I know some guys vote early, but there is still games to be played that will figure into the Heisman race. Texas can lay and egg against Nebraska and the winner of the Fla/Ala game could help their teams candidate pass McCoy up.

Winston, of course, is the player who was reinstated this season after spending 180 days in jail this past summer for a assault and battery charge. He was involved in a fight last year in which a MSU hockey player was seriously injured. Sounds like Dantonio made a good decision bringing him back on the team. How do you really judge those things though? It looks bad because he had another issue. If he would have not gotten in trouble again and got his degree Dantonio would be applauded for giving him a 2nd chance.

Well that seals it for me, the team with the longest streak of losing seasons in baseball was also going to pay him this much. I am glad Hendry tied him up before he got on the open market.

cubsfan26, I think most people here understand your point. They just think it's wrong. Repeating it will not change too many peoples minds here. If however, you can find a player or two who have done what you are suggesting, that may add some value to your argument.

Move them now or now they are reporting? How is it that nobody picked up on this part of the story before? I wonder if most reporters even knew it was a rule. I didnt until yesterday.

What Mackenzie is talking about is that a team is not allowed to go over the current salary cap with committed contracts the next year. It is possible to extend players because most teams have only 35-45 million committed for the following season. To extend a player or two usually would not over commit that team for the next season. The Hawks currently have 43 M committed to next season. So to extend 2 of the 3 would not be an issue. By signing all three to what looks to be somewhere in the 18 M range would put them over the cap with committed salaries. Anyway it appears that the collective bargaining agreement does not allow this. I think it is going to be interesting to see how the Hawks juggle all of this.

A couple of posters on a Wings site said the same thing, I turns out you cannot go over next years salary cap. This may be the hold up with the signings. Just for those scoring at home if these contracts are true the Hawks will be 5 million over next years cap. That will only be for 16 players You can't go over next year's salary cap this year? But they don't even know what it will be. I guess what it basically says is that a team cannot exceed whatever the current cap is. It is widely thought that next years cap will actually go down also.

Awful? No, the argument is whether he would have been fired in 2009 had Ty not screwed the program. Where he fits on the awesome to awful scale of college coaching is a pretty ridiculous argument to have here. Had I known my statement would set off this firestorm, I may not have made it. The fact that Ty's actions had lasting effects didn't seem controversial. How significant and whether Weis would have been successful enough to survive this year without Ty's work seems like an interesting argument. That Ty's work had some negative impact did not. I think to say that Ty's work doesnt have some sort of residual effect at this point is probably incorrect. But he has had 5 years now and seems to be stagnating instead of improving.

So just to understand, the argument is either that Weis is awful or that Weis is just bad and is still paying for the Willingham years?

Datsyuk, Zetterburg and Lidstrom are making quite a bit more than the Hawks are going to pay for Kane, Toews and Keith. They are also much better and more accomplished. Compare Zetterburg and Lidstrom to Hossa and Campbell and tell me who is cheaper. Lidstrom makes 7 million and Zetts cap hit is a little over 6. Lidstrom in UFA after this season. It has been suggested that he will either retire or come back to the Wings on 1 yr contract basis until he does retire, this is just speculation though. I doubt if he gets anything more than 5 million going forward. I think Toews will be better than Datsyuk and Zetts in a couple of years, I dont think that is true about Kane. I think the one thing in all this discussion that is not debatable is that Campbell's contract is bad and is going to hurt the Hawks one way or another. I think the debate is how the Hawks should pay for it. I think where the Wings have had some players give them a discount is with guys like Holmstrom, Draper, and Maltby. These guys are all real solid veteran role players who could easily get paid more somewhere else.

here is the salary chart for the Hawks. Site also has every team in teh NHL. It is kind of interesting. A Wings suggested that the Hawks may trade Hossa after this season to make everything work. Interesting thought.

If the Hawks make the Cup finals with Huet as their primary goalie, then I can see another team picking up his contract. However, if that is the case are you sure that the Hawks would want to move him? I dont mean to diminish Kane as a player. I am just saying that all these solutions that seem to come up to be able to keep all three of the big RFA's seem to include the idea that losing this player or that player is easily manageable. Take that into account that other players are going to be due significant raises over the next couple of years. I am just saying that maybe the best solution is to not try and fit all three in. Let Kane go, take the draft picks. Resign Keith and keep the depth intact. Last point, not many Hawks fans were upset over the Campbell signing. I remember most thinking he was an important piece. Honestly he is a valuable player, but of course the 7 million is stupid. Point being, just because it makes the fans happy does not mean its the right move.

Is it possible that the previous GM signed Hossa to replace Kane? This may be a reason he was shown the door because the marketing guy that is president of the team wanted to keep Kane.

Prolly, but I much rather not trade Sharp. I think you might see guys Steeg, Skille, Kopecky, Buff, and perhaps even Barker all dealt to make sure the Hawks can keep Kane/Toews/Keith/Hossa and Sharp. But getting Campbell and/or Huet off the cap would go a long way to keeping the core together for a long time. (The latter is a long shot, I know, but one can dream.) No one is taking Campbell or Huet, so that discussion is out of the question. The Hawks are going to have to let Sharp or Buff go anyway, that still isnt going to be enough to keep Keith, Kane and Toews. This is why I think the better move is to keep Keith. Hockey is a 4 line game, being too top heavy will hurt the Hawks in the long run. Especially if their defense is weakened by losing Keith. I also think Kane is a little over rated. He is a good scorer but the rest of his game is average at best.

is there any evidence that if a player strikes out less his production will improve? I may have misread some posts here, but that seems to be the argument without any actual proof. Well, except for trying to make a logical assumption that if a player puts the ball in play some of them will be hits. I didnt see the counter logic that if a player changes his approach to KO less, will his new approach be as productive as he was when he KO'ed more. I guess here is my question. Has there been players who have decreased their KO totals in their prime by a significant margin? If so what was the effect on their overall production? Also, was the change something that was done to actually reduce KO's? or was there some other change(steriods, late development) that also led to reduced KO rates? Just to point out some of the old time arguments my dad makes. His contention is that a player should choke up and shorten his swing with 2 strikes. My counter to that is would you rather have Ryan Howard hitting ground balls or would you rather have him hitting HRs/KOing/BBing. I know it is pretty simplistic, but honestly I think there is a mentality that KO's are MUCH worse then a ground out. Which is just wrong and pretty dumb

I actually think with Hossa under contract and coming back, the Hawks may be smarter to push to get Keith done long term and let Kane walk.

I saw that Harbaugh is getting an extension at Stanford. I remember him being eliminated early in the coach search at Michigan. Was that because UM wanted a bigger name or did Harbaugh take himself out early?

I also think most ND haters (myself included) would agree that they got completely screwed by that "fumble" call last night. I am not saying the call wasnt bad. I just am basically saying there are plenty of ND haters who would say that ND is just getting what they deserved. Personally, I just think that complaining about officiating by everyone is getting stale. I really dont think anyone is getting screwed on purpose or do I think there is some agenda to help certain teams make the BCS. Officials are humans that make mistakes, just like the players make mistakes. If someone was to watch the games objectively I am sure they will find places where officiating mistakes have helped their teams also. Most people dont watch objectively(especially a team like ND) Which is why ND haters are quick to point out when officiating has helped ND win, while ND fans point out how officiating has screwed them.

I think most long time ND haters would find it ironic that ND fans are complaining about officiating.
