  1. Hmm I am trying this out for the first time. It's definitely easier than Safari.
  2. Guy had appendicitis and had to have his appendix removed today. Likely shutdown for the rest of season.
  3. love that group
  4. Ok I guess my sarcasm detector was off today
  5. Is that a list of who you want or who you think it is gonna be because I wouldn't want most of them. Phillips was a terrible GM. With his penchant for terrible contracts he'd be Hendry-lite. Ed Wade did ok setting the Phils up in the early 00's but the Astros are total bottom feeders under him. Littlefield was a bafoon with the Pirates. MacPhail and Ric would be acceptable. biggest whoosh ever? Apparently so. Maybe you should let me in on what's funny.

  7. wonder if Stan Kasten wants a job?
  8. give them some torches and pitchforks
  9. Hendry doing his best Mike Schmidt impersonation at his press conference.
  10. I was just about to post something similar. Wonder if this means Sandberg will be back in the mix. I think it's pretty well known that Sandberg and Hendry certainly weren't in the same clique.
  11. oh, I forgot, this one is obligatory as well http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/kid21.gif

  13. A person can't know everything :-)
  14. I'm aware of that and I'm aware that he is an uber-asset run creator for any baseball team. He's definitely someone I'd want on my team. However, a very good career OBP doesn't get you in the HOF, but a sexy HR total will. That's his only solid stat that causes him to be in the conversation. Yes, but then what was the point of the 40+ a season breakdown? How many of those 35 other hitters have been as good as or better than Thome? How does that detract from the main point in his favor, which is the cumulative total? Because it just shows what an offensive era he lived in. HR's weren't exceptionally hard to come by in his era. Just like how it didn't stand out as much in 1910 if your ERA after 300 innings was below 2.50. As far as the other guys go on that 40+ HR list, I'd probably take a third of them as being as good or better than Thome. Griffey, A-Rod, Bonds, Bagwell, Manny, Sosa, Piazza, Helton, Palmeiro, Pujols, Frank Thomas, Giambi, Chipper Jones, Beltran. fwiw, the 16 other guys who hit 40+ while Killebrew played were: Ernie Banks, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Eddie Matthews, Rocky Colavito, Orlando Cepeda, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Willie McCovey, Dick Stuart, Yaz, Frank Howard, Reggie Jackson, Johnny Bench, Billy Williams, and some guy I've never of named Rico Petrocelli. 11 of those 16 guys are Hall of Famers.

  16. Ummm, so what was the potentially decent part? And I use Killebrew because he's the closest equivalent to what Thome is IMO. Just about everybody else with 500+ HR that is in the HOF contributed in other ways or have other exemplary career stats other than their HR total. So if we are going to put someone in the HOF solely because of their HR total, then their era certainly matters. Just like today if hypothetically a modern pitcher pitched 3000+ innings and had a 2.30 ERA for his career, well then surely we'd imagine that guy would be good enough to be in the HOF. And I didn't fawn over Killebrew, personally I don't like one dimensional ballplayers like him, I was just making the case that in his own time he was considered a top tier player of his day as evidenced by finishing in the Top 5 in the MVP voting six times (and winning one) and his 11 All Star games out of his 16 full seasons. I don't think Thome has ever been in that category. Bottom line is that the only solid stat that gets Thome even in the conversation for the HOF is his HR total. So why not take his era into effect when looking at his ONE notable stat.
  17. And that's why I'm starting to change my mind about Thome. Era's matter a great deal. It's why guys who if they had these stats today would be no doubt HOFers such as Ed Reulbach (a Cubby!) who had a 2.28 ERA in 2200 innings or Doc White with a 2.39 ERA in 3000+ innings aren't in the HOF. Regarding era's, Thome hit over 40 homers in six seasons. In those six seasons, that feat was accomplished 57 times by 36 different players. Killebrew hit 40+ in eight seasons. In those eight seasons, it was accomplished 33 times but by only 16 different players. In Thome's top three HR seasons, 27 times people hit over 40. In Killebrew's top three HR seasons, it only happened 9 times. Killebrew was a "great" for his era as a power hitter. He was a special player for his time and was a household name as a result. Thome just doesn't stand out enough to be a "great" of his era. Again, I'm a "small hall" (hate that cutesy term) guy. If I were like some of you and my friends who advocate for a wider hall then I'd definitely want Thome in there. But the fact is that he's only being talked about for the hall because he compiled stats the last few years and reached some milestones. The guy was only in the top 5 MVP voting ONE TIME. He was only voted to the All-Star game 5 times in 21 years. And yes, yes, I know that All Star games and other awards are just popularity contests, but they do matter to a degree in regards to the HOF. Then you look at how he really didn't contribute defensively or on the basepaths and then factor in the whole DH thing (which I know most of you don't want to hold against him but I will), and I just don't think he's a HOFer. Initially I was all aboard that bandwagon but I've jumped off the more I look at it and the more I'm starting to think about what I want out of the Hall of Fame.
  18. Correct, and a one-dimensional guy who hit most of his 600 HR in an era laughably dominated by power shouldn't be considered as "great" as similarly tooled players like Killebrew who put up their numbers in a pitcher's era.
  19. But that's kind of inconsistent with your earlier views about comparing modern players to guys already in the Hall. If you are all about comparing players, then if an extra 3-4 years helps a modern player get a milestone stat, that's not fair to many guys who played earlier and achieved certain stats without the ability to go DH.
  20. totally disagree with this statement.
  21. For Truffle (concerning an earlier topic)
  22. Miami has a basketball team?
  23. That's bullisht. Why can't you? If a ship is sinking I'm not going to keep pouring more water into it.
  24. This is definitely a Death Penalty case. However, because it's Miami, then who knows?
