Good article but I don't like the argument that I hear so often of "well a guy like Rabbit Maranville is in, so to keep a guy like Player X out is obscene." Just because there are weak HOF candidates already in the hall shouldn't be an excuse to put "Hall of Very Good" players in. I'm a small hall guy, so naturally that argument is flawed to me.

A third of his homers (194) came as a DH. I imagine that may hurt him with some voters. My personal opinion aside, I don't think he is going to be a slam dunk or anything close to it. Bagwell was a similar, if not a better, player with a more accomplished resume (ROY, MVP) and he only got 41 percent. Granted, the situations are a bit different in that Bagwell doesn't have a magic number that the voters cream over and there was/is probably more PED speculation around Bagwell.

Gotcha. That's generally a correct observation. State is Mississippi's A&M school so they have the School of Agriculture and Forestry, things like that. Ole Miss has the state's Law School, Med School, Pharmacy School, and a top 20 Accounting School. Plus, Starkville is a complete hell hole and is easily the worst SEC home-city. The students are cooler to hang out with though. A lot of spoiled aholes and bitches go to Ole Miss. It's pretty stupid that we even have two SEC schools to begin with and then you throw Southern Miss in there. I think if we had a mega-school like LSU we'd be a perennial contender in most sports. Given that we have a tiny population whose talent is split between three schools, it's pretty impressive that the schools do as well as they do athletically.

i think mississippi state should've been the klansman, but nobody cares about ms state. why? Ole Miss is the one with the embarrassing racial history, not State.

like washington dc? You can swim across a river into Virginia from DC ergo it's not in the Northeast. It's south of the Mason-Dixon. and I've never heard anyone consider DC a "big market".

It's about damned time. It seems as though virtually every team in baseball has produced more elite talent than the Cubs in the past 10 years. We produced Maddux in the mid-late '80's, Grace in the late 80's, and then Wood, Prior, and Zambrano, and it's questionable whether or not any od them are truely elite, although Prior and Wood certainly would have been without the injuries. When Soto first came up I thought he'd be a perennial all-star, now not so much. Marmol is kind of in the same vein. But ya, I hated watching other teams with elite studs coming up. I remember when Tulo came up being so jealous of the Rockies to have a guy like him. Granted, Castro isn't Tulo but at least it seems we finally get to have a true home grown stud. Of course, being that he's a Cub, I'm terrified that something unfortunate might happen with the lad.

impressive, but hey, Ruth and Cobb didn't get 100% of the vote so that Maddux guy doesn't deserve it either!! I swear, I wish there was a one time disclosure of HOF votes so we could see which mugwumps don't vote for Maddog on his first ballot. Those people should be hunted down and then summarily put to death.

haha, that was the year that someone gave Morandini a vote. The game really was so different back then. 15 guys in the NL alone with 100+ RBI's. 9 with 120+.
