.tmz.com/galleries/steve_mcnair_and_sahel_kazemi#46170
  15. This is a terrific match. Roddick has really impressed me. I didn't think he'd be able to hang with Roger.
  16. this is really sad for folks in my home state. Coming from a historically black college like Alcorn and doing the things he did, he was a great inspiration to A LOT of people in the state. Thinking of him reminds me of these ads that were going around last year:
  17. boo birds going to explode in 3..2...
  18. not even close :-) viewtopic.php?f=29&t=49159
  19. ok, now this a random ass discovery. I was looking at Jimmie Foxx's page and saw that in 1945, his final year in the bigs he apparently PITCHED a little bit, and was GOOD. 1-0, 22 IP, 10 K's, 13 hits, 1.59 ERA how weird
  20. omg, this Bob Rohrman guy should be executed
  21. lol that's like Albert Belle getting 37 million over three years from the orioles after he retired.
  22. what the hell happened to Cole Hamels? he sucks
